i've been a Pratchett fan for a number of years now, the first book of his that i read was Maskerade, which was the book of the month from a book club, one of the few that i read then actually kept!
i think i've read nearly all the Discworld series now, plus 2 out of 3 of the Johnnie Maxwell stories, plus Good Omens with Neil Gaiman.
i wish there were more authors out there with Pratchett's wit and sense of irony, i've introduced him to an American friend of mine, his first read was The Thief of time, one of my favourites, which he loved and promptly leant to his mother to read too, and she also thoroughly enjoyed it, they are now both avid readers of his so i feel proud for spreading the word in a small way :)

As I posted on another thread, Small Gods is one of my most favorite Discworld books, easily my favorite non-recurring character book.
My favorite character, as Death doesn't really count since he's more of a Discworld landmark, I'd have to say Vimes. I've loved every Watch book (except Thud! which I've yet to read; I started re-reading the series in order about a year ago and have just caught up to Night Watch). Honestly, there are too many characters I don't like. At most, I find them forgettable.
I am curious ... not a lot of people seem to appreciate Rincewind. To be fair, I thought The Lost Continent was one of his worst books, but still enjoyable. And Interesting Times was one of the better ones. I do agree that Rincewind's time is up, but I think he deserves one last book for an appropriate send off ... maybe he'll actually go out as a hero?
... nah, probably not. But maybe he'll become the new Alfred, since Alfred's time is almost up...

i have to say that Sam Vimes is probably my favourite too, i get your point about Rincewind, though i wasn't aware that he was under appreciated, maybe it's more that people just prefer other characetrs.
or that, you meet Rincewind first when you start your Discworld journey and he gets a little forgotten about along the way? i enjoyed The Last Continent, but then there are few of the Discworld series that i wouldn't read again.
Pyramids is maybe my least favourite, and of the newer issues that i've got to read, Going Postal was the most enjoyable for me.

Pyramids is at the bottom of the list for me too, jellysundae. It was just awfully dull compared to his other works. Same with Equal Rites, although I'd love to hear from Esk again.

i wouldn't call Pyramids dull
It's just not my cup of tea?
The story is still interesting
Equal Rite is interesting too i thought
Hmm i don't know XP
I rarely find any books dull
I like the process of reading and finding out what the author has in store for his reader.
But what i cannot take is when it's full of words?
Lord of the Rings has extremely interesting storyline
But i just cannot read finish any of the books
Not just because of the characters, but more of it being rather hard to read..
Sort of like a textbook XP

Night Watch was the last book I read before I decided to reread the whole thing in order, so yes I've read it and loved it. I almost stood up and cheered when you find out how Reg died ... and then he gets right back up, pissed as hell. Awesome. Pratchett is probably my number 2 living writer ... I hate that, like Stephen King, he's typecast as a "humorous" writer, where both use the medium (humor or horro) as merely a guide post to greater things. As a writer in general, jokes aside, Pratchett gives you just enough detail and momentum to get a picture and an idea and keeps things moving. If he wanted to, he could drag each book out to Terry Goodkind length and still make it a fantastic read. It just probably wouldn't be as consistently funny.

i find it intriguing when people have totally different opinions about the same book, i really enjoyed Monstrous Regiment, i liked Moving Pictures too, which is one that i often see slated, maybe it's Gaspode that makes that tale enjoyable for me though?
i too am very fond of Vetinari, watching his character develop has been a pleasure.
i need to do some online research to find out which Pratchett books i have read, i only own about 6, all the rest were lent to me, and stupidly i didn't make a list of the titles  so when i see titles now i don't know if i've read them or not T_T
Thud! was the last one i read though and i thoroughly enjoyed that, i think it's safe for me to say that if a story is set in Ankh-Morpork then i'm going to enjoy it 8)

*chus neko* <3 XD
I love Pratchett's stuff XD But saying which book I love best is hard. Very much so... Because it changes depending on my mood and what I reread and so on XD
Most loved characters would be Death (I adore him... I can't really say why XD), the Wizards (and how they keep squabbling XD Unseen University life sounds so good thanks to them. I'm talking about the ArchChancellor and his mates, not Rincewind. Rincewind kinda annoys me.), the Librarian (ook! Do I need to explain anything more?) and Vimes.
Currently very amused with the Gooseberry(TM) too XD What would you like me to do, Insert-Name-Here? XD
I hadn't read any of his books in a while due to lack of time - really didn't read much in the last year when I used to practically eat books. But during my last trip, I picked up Thud! at the bookshop and had so much fun reading it that I plan on getting whatever I'm missing, which shouldn't be much. Think Thief of Time was the last one I got before that.

the Gooseberry is a fine example of Pratchett humour, along with the iHum and 'clang'
if you met Ridcully in RL don't you just know that you want to give him a good slap pretty swiftly?
Hex sounds like good fun to me though, i'd like to see a conversation between Hex and Leonard of Quirm 8)
I think Death is a favourite of a lot of people, when you go back and read the Colour of Magic again he's got no character at all in that, you don't realise how much he's developed until you go back to the beginning again.
Think what fun it would be to have Mr.Pratchett as a dinner guest..

Good omens is indeed, good.
you can spot his wit in that too, how every tape (that dates the book!) you ever have in a car eventually turns into Queen's Greatest hits, regardless of what it started out as
