this year I'm entering my Senior year. generally, I love the summer reading books, but I've been getting mixed messages about Siddhartha.
so my question to you is:
have you ever read it?
if so, do you recommend it?
also, are there any other books similar that you would recommend?
discuss.

I read it senior year of high school for my AP English class. It wasn't too long so if you read at a good pave, it shouldn't be too bad. I vaguely remember enjoying it though.

i read it my sophomore year, in my least favorite class with my most favorite teacher.
I hated the book but he made it interesting.
And there's a sex scene.
It's all about finding yourself.
And being one with you and your religion.
I'm still pretty sure I hated the book.

I really liked Siddhartha. :D My boyfriend made me read it because it's one of his favorite books. :) It's really more philosophical/religious than anything, but it makes for a really good story, despite historical undertones. I didn't read it as fiction though, so perhaps that makes a difference. It's also rather short, so it's a quick and painless read.

It's a pretty good book if you're ok with some philosophy. I've read it three times and loved it every time, and I'm sure I'll love it the fourth time around too.

I rather liked it-I at least thought it was interesting. You (a general you, not anyone in specific) may not like it, but I'd still recommend it.

I read it in my sophmore lit class in High school. It was fairly decent, and the teacher was my favorite so that made it easier. I honestly don't remember much about it, though. I do recomend it, and it's one of the books that you'll probably hear people talking about later, and you can join in the conversation.
Another book that I'd recomend... Well, Epic of Gilgamesh is similar, and I would recomend it since it's a good book to read for philosophical discussions, but I don't think I'd recomend it for pleasure reading. It's language is much harder to decipher than Siddartha.

i love that book- I find philosophies, psychology, and religion fascinating.
Something else that is philosophy minded but strays away from religion more is a book called Sophie's World (i'm afraid I don't remember the author and I lent my copy out).
If you like learning more with the culture of the novel then reading Midnight's Children is amazing (by Salaman Rushdie). Although admittedly a very hard novel to read through at times- I swear it feels never ending, no matter how interesting the story lol

This is one of my favorite books. :)
That being said, much of what I liked about it, I wouldn't have understood on my own--I really needed those class discussions. It's really neat if you look at the big picture though. Everything in the novel goes full circle, from beginning to end. I also loved all the parts with Siddhartha's friend... don't want to spoil anything for you, so I won't say anything more. :)
And like others have pointed out, the books is short. So if you're one of the people that doesn't like it, at least things will move quickly. Xb

My school had us read it in our tenth grade year. It was pretty good, but I think I was the only one that liked it.
