So, I tried this on Gaia, and it didn't last too long, I'm hoping it'll last longer on here.
Vampire books are the new trend so why not start a discussion on which one you think is better, and why. Also, why not leave an author name and a short summary for anyone looking for new books. :)
(Yes, I saw that other vampire books thread, but that was recommendations for someone and this is a disscussion, so I thought it deserved it's own thread.)

Well I got into Twilight off of a friends recommendation and I was intrigued. I didn't actually begin LIKING Twilight until about half-way through the book. After I was hooked, boy was I hooked. My Favorite book from the series is Breaking Dawn just cause Rennesmee is just too adorable for words. After that would come Eclipse then New Moon and Twilight. Lol wow I just realized I like them in reverse order!
As for the House of Night series I just LOVE IT. I have to say i even like The House of Night even better than I like Twilight. The House of Night books to me are just more realistic plot-wise ya know? I mean the teenagers in the books talk and act like teenagers do. It's just all so lol real. I just love the series
As for the third option...well I've never read it so I won't say anything about it :)
There is another series that I read five years ago. I forgot what the series was called and I only read two of the book which were called Demon in my View and Shattered Mirror. I think the series was called In the Forest of the Night of something o.0 or maybe that was one of the other books. Anyways the series hooked me long before Twilight or the House of Night and it was just amazing!

The series you're talking about is actually called "The Den of Shadows", but most fans don't ever actually call it that, for some reason. (I think a lot of people don't know the real name.) They're written by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, and the others in the series are "In the Forests of the Night", "Midnight Predator", and "Persistence of Memory." (Although PoM may not actually be considered part of the same series; I'm not sure. It's by the same author and it's also about vampires, though.)

Ah, thanks for clearing that up! I knew Amelia Atwater-Rhodes was the author I just didn't know what the series as a whole was called :)

Wow, I've never heard of that third series you mentioned, I might have to check it out. As for my favorite, I adore HoN. It's harry potter meets vampires and it got me totally hooked. :D It's just so real, and she has real problems, and I the fact it has an openly gay relationship that not a total sub plot mention that no one remebers is awesome to me. I really can't wait for the next one, since Hunted kind of disappointed me. :/

you really should check it out. It has LOTS of action and the Vampires in the books are just amazing and there is also a little witchcraft thrown in there is I remember correctly :)
I totally agree with you with the realness of the series, that part of what drew me in. I have not read all of the books out, as I only just got done with Chosen and I am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to go get Untamed lol! :) I'm glad as well that there is an openly gay relationship. That part just adds to the realness of the series as a whole.

In my opinion the best vampire series is The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.
As to why I enjoy her series the reason is simple. They keep me entertained they are not childish.
Currently I'm working on a book called Bloodlist by P.N.Elrod. Of the series called The Vampire Files.
It's a vampire story which is based around the depression. The hero of the book has been turned into a vampire by of course previously being bitten and having his blood drank by said vampire. But this one has a twist. You don't always become a vampire by it and you have to die first. And yet another twist! He has amnesia of the whole time around his death. So he sets off to find out how he died!
Anyway if you end up reading any of those I hope you enjoy them.

Haha, well... There's a big difference between what's "best" and what's my favorite. I'm a big fan of Twilight, but you will never hear me say that it is a "good book." It's really fun and entertaining, and I am a sucker for happy endings, but there's just so much wrong with it.
I just started reading House of Night maybe a week ago, and I haven't been able to get my hands on The Betrayal yet, but I really like it judging by the first book. I kind of have a weakness for overpowered main characters (Bella just barely fitting into this category before crossing over to Empress Queen Ruler of all Mary Sues).
I've been meaning to read all of Anne Rice's books for a long time now; I started Interview with the Vampire a while back, but got too caught up in other things to finish it, unfortunately. :/ I'm also ashamed to say that I've never read the original Dracula, but that's something else I'd like to fix in the near future.
My own favorites? The original Vampire Hunter D novels are great. I also love Trinity Blood, but honestly prefer the anime to the novels; the writing style kind of annoys me... For all I know though, it's a side effect of translation from Japanese.
What else, what else...? Huh, it seems I'm blanking here. I'll have to check out some of the books everyone else has mentioned, though!

For me the best Vampire stories are by Anne Rice. Her vampire chronicles got me started and they still hold me captivated.

I have read Twilight and I am into The House of Night seiries right now. Vampire books are the most current 'fad' and I'm sorry to say that alone is killing vampires for me. Vampire stories are becomine cliche, overused, done to death, whatever term you want to use for it. Vampires are going to become old and worn out. Thankfully, when that happens, vampire stories will at last be given a break. I haven't actually seen anything original for vampires in a handful of years no. Twilight was what sparked this sudden growth the most I believe and it is Twilight that has caused the murder of Vampiric tales. Werewolf stories are beginning to follow. Vampires are classic creatures for writing but now they are getting boring. There are only so many variations, spins and twists that can be put on them. The only original thing I've seen in years is something one of my friends is writing. Otherwise, despite how much I love Vampires, I pray that they are left to rest in peace for a while so they can come back into style with a vengance. Right now, I simply feel pity for the Vampire characters that now exsist.

