Vampire Kisses which I'm sure you heard of.

Bloodline

Night Bites (Mature content)

Anita blake series and the black dagger brotherhood series. Not for younger audiences.

Try Marked, Betrayed, and Chosen by P. C. Cast & Kristin Cast. Read in that order. It's a series, and very good.

fiarra 08-06-2008 04:56 PM

While vampires are not the central point in the Watch series, they play a role and are, in my opinion, a much more true-to-lore version of the vampire than some other books that may or may not be popular now. *coughtwilightcough*

Anyway, the series is Night Watch, Day Watch and Twilight Watch by Sergey Lukyanenko.

Michelle Bardsley has written a few cute vampire books, and I just bought one by Gerry Bartlett that looks good, have to get back with ya on rating it though since I havent started it yet.And pretty much anything by Christine Feehan is good too.Of course, you have the best already covered with Anne Rice..gotta love LeStat!

Recommended Vampire Reads

So unless you've been hiding VERY thoroughly somewhere far, far out of sight, you've heard of the juggernaut known as the Twilight Saga. As I am currently employed to a bookstore, I have been a first hand witness to the extreme popularity of this quartet, and more often than not I'm the one who's ordering new copies by the tens and twenties to keep up with the demand.

Having just completed the series the other night, I found myself comparing it to other vampire series I've read...

And realized I haven't read all that many.

The only true vampire SERIES I've read in any part was Christine Feehan's Carpathian novels and Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels. Plus maybe a few stand alones that I can't recall off the top of my head.

So what other vampire series or novels have you read? Which ones would you recommend? Would you say they're better, equal to, or less than the Twilight Saga?

It depends on what you like in a book, you know? Personally, after a while, Twilight got old for me and I no longer care for it. :3 It just... urgh. I don't know. Got on my nerves after a while, haha. But if you enjoyed it, you might find the Vampire Academy series pretty good. It's... again, not one I'm a fan of, but I'm finding myself to be a bit of a skeptic when it comes to vampires now. xD It has a lot of cussing, if that bothers you, and kind of keeps to the shallow, cliche concepts of vampire.

I DID, however, enjoy the Silver Kiss, by Annette Curtis Klause (if you read Blood and Chocolate, the same author.) But I REALLY enjoyed this one. :33 Was cute, if not rather sad. Which may just be why I love it that much. Haha.

If you like manga, I am CRAZY in love with Vampire Knight. It keeps the tale of vampires and romance, without making it too strange. Or maybe it IS too strange, but I'm so far in love with it that I can't help it. :3 The drawings are BEAUTIFUL, though and the plot line twists and weaves and can leave you guessing - I promise. :3 You can read it at OneManga.com, if you don't want to buy it.

I'm half done a book called Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. The main character is not a vampire, but her roommate is so it is not directly about vampires. It's a bit on the more mature side, but I can say wholeheartedly that it is one hundred times better written than all of the books in the Twilight series put together.

Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite

I, Vampire (I can't remember the author's name)

Both are excellant books. I think that I, Vampire is a series (although the first book can be read as a stand alone), but I haven't read them yet.

MoonGrave 01-15-2009 05:55 AM

This is my impression: everything is better than Twilight.

With that said, I'd suggest reading not only series about vampires, but short stories and folklore about them as well.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a must. I suppose Anne Rice's vampire novels are alright but I got a bit frustrated with some of the slower parts and the the more whiny effeminate vampires (Lestat in particular). If you like manga, Vampire Hunter D by Hideyuki Kikuchi is quite good. The Vampire's Promise by Caroline B. Cooney is an interesting approach to vampirism, in my opinion, and worth the read. I would definitely suggest (if you're old enough to get them) Love in Vein and Twice Bitten edited by Poppy Z. Brite. Also, an awesome teen's series with tons of twists and adult decisions is The Darren Shan Saga, which is a fictional account of the life of Darren Shan; every single book in that series is good, I kid you not.

Ah! My apologies. I just joined today and wasn't up to the task of digging through ALL of the forum subjects to make sure I wasn't repeating a subject. Thanks for setting me straight. ;3

I TOTALLY forgot two more books!

They're not DIRECTLY about vampires, but more vampire theories, but they definitely make for interesting reads.

The first is called Sweet Blood, which is about a girl who calls herself a "vampire". She believes that vampires were never really these mythical creatures, but people who had diabetes, long before they had discovered it. VERY interesting theory, VERY interesting book. I enjoyed it immensely.

