Alright. I am such a n00b, but....
Is anyone else here reading Les Miserables as a class in school? or even just for fun? I personally would like to re-read this book. Tell me what you think of it (either so far or in general) Do you like it or dislike it? why? Maybe we could all chat about it on here occasionally and say things like: "OMG! Not FANTINE!!!" or "Thank Jeebus, I thought he was never going to court! Good for him!" or perhaps even: "I hate this book. Why it's just so darn depressing is beyond me."
Either way you look at it, we should share! We could track down where we are and such....
I really want to hear what you guys have to say about it! :)
EDIT: Oh mah gawsh, I just realized I couldn't seem to spell while writing the poll...:O

You are not that much of a newb. I've been thinking about re-reading the book since I read it for class a few years ago, and I only remember bits and pieces. Would this be like a book club type thing where everybody reads through a section and posts? Or should we read at our own pace and put anything vital to plot in a hidden box (can't think as to what those are actually called at the moment)?
I think this could be really fun however it is done!

Les Miserables is one of the books that I want to read since my French class is going to watch the movie of it later on in the year ( In french). Is it good reading material?

Oh my goodness, it is awesome! Very descriptive! I love it so much! It is pretty sad though...(The Miserable, remember?), but I think it's really eye-opening.

Reading at our pace would be good. This could be really fun! Making occasional "spoiler comments" and maybe even discussing some of the book's internal meaning would be fun too!

As you can see from my username, I'm a huge fan of the novel/musical. :). I never have had the pleasure of being forced to read it for school (and I mean that in a good way- I'm not being sarcastic.) I have yet to finish the novel (I'm about halfway through it), but from what I have read of it, it's amazing. I love finding things in it that they took out of the musical(or perhaps never had been in there in the first place)- for me, it's new material. And I love it. XD. Although, unfortunately for most people, even the novel can't make me like Marius. I still find him annoying- although he's a bit less annoying in the book than he is in the musical. However, the novel does make me like Cosette a bit more- she's a bit less annoying here than in the musical.

I love it too! unfortunately, I am, like, the only one who is actually reading the book in my class....everyone else seems to be buying footnotes....CHEATERS!!! XP....
Lol. May I ask you why you chose Javert? as your username, I mean. 'Cuz right now, he's not exactly winning my affections, mate. Jean Val Jean is still angry at him for basically killing Fantine!!! :( :illgetu:
And who else here felt like crying when Bienvenu died? I know that was a little while ago, but still!!!

>_<;. People are too lazy to bother to read a good book, I guess. Oh, well- it'll be their grade that takes a hit when they come across a question on a test that wasn't covered in the cliffnotes version. XD. (Which happens quite often- from what I understand, teachers LOVE to write questions that involve very close readings of the novel in question).
As for why I chose my SN.. I've always been a big fan of his. And I have no idea why- I do agree that he can be a jerk(Especially during Fantine's near-arrest), but for whatever the reason, I've always liked him. I guess I'd have to say I admire his perseverance. ^_^.
I really don't think he's completely at fault at all for Fantine's death, though- she was already sick when she died. Although I won't argue that what he said didn't help. ._.;. Still, I can't say I blame you for not liking Javert- there aren't really many that do, and I can somewhat see why. ^^;.
And Bienvenu dies? :(. I don't know if I'm just not that far yet (The last part that I read before I was forced to stop was when Thenardier was tricking Valjean into giving him money four times, and when Marius was stalking Cosette), or if I just don't remember the earlier parts of the novel- but that is sad. :(.

yeah. it's pretty early on. it was when they first began talking about ValJean's success, and then they said that it was a huge blow....:( but anywho, I can definitely see perseverance as being Javert's many uh....traits...;) but yeah. and I usually think that his heart can be in the right place, no matter how much of a biased influence it may have had. XD
