I find myself very attracted to books about alternate universes. This can be anything from Alice in wonderland to Clive barkers Abarat series. The last one I read was Interworld by Neil Gaiman (not one of my favorites).
Anyone else like alternate world books and if you do, which ones?

I dunno, I like alternate history and such but when it gets into alternate universes I start to lose interest.
I just read most of the latest of the 1632 series (the short stories) on Sunday. Pretty much I think it has all the life sucked out of it so far, the stories were very simple. ._. I still need to read the early ones, but I'm library reading lately, lol, so I just pick up what they have.

I really like alternate history and alternate history too, especially the steam punk genre of alternate history.
I like China Meiville, he wrote un lun dun and perdido street station (a few others I haven't read too.) His books are really complete and thoroughly bizzare but he writes so well that you can easily visualize everthing.

I do like althernate history and alternate universe. I like the alternate universes where magic, or magical creatures are now commonplace and that affects all of society.
I like 1632 as well, but after the first book I kind of lose interest. I don't like the war books so much as the interactions between diffrent cultures.

I like it, when they go somewhere, and then they come out, and no time has passed at all but they think they've been where ever they went for ages.

I actually read the Scar before Perdido Street Station but they're in the same world only, not a sequel. I relly need to read Un Lun Dun, we got it out from the library.
Diana Wynne Jones Books are all really good. Also Piers Anthony and Anne McCaffrey. Charles DeLint, if no one's mentioned him, is really cool. He does a lot of Urban fairytales. If I think of anything else I will mention it. As you can tell, I really like these kind of stories, so I will be prowling this thread.

I've only read one Charles de lint, from a whisper to a scream, I didn't really like that book. What's your favorite de lint book? A lot of people recommend him, so maybe I just read the one.

I like alternate universe books sometimes, but it generally depends on the plot itself and how the book is actually pulled off. Personally, I liked that Gaiman book. I also loved If I Pay Thee Not In Gold, which was a book by Piers Anthony and. . .someone else. I think Anne McCaffery, but maybe not.
I don't know if The Host counts, but I liked that too.
Other than those, though, I can't really remember any others that I've read and liked, or at least, I'm not remembering them as Alternate Universe. . .
Oh, wait.
There is one more.
Warriors of Alavna, I think I was called.
About two high school students being summoned through a veil into a world of magic and warriors and stuff.
Really neat, but I never got around to seeing if there were any sequels.

Anne McCaffrey never wrote anything deliberately set in an alternate universe. She just wrote sci-fi with a bit of fantasy thrown in, in the case of her Pern series.

fairywaif both on views and recommendations (meiville and Dianna wynne jones) lol
Alternate worlds are great: the alternate histories are fantastic to see- just what the imagination can think up ^_^
another series that I think was really good were the Beddor series: The Looking Glass Wars

Have any of you read The Last Universe by William Sleator? In the book you learn that Gary is terminally ill and his sister Susan is forced to look after him by her parents. Gary starts acting strange however and when the two go to the pond on their property, they find a lotus that's not supposed to be there. Eventually, Gary finds this maze that heals him a little bit when he enters. You have to read the book yourself to find out more, but it really deals with Quantum Physics. Another book by him is Marco's Millions. In it a boy who likes to travel, Marco, finds a portal to millions of different worlds.