Another is a thriller called Thirsty. :3 This one... wow. Maybe it's cos I'm impressionable and skittish and far too sympathetic with characters, but Thirsty left me feeling kind of hollow and freaked out. xD It's set in our world, kind of in our time. The whole setting... was kind of confusing to me, but this kid basically wakes up turning into a vampire of sorts.

It's one CRAZY book, I'm telling you.

If you want to stray from the conventional path, check into those books. :3

I really like the Jaz Parks books from Jennifer Rardin. I just discovered them recently and they're really good. They're all the goodness of a vampire book without all the sex that's usually associated with it. Yeah, characters are attracted to one another. There's a lot of playing. But the closest anyone's gotten to that is when your main vamp drinks the blood of someone else in the group. It's rather awesome. <3

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice are by far my favorite vampire books. Granted, I've only read Interview with the Vampire and half of The Vampire Lestat. Still, I quite like them!

Twilight... I thought Twilight kind of sucked, the first book was terrible, the second book was terrible, the third book was devcent, and the fourth book was actually really good... And then the end just sucked. I've also sworn off Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series... Mostly because I read abook by that author and it was the worst book it has ever been my displeasure to read. I am not going to give her books a second chance.

Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid novels are about a succubus, but it features two vampires, Cody and Peter, as minor characters and friends of Georgina's. I love them, they're great vampire characters. I know Richelle Mead also has a series called 'Vampire Academy' but I've yet to read it. I have it on hold at the library, though! Richelle Mead is a fantastic author, I look forward to reading them.

And I also checked out a book called Suck It Up, I forget the author's name, though... It's a vampire novel about an oddity of a vampire.

Nocere 01-16-2009 02:54 PM

I've been meaning to read The Vampire Chronicles, but I keep putting it off for some reason. I adore vampires! I should be more enthusiastic about reading. I never really got into Twilight. I don't know if anyone has read any of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, but there are some vampires in there as well. I think one of his books I read had a vampire who was off of drinking blood, but had become addicted to coffee instead.

For now, I'll just stick to writing about vampires. I have a few short stories I need to finish that have vampires in them.

Hey Iltu! In case you should wander this way again, I'm just curious... what Laurell K book did you read that turned you off from her? It took me five before I gave up on her, but then, I tend to be overly generous. XD So I'm just wondering which one it was because I need to know things like that. *laughs*

Iltu 01-16-2009 04:35 PM

Ebony- It was Death of a Darklord, or something to that effect. It was just... the beggining was boring. The middle was actually really good! ...And then the end was so terrible, and rushed, and left so many loose ends that I couldn't stand it. o_o;

I tend to be generous with authors and books myself, but that one just... I could not take another book by her, I don't think. XD;

Jazzxsky 01-19-2009 04:59 PM

I love the Cirque Du Freakseries by Darren Shan. I just finished with the third one and can't wait to get to the library to get the rest of the. I actually kind of like it better than Twilight (and that's saying something.)

ShadowFlamedWolf 01-20-2009 04:34 AM

has anyone here read sex, lies and vampires? i cant remember who it's by but its a great book very funny. I'd tell you what its about but it could kill it for some of you who might want to read it.

Moondey 01-27-2009 08:04 PM

I can tell you two of my favorites if that would help at all.

"Sunshine"- Robin McKinley
Well this book not only has vampires, it also has magic! I loved it so much I pass it to all of my vampire loving friends. A girl goes out and gets kidnapped (the girls name is Sunshine...or is that her nickname?!? oh well) she is thrown into a ballroom with a chained and starving vampire. They end up doing many things, other than him killing her...I can't say much more or I will give away the whole story....

Then there is "Crimson Kiss" (I don't remember who wrote it)
IF you can find this book you should read it! It's all about vampires, and obsession, with some other things hidden under all of it. I can't remember all about this book, other than its not really sutible for anyone who is weak hearted, or young. But it is an amazingly captivating story. Sorry that I'm not a huge help on the description of it.

If you want a lighter, more amusing and humorous vampire romance, I would suggest Lindsey Sands: ((following books may not be in order))
# Bite Me If You Can by Lynsay Sands
# A Bite to Remember by Lynsay Sands
# A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands
# Single White Vampire by Lynsay Sands
# Tall, Dark & Hungry by Lynsay Sands

o: I <3 you. Those were the books I would have said. I'd also possibly say Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, but they're not really vampires... More like immortal vampire slayers.

Mindless Games 02-01-2009 02:35 AM

There's Vampire Kisses
it's kinda like twilight, though
