Lackey.. probably one of the first fantasy writers I obsessed over.
I've read maybe half of her books and I'm particually in love with the SERRAted edge series, not to mention the other urban fantasy series she has going with the bard.
If you like that genre of fantasy, I'd definately reccomand Tithe and Valiant by Holly black. Has anyone else read some books that you could reccomend? I'm looking for new ones but it's kind of a rare find, I suppose.

Personally, I like the Valdemar books best. A friend of mine introduced me to them, and they kinda became something we bonded over at the beginning of our friendship.
And we call each other kechara at least once every time we get together.
I also liked the Diana Tregarde novels, though the series was rather short-lived. Those might classify as urban fantasy. I think. x_x

Yeah, I'd consider it urban fantasy too. I heard Lackey got death threats when she stopped writing the series. Kinda creepy, huh?

Yeah. I read the first one back in my freshman year, from what I could remember of it, I really liked it. I should go find it at the library again. Only problem is there's four or so books in the series and they all begin with Elven.

...yeah, that is really creepy.
It sucks, because a good series got discontinued, though I imagine she chose to do so out of her best interests, which is understandable.
So, I'll just content myself with the books I have. And probably imagine my own additional books that will never get written or told. xD

I really enjoy Lackey's books. She was the first author that I really got into and tried to read all of the books that she wrote. I'm still working on that. She's also one of the few authors that I go back and re-read.
SERRAted Edge is very good. It introduced me to urban fantasy. Before that I didn't really know about it.

I adore the Vanyel stories. Adore. Her Valdemar books are the best, in my opinion, followed by the Tarma/Kethry stories, the Hawkbrother/Gryphon stories, and..well, most of her earlier stories. I did like the SERRAted Edge books as well.
I'm not as appreciative of her newer books. I wish she'd cut back on the cowriting and get back to her original excellent standards.
If you liked Tithe (which was very good, by the way) I'd recommend the author Charles De Lint. He incorporates an urban setting but intertwines it with elements of fantasy and myth...it's very difficult to describe, but I adore his style and the images of his stories. It's a very deft blend of fantasy, myth and urban realism. I'm so in love with De Lint.

LOOVED the Valdemar series, though it would be cool to explore more recent works. If I ever wonder into a half price books... or any sort of book store really Mercedes Lackey is one of the first names I start looking for. Andre Norton is pretty good too! I also have a thing right now for Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. Its pretty adult though at times, handling war and matters of slavery and things realistically, much like Mercedes does.
Thats what I always found so impressive about Mercedes. How she blended magic and such unique characters and fantastical species into real world themes. The way magic and things were handled also had a since of realism to them as well somehow.

Mercedes Lackey definitely has a gift. The Valdemar series(s) are my favorite, I re-read those over and over again. I'm not as impressed with her co-authored books, but I read them anyway. I think she has the story about those Diana books on her website -- the whole thing is just creepy. My favorites are the Tarma/Kethry series, probably because those were the first ones I've read, but I love them all!

Really original story take on the relationship between dragons, elves, and humans

XD When I clicked on this forum, I was going to make a ML topic but I needed to check before I did so.
I started reading ML books in about 10th grade (I'm a freshman in college now), and it started with the Mage Wars triology. I was never aware there were other books untill my senior year when I wanted to read the other books by her, and so I jumped in and started reading.
I've read all of the Valdemar series, and I started reading the Elemental Master books, but I've been side tracked with work and school, and I just don't read books anymore.
I go through loops of interests. I obsess with something untill I bore of it and move to the next thing.

Ohh, I love Mercedes Lackey. I've only just recently re-read the Vanyel books for the eighth time. I've read all the Valdemar books, and I've started looking for some of her other books.

I grew an obsession with Mercedes Lackey's work around the same time that I grew an obsession for Anne McCaffery, so I tend to group those two authors together, even though they are obviously (and wonderfully) different.
Let's see... authors I could recommend. Robin McKinley is about the closest one I can think of--she, like Mercedes Lackey, likes to re-write fairy tales in her spare time between writing masterpiece fantasy. ^_^ She also loves a good heroine, and she is an excellent storyteller.

I love her books. My favorite series are The Mage Wars (the gryphon ones), and Vows and Honor (the oathbreakers ones). The very first one of her's I read was Take a Thief. It is one of my favorite books.

I actually picked up Take a Thief by pure chance because I thought the cover looked cool. Which was actually a really good introduction into the series; sort of a gentler push into the whole Heralds genre.
But I've had a friend who has done a three year RP with me with our original Herald characters haha. I actually have a set of whites hanging in my closet right now.

I actually liked the first one the best, out of the dragon jousting books... Of course, I'm all about the character building >3>
I dunno, the other two didn't really shine for me, though. I think my favorite of her writing is probably the Alberich duology... Exile's Honor and Exile's Valor.
