I don't remember. Did Howl actually freak out and say "I don't want to live if I can't be beautiful" thing? Something along those lines, right?

in the movie he said something along the lines of:
"whats the point of living if you cant be beautiful?" as for the book i cant remember the exact lines but it was close

I LOVE howl's moving castle.... i love both the book and the movie for different reasons.

If you liked that one you should read the other two.. Castle in the air(( nothing like castle in the sky)) and house of many ways... it's not about Howl but he's in it...

I don't really like the second book....only interesting things in it were Howl and Sophie who reappeared. The magical carpet was fun too <3

I read he book a long time ago, and loved it, its been my favorite since then. XD Howl's character in the movie is very charming but in the book I like him a bit better, he's more silly and child-like, in the movie I just sort of felt like he was smiling over nothing, and he didn't have as many child-like moments. :/

As for Sophie, in the book I could REALLY relate to her, in the movie she acted stubborn a couple times but most of the time I felt she wasn't acting like herself. But still she was okay in the moive.

As for Markel, he was too child-like in the movie ( like how in the book it said he was polite, but in the movie he was being mean and blunt to Sophie. )

I was also pretty disapointed that they dropped the sister's stories, they never said anything about Martha, and Lettie was barely in the movie.

As for the witch, in the book she was very pretty and young looking, I was a bit shocked at seeing her fat in the movie, I sort of imaged her being more like "Beauty IS the beast." if you know what I mean. XD

Overall the movie was good but I felt like it was alot different from the book. Still the movie is one of my favorites too. The movie just has a nice feel and theme to it, being anti-war and Howl not caring at the end if he is beautiful or not. I think thats one of the things that the book and the movie still kept, where in the end the main theme is that Howl finally stopped worry about his beauty and started worrying about those around him.

Me too! The sidestory of the sisters was very interesting, too bad it wasn't in the movie! The sisters lived the life Sophie thought she never could, and the sisters were really cute and interesting.

And when you think that the witch loved everything that's beatiful well...you'd think she'd so anything to be pretty herself, like she was in the book xD

A couple years ago my friend had read it (before the movie came out) and she gave it to me to read and we both obsessed about it for weeks. We were dissapointed in the movie because of this, but otherwise really enjoyed Howl's World.

My favorite part was when he was drinking (I think) and trips up the stairs and misses the door to his room and such. In fact thinking about it I might read this book again.

I love both the movie and the book. The thing is they are very very different. I love the book so much. It's so witty and funny. The characters are very endearing and really well fleshed out. I recommend the book to anyone who loves outrageous humor and a good fantasy story.

I didn't even know there was a book! Wow, something I'm going to enjoy looking for. =]
I adored the movie, and I almost always like the book a whole lot better than the movie.

Sophie is much more depressing in the book though.
Howls a bigger idiot, drunk, and a skirt chaser.
And the evil baddie is quite different. In fact the entire story was different.

Truthfully though, i love the movie, almost as much as the book. Simply genius, ghibli and Miyazaki.

i don't usually like movies if i love the book, but i really love the movie and really love the book... i've read the book about seven times and i own the movie...

the only thing i didn't like about the movie was how the witch of the waste was depicted... i think she should have been more like the book version in that she should have stayed evil throughout... although, having howl up against a much bigger adversary; the whole kingdom, other sorcerers, and ultimately the king, was a neat approach to who is the real bad guy...

I loved the book so much better than the movie. The book made the movie make sense. The movie left out so much stuff that half of it made no sense at all.

the book and movie are exceedingly different... I love them both a lot.. I saw the movie first.. borrowed the book from a friend... took me slightly les then seven hours to read it... I like the bbook more then the movie... though the movie is the only part i can share with my nephew.. he watched the whole thing.. only 2 years old... i don't think i could get him to sit still loong enough for me to read even just a few pages of a book with no pictures....

I already told them about the greatness that was Connor falling asleep on me. His two year old self could not handle the greatness that is Howl's Moving Castle.

I'm reading the sequel to Howl's Moving Castle right now, called Castle in the Air. I love Diana Wynne Jones. Her style is very British. As much as I love the book, I also really love the movie. It is pretty different, as is expected when interpretation comes in/ movie magic, but it's still amazing fun times.

If you guys like Howl's Moving Castle, check out the Tales of Christomanci, also by Wynne Jones. These are harder to find than HMC...and I am pretty sure they might be out of print. I found mine at a huge book sale I go to every year. I'm sure they are floating about on half.com or something.

Oh, gotta check those out! :) Thought I'm not really fan of how Wynne writes..thought that was only the problem with the second book, I liked the first of Howl books..

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite books, I must have read it over 20 times in the last year. I could pick it up, flip it open and start reading and know exactly what is going on. There is always some little thing I find that I missed before. Things like Sophie finds a paste in the bathroom that says "For Decay" (it's toothpaste!) and how Howl writes with a pen that never runs out of ink (it's a ballpoint pen :D).

The movie is very, very, VERY loosely based on the book, so keep that in mind if you haven't read the book. I like it but I kind of hold it as a separate story all together, since it's kind of like Mizaki flipped through the first couple of chapters and said "Yup I see where this is going." and didn't read the rest.

I love Dianna Wynne Jones' other books as well, especially "The Dark Lord of Derkholm." Which is basically about a fantasy world (with wizards, dragons, magic, etc.) being used as a tourist location for English vacationers against the will of the people who live in the world. The dark lord is actually a farmer, who had his name drawn to play the dark lord that year.

Woo long post!

Saw the movie first and loved it, then again its hard not to love things by Miyazaki. However, I heard that the movie was different from the book. Of course I went out and bought the book, and I loved that as well. I think Jones is a fabulous writer and it was very hard to put the book down. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy.
