Hai!
I'm Red Cross Robbery, and Vonnegut is easily my favorite author.
DISCUSS!:
Favorite, and least favorite novels by him.
Any authors or novels that remind you of him.
Reasons why you like or dislike him.
And anything else you feel like mentioning :]
My favorite novels are a tie between Mother Night and Slaughter-House Five.
Both are so fantastic.
And Here's to you Mr. Rosewater probably my least favorite :/
Chuck Palahniuk sort of reminds me of Vonnegut in books like Choke. and Joseph Heller in Catch-22.
I like him because it's nice to hear someone talk without bringing in anything silly or trivial into a discussion about life. I love religion, and I wish I could share it with others, but I cannot find myself to, so when I hear an educated man talk, and things in my mind sort of solidify a little, it makes me happy.
Life is rarely something to be happy with, but you just have to keep it at, what else will you do?
It's nice to see someone talk about these things, without going into the whole "emo, everything pain blood waaah". That's just the message too, the stories themselves are fantastic! :D He uses black humor to a damned science!
Easily my favorite author of all time, and the world lost something very important when he passed away.
Or maybe not important at all...
So it goes.

Yeah, I didn't like God Bless You, Mr.Rosewater that much either. -___-; Mr. Rosewater wasn't a very interesting character and I found I really didn't care that much for what he did as opposed to every other Vonnegut book I've read. : P
My favorite is definitely The Sirens of Titan. I mean, that books is crazy deep. And I hate when people just dismiss it as sci-fi, because it's as much about aliens as it is about religion and the meaning of humanity.

i have read two of his books... one was 'slaughter house five'... i think i read it with the impression that it as going to be bloody, but to my surprise it wasn't what i anticipated... but still really good, although it has been years since i've read it (like ten!) and i have read oh so many books since then... but i still remember it, and i figure it must have been good if i still think of it...
the other one, i'm sorry to say i can't remember the name... i just remember that it was about these burglars and there were kids still in the house and there were murders... i wish i could remember more... i read it in like 10th grade i think... if any one can tell me the name of it, i'd greatly appreciate it!

I think that's a huge problem with all of his novels Tilly. People immediately dismissing his novels as "sci-fi" when in a sense, yes, they are, but at the same time, the Sci-Fi is only a catalyst. The book only uses that storyline to express something deeper. It's always been so with him, and although prevalent amongst... well... quite frankly almost every author to some degree, he was border-line ridiculed for it. I think what you said about Rosewater not being an interesting character is pretty good too. Now that I think about it, that was probably my biggest complaint is the character bored me; along with storyline of course. and I'm sorry Linnea, but I don't remember that one :[
Although it was a change of pace for him, if anyone has the free time, pick up Bluebeard by him. The ending really made up for a slower beginning. It was a wonderful novel :]

I've started reading Bluebeard, the intro is very slow, like you say, but I think he only made it so to highlight how different his life was beforehand. I have a lot of Vonnegut books, I got them for christmas and my mom went through a Vonnegut phase in the 80s, but I have to read 30-odd books and plays for my classes this semester so that's not gonna happen until april. <__<;
Yeah, I liked Rosewater better as a supporting character. I mean, it's like making a book about Kilgore Trout. As much as Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse Five gave him his own little storyline, I couldn't imagine a book about Kilgore Trout, considering he's such a defining foil and supporting character.
Yeah, in Godbless you, Mr. Rosewater, it was just like.. Yeah, we get it. He's generous. People are greedy. U-huh..

Hahaha, to the Rosewater, couldn't have said it better myself haha.
I'm not positive, but I think Kilgore becomes a major character in the Timequake book. I remember it being interesting, but nothing to remember after words. And it is like you say, he is just better off a supporting character.
I actually have read almost every Vonnegut novel besides Sirens... and... I don't know why seeing as how it's one of his biggest, and most people like it better than all the others. I loved Cat's Cradle and Slaughter-House so much. I can't believe people like this one better. I'll have to pick it up, I keep forgetting :[
