Mostly why it's suddenly popular is because it's becoming a movie. The actress from True Grit got the leading part.

But another reason is because, it's actually a pretty good book! I'm not a fan of the last two, but they're ok. It's like the Eragon series, it gets worse with each book but starts out amazing!

I guess that's all I can offer on it LOL. I honestly liked it and thought it was great, but the other two books were alright.

The Hunger Games trilogy is actually a well written Young adult series. It deals with mature topics in a much more realistic manner (as far as the world setting allows) than other books in the same genre/age group. These books, more so than a lot of other young adult fiction lean more into the 'adult' than the 'young' which makes them appealing and accessible to adults. They are not idealised and the characters actually have flaws and do things wrong. There are unlikable protagonists and likable antagonists- something that is rare in young adult fiction.

I can see how a generation raised on Harry Potter and the Twilight series don't enjoy these books. They are dark and can be rather depressing. There is no winning or losing or even the typical 'happy ending'. I can even see why people only like the first book (though I find the second and third book to be better when it come to the complexity of theme and politics and war).

Now, I am old. I admit that I am not a high schooler or even a college student. (Yes, all grown up and out in the actual world.) The mature themes of this book appealed to me. Also I found the writing style very nice. They were well edited and well written. Not many writers can pull of a realistic dystopia, but Suzanne Collins has done an excellent job.
