Probably some of the best books ever, if you've read them you'd know. :)

James, I merged your thread with the Orson Scott Card one.

On topic: I saw Ender in Exile for sale in the bookstore yesterday. I am so excited and can't wait for it to go to paperback so I can buy and read it.

I'm a big fan of the Ender's Gamer series. I think I own almost all of them. Still haven't read them all though. But they ARE rather good.

Ah you should totally read them. Do you have the Shadow series as well? Or just the main 4?

I'm a big fan of Orson Scott Card. Ender's Game is definitely my favorite. The Alvin Maker series is neat, although it helps if you know the poem it's based on, which is published in his first anthology, Maps in a Mirror. There's a second anthology out more recently, though I havent' been able to get it yet. Of his individual works, Hart's Hope is very interesting, although... I'd caution those who are younger or more fragile to postpone reading it. (It messed my mind up when I was 16...) <.<;

I've read most of the shadow series as well. I fell completely in love with bean in the Shadow of the Hedgemon. He's become my all-time favorite character in that book series. I love how Petra stands up for him and does everything she can to stay with him and make him happy... even love the fact that she goes against his wishes to try making herself happy with him. ^.^

Feyona: Ah yes. Bean is awesome. I actually couldn't get into the Shadow series as much as I wanted to though. A lot of the political atmosphere made it not as fun to me. =X I will have to give them another shot though.

Liath: Hooray! Speaker is my favorite book. :)

I reread Enders Game and read the Shadow series because of the newest book. (my sister said it had major spoilers) It was amazing. I didn't like the original, still don't really, but I love the Bean series. I also love the books after Enders Game. And enchanted is awesome. I also read Wyrms, which is creepy, and reminds me of Shadow of the Hegemon a bit. He really loves genetics.
If Ender in Exile hadn't come out, I don't think I would have reread them. since I was a lot younger when i read them, it gave me a new perspective. You really see all the nuances and character depth. As a writer I'm jealous.

I love the political stuff, but I could see where that would be off-putting. I think Xenocide was my favorite of the main series. The one with the pequininos. I'm a big geek, so I love politics and stuff. That's also (to go random here) why I love the Dragons of Pern series.

:o The newest book has major spoilers for the Shadow series?!

Buu... Perhaps I will have to go re-read them now. Maybe being a couple year older will let me appreciate them more. ^^;;

I remember reading Wyrms and thinking how strange a book it was. Hehe. But I love all the genetics and other stuff that he puts in his books.

I've read Enchantment and Rebekah by him and I liked them both. Especially Rebekah though since I thought it was just really interesting to imagine her point of view from a Bible story I know well.

I have a couple of the Ender series books in my room I'll eventually read.

:o I didn't see this post until just now.

But yay I'm glad you agree on the amazingness. :heart: Honestly.. half the time I am re-reading it, I tear up for the whole ending because of the emotion involved. Sometimes I even just flip to the back of the book and read those last few chapters, especially right after they've signed the treaty and they're all lying in the grass and he tells her the truth.. ;_;

I've always enjoyed most of his writing, but stuck mostly with the Homecoming and Ender series. For a while, he and a couple of other authors had a forum for writers where they would post some of their essays. It was pretty interesting (this was 10+ years ago). He also had a couple of books that brought the perspective of Mormon women who were in polygamous marriages. I could be wrong about this, but I think he used journals/diaries written by women who experienced that sort of lifestyle. It was interesting.

I've read Ender's Game several times now, and it always surprizes me with its power. Orsosn Scott Card certainly has the ability to hit you with an emotional sledgehammer. And make you think. I haven't been able to bring my self to read any of the other Ender books yet, though it's been a long time since I read Ender's Game - mostly because they happen to be the kind of book that disappears from the library and winds up in that black hole where good books go to hide, and partly because I sort of felt that Ender's Game was a complete thing in itself. I felt it was closed when it ended and that saying any more would undermine the structure of the original - however, if someone would like to convince me otherwise, I would only be too glad to chang my mind!
I've also read Hart's Hope, whih was very strange and not quite as memorable, and also Enchantment, which I loved to bits. The trans-temporal culture shocks were my favourite. Often in time-travel stories, the ideologies of the various groups are depicted as pure ignorance on the part of the earlier time period, but here Card went to great length to show that certain prejudices and thought patterns were a result of the time period and the very different culture they each lived in. And the ending, while it poses problems, is entirely human. I also love the blend of fairy-tale and folklore in its original, gritty form. Card gives his characters such life with it - they practicaly breathe.
'Kay, I'll stop waxing rhapsodic about it now. :D

Hey! I just finished reading "Ender's Game" and loved it. I would really like to discuss it with any of you who have read it. It's rather old, but it is a classic. Give me a heads up Ender fans ^___^

What did you think of Speaker for the Dead? That book pretty much tops any list of favorites I can ever come up with.

OK...I finally re-read my Ender series books.

I'm missing Xenocide, but I know I read it, cuz I vaguely remember parts of it that were referred to in the books following it.

Speaker of the Dead really was a fantastic book. I remember when I read it the first time... I was quite a bit younger, and it really stuck with me. The Piggies were very intriguing.

\o/ I actually haven't read all of the Shadow series yet. I got to the... third one I want to say.. and I got bored of it a little. I dunno.. all the politics and intrigue didn't click with me and I didn't develop as much love for the characters.

I think part of what I love about Speaker for the Dead is the character interaction. You get to see Ender dealing with people with problems very different from his own.. but at the same time just as important to everyone involved. It's a humanizing element that to a degree was missing in Ender's Game when so much of what he does is a product of the manipulation of the adults around him. In Speaker we finally get to see first-hand what happens when he has the control.

That same note is why I love Ender in Exile as well since we get to see the progression from child to the adult we see in Speaker.
