Its got a romance genre tied to it but the fantasy part of it is dominate for the most part.
Try looking up Dawn Cook. I particulary recommend her "Truth" Series. Which starts with First Truth, and continues in three books afterward. I think the order after that is Hidden Truth, Forgotten Truth and...I can't remember the last book. But its really good. A personal favourite in the fantasy genre - right next to JRR Tolkin's The Hobbit.

My favorite book is "The Secret of Dragonhome" by John Peel. It's a wonderful fantasy story, though tragically it's out of print, which makes it a tad harder to find.

I got the book in third grade, but didn't actually sit down to read it until a year later. When I did, I loved the book and read it so many time that my paper bound copy started to fall apart.
Everyone I've forced to read it has loved it. As a birthday gift two years ago, my boyfriend found me a mint condition copy of the book. He read it before he gave it to me and liked it so much, he bought himself a copy as well.

It's an epic story about a girl and her brother starting a revolution by accident. There's some romance in the book, so it's kind "chick flick" in book form. NOT A ROMANCE NOVEL though. It has magic powers, war, and dragons that eat a guy's head. Good stuff.

Dragon Rider, Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath, all by Cornilia Funke. Then there's Fable Haven, Fable Haven 2: Rise of the Evining Star, Fable Haven 3: Curse of the Shadow Plague, and Fable Haven 4: Secrets of the Dragon Sactuary, all by Brandon Mull. Those are some really good books that I've read that are Fantasy books. Hope you'll like 'em! :)

City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass ie. The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare. Now, they're not medieval fantasy but they are still frickin' amazing!

I think she's bringing out a new Mortal Instruments Series set in 17th centuary London which might be more to your liking..

But yeah, Mortal Instrumentsall the way!

^,^

If no one's suggested them as of yet, here're two series for you:

George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series beginning with The Game of Thrones. It's not exactly a high fantasy novel series (i.e. abundance of magic, elves, etc.) but more of a medieval fantasy. If you want something deep, well-written and full of political powerplays, this one is certainly for you.

Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever is a good series as well. It's about a leper-author from the modern world that gets sent into a different world where he brings the holy metal (gold) and is made out to be a hero. Not your usual hero-from-another-world story, I promise!

I would say the nightrunner series because the magic in it actually needs wands, crystals, and other things to work and it takes it's toll on the caster. there are also necromancers and alchemists in it.

just a good fantasy romance with lots of politics and an awesome adventure story would be the Kushiel series. Warning, there is a lot of dark and twisted sex in it but if you get past that (I didn;t need to cuz i like that) it is an awesome and well thought out story.

I was also nice to see someone say the coldfire trilogy. I love those stories. thank you.

Hmm, I like how they use magic in the books by tamora pierce.

Anglie 11-01-2009 06:42 PM

yeah any of the Tamora Pierce series are good

then I also liked the book called : City of Bones
it's pretty good

Enchantment by Orson Scott Card. It has a very nice take on magic and charms. One of the best books I have read in a very long time. Makes it very real and brings it home.

Try The Interworld by Neil Gaimen, I just finished the book and I loved it, though at first it may not seem like a fantasy and more like a sci-fi the more you get into the book the more fantasy like it gets. :)

Look for Forgotten Realms books by Ed Greenwood. Read anything with Elminster in it :3

Ohhhh

this is too easy! David Eddings is the author of two series of books, The Belgariad and The Mallorean (each series has five books in it I think) as well as three companion books, Belgarath the Sorecerror, Polgara the Sorcerress (which I spelled wrong) and The Rivan Codex. These series of books inspired my very first ever RP character, who is still alive and well today.lol Anyway, those are my recommendations!

AGREED! David and Leigh Eddings write amazing books... they wrote my favorite book ever: The Redemption of Althalus.... definately worth reading

I suggest anything by Mercedes Lackey or Piers Anthony. Both of them have wonderful imaginations, and their characters are always fun.

One really good book that I know of would be the book "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. I absolutely loved that book, I just couldn't put it down.

Here's a link to the authors website:

I don't know if it's been recommended before or not, but "The Last Herald Mage Trilogy" by Mercedes Lackey is quite great. It's got a bit of minor homosexual content in it, but it's nothing excessive and is written in an extremely tasteful way. (It's not the main plot, though.)

The first book, Magic's Pawn, is basically about a young man named Vanyel. His lifelong dream is to become a bard, but his father doesn't approve of that - thinks it's too "feminine" and dainty. His father sends him to live with his aunt Savil at the High Court. I can't say much more without giving too much away, but it IS a series about magic all and all.

It's a great series, I have no idea where I got the first book from; honestly, one night I was just bored as hell, and I looked through the mess that was known as my bedroom floor and just... found it. Wasn't any of my friends, my room is always clean when they're over and honestly most of my friends don't come to my house to read. Anyway, I read it, and I just... couldn't put it down. Had to go out and get the other two in the series right away.

The Whitewolf Shaman 12-16-2009 03:59 AM

Well, I can certainly recommend three great books, all by the same author. If you've never read them, I suggest Firebringer, The Sight, and Fell by David Clement-Davies. Great fantasy, but not what you are used to in fantasy books, which is what makes it great.

The alchemyst. michael scott
City of bones, cassandra clare
and on an unrelated note, the book, invitation to the game are all good ones...

i love the second one alot, its up there in my top five favorite novels.

TheYaoiButterfly 12-18-2009 07:32 PM

Books by Mercedes Lackey. She's been writing fantasy since the 80s, and she is a very good author. I'd recommend her books to anyone who likes fantasy. She is a very prolific writer and has at least 15 separate series that are all about this one world. Look up her books and see if you think you'd like them.

Another good series is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson. The storyline spans over 3 trilogy series. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I really like what I've read so far. Here's some information about the series

EDIT:
^^;;; oops...someone already recommended Mercedes Lacky's books.

RavynMK 02-17-2010 01:21 AM

Anything by Sherrilyn Kenyon or Kinley MacGregor(McGregor) There is plently of magic bouncing around... and some of it is even medeival... they are all Fantasy.. sadly they are all also romance... but if your anything like me you can always justt skip over those parts... they get boring after the first read anyways...

AngryMojo 02-17-2010 01:45 AM

If you want to lose a month and a half of your life in a book series, read The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I devoured the entire series in about a month, I couldn't stop reading.

Woodlandnymph 02-17-2010 02:12 AM

Anything by Juliet Mariller if you enjoy myth/ folklore based fantasy. The Sevenwater's Trilogy is her first series and that is a retelling of the Irish tale of King Lir and his 6 sons who are turned into swans. His youngest child and only daughter has to go about taking off the enchantment by weaving 6 shirts out of thorns while not talking during the duration.
Her other novels are amazing as well, including two she just came out for young adults, Wildwood Dancing and Cybele's Secret.

Nashawryn 02-17-2010 02:51 AM

I recommend the Axis trilogy by Sara Douglass. I love them and would re-read them any time I get the chance.

EmilyNova 02-17-2010 03:47 AM

The Dark Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan
The Child Thief by Brom
I've read so many fantasy books and they are the first to come to mind as the best I've read so I highly recommend those two.
