This is a book that I've almost completed and it has quickly become one of my favorite books. It's called The Black Company and it's by Glen Cook. It actually consists of three cooks in one all based on the writing of the Company's annalist Croaker. No on in the book really has a name, they are all nick names for example; Raven, The Captain, One-Eye, Goblin, Kingpin, Silent, and so on.
Well, the Black company is actually a mercenary group that is bound to whoever has their contract until they either die, or are killed. Normally the group is loyal to the person they work for and will not, themselves, complete the killing. Circumstances, however, lead them to work for a great Evil of the world, though they had not realized it at the time. There is a group of people called The Ten Who Were Taken or The Taken for short and one of them employees the group. They have insane missions to root out the Rebel forces against The Takens leader The Lady, and also have hints about her husband, The Dominator who is a greater evil still the The Lady and The Taken.
So, I'm almost done with it and things are taking a far more interesting twist then I had expected. I can't wait to finish and I'll need to find all the other books dealing with the Black Company by this author because he is fantastic. It's obvious he was a prior serviceman when you read the conversations between characters within The Black Company.
