I never read the ending first I did it once and I hated myself for it because It just ruined it for me, not that it was a bad book I was just peeved that they killed my favorite character....

taytay20903040 01-16-2010 11:36 PM

I read the back of the book for the story line and then if I like i will read the first couple of pages and then the very last page just to see if I'm going to like the end of the book because I don't like book that have bad endings. It makes me kinda hate the author.

AkihitoKage 01-17-2010 02:48 PM

If I'm thinking of buying a book in the store I'll read the last page and if I'm really curious as to how it gets to that point then I'll buy/borrow it. But I don't do it as much as I used to because as I've gotten older I've found it's spoiled things XD

Reading the ending first really gets rid of most of the suspense that makes up the entirety of the story... Which is why I hate it to high heaven when I'm reading a book and someone else who's already read it says something like, "Oh hey, I've read that! Have you gotten to the part when -insert event- happens!?" UGH! Its enough to make me want to punch someone in the face! But that's alright cause most of the books I read, my peers wouldn't touch, so I really don't have to worry about that... unless its manga... then I can expect a friend to spoil the ending for me. -_-
But yeah, back on subject, seeing the ending first is a story ruin. It kills everything good about it. Tells you who the real main characters are, kills suspense, gives away characters that don't show up right in the beginning, etc. etc. Spoilers suck, end of story. Beginning to end is the only way I'd ever read any book, article, comic, or watch a series of movies or television shows... because its the way it was MEANT to be seen.

ember2phoenix 01-21-2010 03:15 PM

I'm actually shocked that so many people say the read the ending before the end! I had no idea that people did this, lol, really?! That's crazy to me. I would never do that. Sometimes , I stay up all night reading to get to the end because I can't go to bed without knowing what's going to happen. I can't imagine missing out on that feeling of the tension building, you know... will he?... won't he?... Is she?... can they?... and omg, he's dead!.

Taviren 01-21-2010 09:00 PM

Nevah! I like not knowing what's going to happen at the end when reading a book for the first time. I'll save knowing the ending for when I re-read it. =)

Krusadin 01-23-2010 05:00 AM

Never...*shudders* even the thought of it horrifies me. I hate spoilers of any kind.

Rock Fan Chick 01-25-2010 08:27 PM

I'd NEVER do that! It would ruin the whole story for me....but if I get halfway through it and don't like it then I just put it down.

kleptomaniac 01-26-2010 06:18 PM

No, not usually... unless I feel like a character's going to die, then I feel compelled to spoil it so i don't turn into a blubbery mess. :P I get far too emotionally involved in books and TV shows when I'm watching them, k.

sunshinestaralight 01-28-2010 10:21 AM

Sometimes I read the ending of a book before I read the rest of it. But only if I have been taking too long to finish it and I can't stand not knowing the ending anymore. Usually I read it from beginning to end though sometimes if the book is awesome it is very tempting to skip to the end to see how it ends. If the book is awesome I enjoy reading the whole thing so I don't mind reading it from beginning to the ending without skipping through to the ending. A lot of times if I skip to the ending it is usually a book that I am not enjoying so much that I want to get to the end and avoid torturing myself by forcing myself to read the entire thing. LOL! I just noticed that I skip reading the entire books and skip right to the ending only if the book isn't as good as I thought it would be when I first started reading it.

IanLaRue 01-30-2010 03:34 AM

Aw man, I could never ever do that. It spoils the whole plot. I like to be surprised. If you read the last part, it's like someone sitting there watching a movie with you and all of a sudden they go "He's going to die". I read the first couple of chapters, and if I can't seem to get into it, then I put it down.

Linnea 02-01-2010 03:39 PM

i don't usually start out thinking about reading the end but when (and if) i get really into the book, it's then i get thinking about the end and if it's a good, happy ending or a crappy one... i will read the book regardless of the ending, but i am a sucker for a happy ending and sometimes i just want to know so i can calm my anxiety

Fallacious 02-01-2010 03:47 PM

Not at all. I hardly even read the back covers because they give too much away.

What I do is pick out about three or four books and read page 31. (Page 31 is the page that the library marks with their magnetic codes which is how I picked that number, if you're wondering) If the style is something I like I'll take the book and read it.

I also like to read the very first sentence of books to determine which to read first.

MayLily 02-01-2010 08:44 PM

How could you?! I always read from the start and to the end. Occasionally I'll check how many pages I have left, but that's it. Reading the end it like cheating to me. I like to see if the ending is predictable or takes me completely by surprise. It's fun guessing what happens. Isn't that the whole point of reading?

KarinKusari 02-02-2010 04:34 AM

IT IS A MADE-UP STORY. VERY STRANGE. ALL ONE NEED DO IS TURN TO THE LAST PAGE AND THE ANSWER IS THERE. WHAT, THEREFORE, IS THE POINT OF DELIBERATELY NOT KNOWING?
~DEATH, Thud!, Terry Pratchett

The suspense is half the fun! Besides, unless you've got a really good author, you know the hero's not gonna die and good/protagonist/anti-hero is going to win. Not to mention, it's cheating.

Karwyn Rayne 02-02-2010 10:18 PM

I've been tempted in the past with books i'm worried are going to end sadly. Most times though I am able to fight the temptation. I've found knowing the end right away makes me care so much less about the rest of the book, be it a good or bad ending.

kymest 02-06-2010 02:44 AM

i always read the first and last paragraph of a book for no reason

I BLAME TWILIGHT FOR MAKING VAMPIRES SPARKLE!!!
HOW OFFENSIVE TO DRACULA!!!

Beccaii 02-12-2010 01:32 AM

No I never start at the end cause them the whole ending is ruined for me and I will most likely will never start or finish it. I had a teacher that use to make us read the end and each time I was like froget it why bother now that i know what happened.

toxicsugar 02-12-2010 03:15 AM

I've only been guilty of this ONCE and it was for the last Harry Potter book. I was a quarter of a way through the thing before I couldn't help peeking at the ending... I wish I hadn't. Crushed my spirits before I even finished the book...

--Lia-- 02-12-2010 08:25 AM

When I choose books,I always read some pages of the beginnig and then,I read 2/3 of the ending to decide.

tenderwhispers 02-13-2010 04:56 AM

no, i find it takes the fun out of getting to the end if you already know what going to happen. but i do count the pages in each chapter before i read them lol

Larxene 02-13-2010 05:07 AM

Sometimes I peak at the ending but it doesn't make it boring for me to read the rest of the story. Sure you may know the ending ahead of time, but what about the rest of the detail that led up to the ending? You need to know that too. It's just as important.

Mistress Lunar 02-15-2010 11:06 PM

All of the time. It's a bad idea when it is a mystry novel.

xhappy kitty 02-16-2010 08:49 AM

Well, I've done it a few times. But, does anyone read the middle of a book to see if it's good, so it's in an action scene or something and so you don't know what's happening and you don't ruin a good ending?

mintdiesel 02-16-2010 03:00 PM

Never! It spoils the book if not the ending too. I always go by the first couple paragraphs and the summary on the back. I don't mind a bittersweet or not so great ending, but as long the story was compelling and kept me hooked, it's a good read.
