Second hand book shops. They're so quaint and adorable, and the books look so well loved.

I like to get a lot of mine from used bookstores; they're not nearly as expensive, and you sometimes are able to find older and less well-known books than the ones they have at the big bookstores, which I actually find that I usually enjoy more than the books everyone else is reading.

I also get a lot of mine used online. I like to search goodreads.com and Amazon in my spare time to find new books, a lot of which are also older/unpopular, and they're often very inexpensive if you buy them used. I actually have a lot of old library books I've gotten over the Internet.

The library! $1 per book (as long as the dog doesn't chew them) and if you don't like it then give it back. Also I have friends who buy books and we swap a lot.
There was a famous second hand book shop in Christchurch, Smiths book shop. It was very narrow and 4 floors tall so you could go up and up and up through stacks of books. I got a Terry Pratchet first edition last year. Sadly... Earthquake. Another part of CHCH that is now just a memory.

The best places to get a book all depends on what kind of book you are looking for.

I go to Borders or Barnes and Nobles to get my books. Or the library. They have amazing books. Also some online books that you buy or just read them online.

As far as extensive variety is concerned, you're most likely going to have to stick to ordering them online. But if you find a quaint bookstore with friendly people and a great atmosphere, cling to it like herpes!
Second hand bookstores are an increasingly difficult industry to break into, so any and all of them need all the ongoing support they can find.
Hope I am a help!
