The Official Mythology Thread

See, I had no idea if this was supposed to be here or in General Discussion, but I figured since mythology is usually read, then, well, it probably should be here. Anyway, onto the real topic. So we all know about some form of mythology, whether it's Greek, Egyptian, Norse, or Celtic. So many cultures have their own stories about how the world was created, their own pantheon of gods, and dramatic stories about revenge that ends in tragedy. We all know about the different gods out there, like Anubis, Zeus, or Loki. ~ Do you have a favorite myth? ~ Favorite god or goddess? Least favorite? ~ How did you get introduced to mythology? Was it school, or idle browsing in a library? ~ Any books that are influenced or inspired by mythology. |
I love greek mythology!
Favorite greek goddess of all time: Artemis ...introduced? I'm not sure. I guess i learned some stories from my friends and then i kept reading about them :D they're good literature |

Uhm, I'm actually hoping to get into Uni for Classics, which is the study of greek and roman mythology (: I think I was introduced to it, in some of the books I read in the library one time, I recently just bought a Dictionary of myths, which took over 30 years to create, it is truly amazing. (: |
Apparently I'm weird: I like viking mythology. :offtopic: Egyptian is a close second, tough. I like the gods and goddesses better with Egyptian, but the creatures and stories better with viking. Horus has to be my favorite god, and the story of Nidhogg is my favorite (not really a story, but it's interesting).
I... can't really remember how I was "introduced" to it... I guess somewhere along the line, I just came to love it. ^^ |
I absolutely love myths! I don't really have favourite gods or goddesses, I enjoy reading about them all!
I think my favourite type of mythology is greek but I also love viking myths. I started reading myths after we had to research about Perseus and Andromeda in school. I also enjoy books that aren't centered on the myth but include them so you learn small pieces. |
I love the myth of Isis. It's so good. Umm not really, or rather I have one for each culture. Like Diana/Artemis, Isis, Bast. I like all the women. I don't really have a least favorite, except maybe Loki and Zeus. They are annoying. I want to egypt when I was 10 so that got me into egyptian mythology and I've always been into greek/roman mythology. Stargate got me into Norse mythology actually. I love books about fairies etc and things with a modern twist.

I learned Pandora, Artemis, and Aphrodite from my friends...and then something about this dude that cut off madusa's head...but i kinda forgot about that O_o

Great idea for a thread!
I've loved Mythology since I learned how to read. It's one of the few "phases" that has stuck with me all my life. I love the comparison between a society's culture, religion, and the mythology that develops from it. Because most major civilizations develop the same sorts of stories: The creation, the "Pandora's Box," the great flood, etc. Yet depending upon which characteristics are valued within a culture, you can see how the tale changes to adapt. The types of mythology that I've probably studied the most are Greek/Roman (like everyone else :lol:), Norse, and Christian narratives (not just Biblical tales, but things like the lives of saints as well). All are fun in their own way. |
to be honest.. i was introduced to egyptian artifacts in elementary and had an obsession with it since then. in high school i was introduced to greek mythology and loved it. my boyfriend of 8 years introduced me to norse mythology and i will admit it is interesting. i have been reading up on greek and egyptian mythology moreso than japanese or norse.
i really don't know if i have a favorite god/goddess or myth to be honest. BUT i do have the Illiad by homer that i should finish reading. I also like the amaterasu myth. |
I'm so glad this thread was started! I adore Greek mythology! My grandma introduced it to me when i was really young. She bought me the Daluerie's book of Greek myths ( i think that's how you spell it!) After I read it I was totally hooked! I think my all time favorite Goddess is Athena. My Favorite God would have to be Hermes since hes so mischievous and since hes the patron god of tricksters and such which I always found to be interesting. My Favorite story of all time has to be between Persephone and Hades and then the story of Medusa. I haven't ever really read any of the Egyptian or Norse Mythology. Any good suggestions on where to start?

I would say go to the library and see if they have anything there. I did have this book of myths (not just Greek, but Norse, Egyptian, Japanese, Celtic, etc), but it's gone now. I wish I still had it. :( |

Can't help you on Egyptian, though. The only book I've ever read that involved Egyptian myths was Tim Power's The Anubis Gates, but that's a novel. |

Thanks! I'd suggest Tvtropes (they do have a few pages dedicated to mythology), but they're not as detailed as Wikipedia, and pretty much serve as a general guide.