I have read Twilight and have started the other two series.
Twilight was a good read but not a good series. It started to get to the point where it seemed like Meyers was putting random words on a piece of paper and creating a plot. I didn't like the sparkly vampire idea either.
I can't say much about the other series as I started them a while ago and have not continued them since. I get impatient when I am waiting for the next book. So I start a different book and wind up forgetting about it.
Another series I have only read the first book of is The Morganville Vampires. The first book is Glass Houses. So far it's rather good.

In my opinion, Anne Rice owns when it comes to Vampire Tales. Well her and Bram Stoker.
These are stories about complex characters and, to me, show realistically what a vampire would probably be like.
Anne Rice was pretty much the first when it came to writing vampires as characters capable of sympathy and love. I find most of these new stories to be very well high school when it comes to this topic. Vampires, logically speaking, aren't even remotely good companions for humans (humans are a FOOD SOURCE!) In Anne Rice's books, if a vampire loves a human, the human usually ends up a vampire. Which makes sense, as a vampire couldn't really love a human for very long or the same way it could love another vampire - as an equal.
Bram Stoker writes vampires as evil (which is reflective of the attitudes towards vampires during his time frame), and essentially Bram's right. A vampire is going to be the bad guy to us - vampires eat us.
I did read a book when I was younger that had some very good ideas about what an actual vampire would be like as far as explaining how they eat, their aging process, etc. (and I'm sorry to those who subscribe to the that theory of vampires being able to survive off of animal blood but seeing as how a regular human could not use animal blood during a transfusion, how could someone who was a human get what they would need nutritionally from it?)
I'm fairly certain that even a vampire could have sex, or would have sex with a human, he/she would probably be looked at by other vampires the same way humans look at other humans who have sex with sheep.
Okay, rant over ::picks up soap box and scurries away::

I find the most entertaining series to be Darren Shan's "The Saga of Darren Shan". Boy, that sounds redundant. I think it the US it's just called "Cirque du Freak".
Darren, a young boy, steals a poisonous spider from a man who performs in a freak show. His friend gets infected by the spider, but Darren is able to get a vaccine for him from Mr. Crepsley, the spider's owner. The cost? Darren has to fake his death in order to leave his current life behind and join Mr. Crepsley as a creature of the night.
He eventually gets wrapped up in a war between the vampires, who drink just a bit of blood from their victims, and the vampaneze, who drain all the blood.
It's a twelve book series split into four trilogies. The movie comes out October 23. ;]

The Vampire Chronicles is probably the best Vampire book i have ever read. oh and i wouldn't consider the Twilight series to be a Vampire book. the "vampires" in Twilight are more like blood obsessed pixies... its truly sad what Twilight has done to the Vampire genre

It seems Twilight is what started a lot of people into the vampire fandom. I may get lynched for it, but I have always believe, out of all the vampire books I have read within my short lifespan that it's probably the very last book that should be even considered vampires. I mean, almost every vampire legend is butchered with it, no real research went into it, and it reads on a first grade level. Still, I do recognize that it is what began a lot of people into this line of reading.
For myself, the first vampire novel I ever read was Cirque Du Freak, which is really what got me into reading a ton in the first place. So I hold a lot of admiration in it. Though, I must admit, I would not recommend it to an experienced reader but someone just starting out, as the sentence structures are basic and the fashion it is written isn't the most amazing in the world. But for a quick read to someone just starting to get into the genre, it's a must.
One of my most adored vampire novelists, who has a class and polish to her writing, seeming to paint pictures in a fashion rarely found in novels today, is Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. Her first novel was In the Forest of the Night and it was one she published at 16, I believe. After that her style only became better. Demon in My View was definitely one of her best.
Of course, it was sometime in here that I began to read any and everything vampire. I learned all the lore and am still fascinated by them.
During this time, I became hooked on the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, series. The first novels of which were amazing, but she has started to become a bit iffy in her style. It's still a great read for when I've nothing better to do, though.
Now, my favorite author, who took vampires and kinda really ran with the idea, melting in the Greek Gods and so many legends, is Sherylon Kenyon, and her Dark-Hunter series. It's a must read for vampire lovers who enjoy a good romance novel as well. All her stories have good plot, very distinct characters, and some nice humor mixed in. While each book has it's own plot, they all build on a greater plot in the background. Possibly my favorite series in this genre.
