I just read this book--and literally, sped through it in a day because I was unwilling to put it down. The main character is engaging, the story solid. It feels like a younger sibling of the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, or perhaps the Gentleman Bastard (Locke Lamora) books from Scott Lynch.
While the author does rely on some standard fantasy tropes, there's enough new, fresh material to make them shine--for example the "Lawful Good/Lawful Stupid" knight character who is doing everything for the sake of a damsel.
I did not feel there were enough female characters in this book--there were only four memorable ones, and among those there was one (the ribbon-seller girl) whose name we never learned (despite the main character, Malden, making a mental note to get her name. I secretly hope to see her in the next book in the series).
In all, I was engaged, and in some places, surprised by this book. It was solid, entertaining. I'd recommend it if you see it at your library or local used bookstore, especially if you like the series named above.
Has anyone else read this book? If so, do you plan to read the rest of the series?
Also, does anyone have any other recommendations when it comes to books about thieves in a fantasy setting?
