INTRODUCTIONS
Introductions. There are many types of introductions: babies are introduced to life, elders are introduced to death, strangers are introduced to each other, couples are introduced to love... Ming, however, was being introduced to Chemistry. Out of all the things to be dreaded and loathed in life, science was the worst. Like Romeo and Juliet, Ming and science just had too much against them. Misunderstandings, confusions, grudges, etc. etc. The list is quite long. So asking how Ming was faring in Chemistry is equivalent to asking how a sailboat is faring on storm-ridden seas. Terribly. Abysmally. She just plain out-and-out sucked. Even Asian Studies and Classical Western Literature couldn't cheer her up. NYC had little to no affect on her now--which meant things were seriously wrong. Contemplating polyatomic ions while riding the subway down to Chinatown just wasn't healthy behavior. It was during one of her long tedious lectures that she noticed something quite bizarre. A buzzing noise seemed to fill the room every five minutes. Like Morse Code in a way, but more irksome. For a moment or two, Ming thought it was just the sound of boredom. ...that neverending beep that plagues those who're zoning out or thoroughly engrossed in trying to zone out. So she willed herself to ignore it, something that became progressively harder as the minutes ticked by. The buzzing was definitely growing in volume and it couldn't possibly in her head. Though, oddly enough, no one else seemed to hear it but her. Ming's eyes strayed from the board and stared out the window. There was nothing much to see on the third floor of a building in a classroom facing away from Washington Square. The hustle and bustle of the city could just barely be heard above the murmur of the professor...and that loud incessant buzz. Knowing she'd regret it later, Ming shut her books, stuffed them in her bag, and snuck out of the lecture room (which was easy enough, seated near the back door and being one of 100 faces). Later she'd be staring blankly at a list of chemical equations wishing she had paid attention in class but for now, curiosity took priority. * * * * Upon exiting the building, Ming spotted a much welcomed surprise. The familiar face came out of the shadows to greet her. (to be cont... I've reached a dead end it seems...) |
