One hundred Lemon Trees

Like a lot of people, I’ve wanted to get to know some of my original characters a bit better but mostly to kick-start my creativity. I’ve put the list together by myself so if there are any double words that’s all on me. If anyone finds anything: tell me and you get to pick the replacement word.

Don’t hesitate to comment, I like responses and constructive criticism.

These drabbles will centre around a medieval fantasy town because that way I can have several characters interacting at once. They will all also be 100 words.

I hope that you’ll have fun reading them!

The drabbles I write will be at random. I'm using a random number generator to tell me which theme I'll be using.

#017. Cat

The two crouched in silence, staring under the couch with a pair of yellow eyes stared right back.

“So what are we doing?” Christian finally asked.

Next to him, Briannah shifted to get comfortable. “We need to catch the demon.”

“Why?”

For some reason, the young man didn’t feel like reaching under the couch to grab the beast that he knew to be hiding there.

“It tore my favourite blouse.”

She dove forward and immediately, a white, fluffy cat came bursting out and ran to the other side of the room. No one would take this feline without a fight.

# 044. Forbidden

Silence. A pair of two shadows sneaking away from the village. They were giddy with excitement and nervous because they knew they were doing something forbidden.

Children weren’t allowed out of bed after hours and certainly weren’t supposed to creep into the forest.

“Sssh,” David warned his partner in crime and twin brother Jonathan when he threatened to make a noise.

They couldn’t get caught!

They were seven and on a mission.

Not even a minute later they came running back, screaming the entire village awake. “Monsters!” they yelled in fear.

In the forest, a pixie giggled: that was fun!

#060. Start

Bright sun light poured in through the window, brushing over Briannah’s eyes as if to tell her to wake up. She groaned and tried to bury deeper into her blankets and pillows. Last night had been late and there had been wine. An indulgence she rarely allowed herself.

She was a healer and healers were supposed to be responsible at all times.

“I know you’re awake,” a voice rumbled, sounding amused, not far from her and in the bed too.

She smiled: even healers were allowed to drink a little on their wedding day. The start of their life together.

# 090. Kiss

It was hot and oppressive outside, the first real heat wave of the year and already Briannah found herself hoping that it would be the last.

At least it was evening now and people had left the fields and stores to go to their own homes.

With a sigh, she sank down on one of the chairs.

“Rough day?” her husband of three months asked, walking to the chair. He knelt and looked into her eyes with dancing brown eyes.

“The cure is a kiss,” he told her with a smile and leaned closer to her, their lips gently touching.
