The Water Trilogy by Kara Dalkey
Has anyone read this trilogy? (Water: Ascension, Reunion, and Transformation)
My friend had been telling me about them for a while, but she didn't own all three books because they were out of print. Finally, she got a hold of all of them and let me borrow each one to read. I loved the books to no end and was torn by the ending. I didn't know if I liked it or not. I was so completely astounded by it; it blew me away! The books follow the two characters Nia and Corwin. The first one centers around Nia, the second Corwin, and the third follows them both equally. I thought the story was so neat! Nia lives in the underwater city of Atlantis. She is from a race of mermyds and the story revolves around the city's position of Avatar and a race of creatures called Farworlders. Nia desperately wants to become an Avatar and the first book focuses on that. The second book follows Corwin on the surface and is basically showing how he begins as a young thief, how he meets Nia, and then becomes somewhat of a sorcerer (or learning to become a sorcerer ;) ). At the end of the third book, you see who they both truly become. It's quite an interesting tale! If you've read the books or if you're interested in the idea, we can discuss it here! I'd love to discuss the story with anyone, after all it is one of my favorites! If you check the picture albums in my profile, you can see a picture I did that was inspired by these books, too. :) |
*spoiler warning for those who haven't read it*
I remember reading those books a long, long time ago. I remember really liking Corwin eventually, but I was sad that the narration switched from Nia to him. Also, I think I disliked the ending at the time I read it, but looking back I think it's cool how the author tied it into the legend of Merlin. |
That's actually exactly how I felt about the ending, but I didn't want to give anything away to those who hadn't and might possibly read it...

<3 Luvluvluvs!!! <3
I liked the ending... I also thought it was neat how they tied the ending to the legend of Excalibur and Merlin... It's kind of funny though looking back- how the series took a turn towards a medieval setting versus the watery Atlantis in the beginning. It all makes perfect sense and everything, given the time back then, but from a literary standpoint I guess it's very unique. At least, out of things I have read. >.> |
 I do like the ending, but it took me a while to get used to it. I LOVED how it tied in the lady of the lake and Merlin, but it took me quite a while to come to terms with the sad situation left between Nia and Corwin. :(
