Do you ever lose yourself in a book? As in, you forget that you're turning pages, and every now and then suddenly jerk out of it and notice that it's ink on the page, not something in your head?

Do you create "voices" for characters? In dialogue, do you "hear" what they're saying?

Do you envision described scenery and such? When a character's face is described in detail, does it pop into your head? If a house is described, does it always look like a house you know?

For me, all the answers to these are a definite "yes!", but I'm curious about all you lovely bibliophiles in the Books forum! How involved do you get when reading? Or is it always something external?

Usually I can only get that in depth with a really good/descriptive book. If the writer's way of portrayal is shallow, or the characters flimsy, it's becomes easy to see the ink on the page instead of the imagery in my head. ^^;

My reading is usually just like you described yours! It is odd I don't know many people who do that!

I agree. With a good book, and well, most books I read I tend to forget I'm sat their reading and then every so often look up or stop and realise. With not very good books I don't get lost in them, its easy to tell that I'm reading the book and I don't get deep into it.

If it's good i tend to get lost in it. I hear the naration much like a voiceover in a movie. If it's ok i tend to hear it like someone else is reading it or telling a story and I see it a little.

If you can vividly imagine everything you are reading, then you either have a great imagination, or whatever book you're reading is EXTREMELY good.
At least, that's what I've always thought.

YES I always lose myself! I have the feeling that my books are movies that I wanna watch and then I realize that, noo, it never came out in a movie (well...the ones that didn't anyway) and I know the guys in my romance novels always have voices for some reason! Like...one of them has an Orlando Bloom voice because his character's model picture looks like Orlando Bloom in POTC, and this other guy has a somewhat nasal-snobby voice but not really. Other guys have rough voices. And then the girls...I envision some of their characters looking like whatever I think they look like. Like, this one demon-slayer chick is a redhead with a bob cut and she wears leather.

Even if the characters have their own descriptions, I probably mauled their original descriptions wayyyy over. I love it though! But I really wish some of these books would just turn into movies. Only in dreams. : (

I have always done that. It's like seeing the story as movie in your head. And I have totally forgotten the time and my surroundings.
I have read straight through the night more than once when a book is really engrossing.

It can be really frustrating when its a series of stories, you finish it and you can',t wait for the next installment when it can be a year or more for then next story.

That's why I collect a LOT of series of books. It's like, the best thing ever because you'd always be wondering what happens next! I also have a tendency to wanna sleep with all my books just because I love them and they're like my babies. Yup I've definitely lost myself to them.

If I find a really good book, yeah, people will call my name and I wont hear them. I do hear the character voices in my head, which is why I don't read a lot of books that get turned into movies. The voices arn't the same...
I don't usually see the characters other than choice traits described from the book, so I can remember who's who when they're interacting.

Oh i get completely lost in a really good book
I can spend all day in my room, or oh a hammock, or anywhere with a book and not feel as though i completely wasted the day away.
I draw the characters sometimes, or make up a character (which is basically mee though doesnt always look like me) to fit into it. Yeah ima dork :p but i cant help it!

I always get lost in books. At school if I start reading, I drown everyone out, So when i'm done reading, I forget that I was sitting there in class.
Sometimes if the character would do something, like bite their lip, I would do the same.
And for houses and scenery, I sometimes picture a house that I know, or make it so the story takes place around where I live. Or for the characters.
I forgot what book it was, but mostly every character reminded me of someone I know, So I would picture them as the character.

Reading is so much fun, eh? :P

Yes.. .I do and it's worse I've been know to start reading in the worse places. Like in a shopping mall (was looking for a job and after wards I just sat on the bench and read).

At least I'm aware enough (at least I hope) to answer when someone calls. I know a person or two who even if you're like yelling at them they can't hear you once they start reading.

I can easily answer "yes!" to all of those questions!

Especially the character voices and appearances of the characters and scenery =3 As far as losing myself in the book.... The pages don't fade very often for me. Only some authors and books can make the world truly fade for me. The best one? Patricia A McKillip.

I do that all the time, when I read a book. I lose myself in it, and ignore everything else around me. It worked well in school, when I wanted to ignore the chatter and noise. I feel like I am in the book, it's so cool. =3 I want the new books to Fablehaven and Septimus Heap. Those are a good series, get lost in them all the time.

This happens with me all the time, even if I dont really notice. I start reading a book and as long as im able to get into it I basically zone everything else out for long periods of time.

Alot of differnt books can do this with me, make me zone out. Its all a matter of if im willing to read the book or not. If I dont like the book, I just cant get into it.

Yes, this happens to me all the time! Although, I've got in to trouble several times with people for it because i'll be reading and someone will tell me something, and it's like I don't hear them.
I can't read books with any pictures (except from the front cover because you can't really help that :) ) because I love imagining the characters myself etc. from the Author's description. I love reading and I'll lose myself in most books. I'm rarely disappointed about a book.

I do all of that and when a series that I had been following all through my teenage years ended (the same time I graduated from Highschool) I was in absolute TEARS by the time I read the last line of the last page. I can even get depressed or elated depending on if a book is turning out how I think it should.

Wow... I do that all the time! Then I check back into reality and realize I'm reading a book and not, like, watching a movie or something like that.

It's always like a movie in my head, I see and hear it. I don't consciously see the words.
