H'okay, this may be a bit of a stretch, but has anyone ever read/heard of the Wraeththu series by Storm Constantine?

Basically, some time in the near future, humanity self destructs and is (somewhat) replaced by Wraeththu, a group of fancy-pants hermaphrodites, who are the result of some hot shot scientist who didn't have her head in the game. What's next, microscopic robots who have free will and can reproduce? What follows are the crazy misadventures of several different characters, over the course of 50-some years. And magic, and romance, and intrigue!

It ranks pretty high on the list of really weird and hard to explain books, but it's also one of my favorite series, ever. Except for the fact that I don't really like the central character; he keeps stealing the organs of my favorite characters. Not cool, man. ;o;

So, since I've pretty much failed at explaining the plot with any clarity, you can get more information here. Some may say too much information. Yeeeah. >.>

Now to see if this is more obscure than I thought...

  • Get out of my head, doppelganger! D:<

Have you gotten to the 2nd trilogy yet? That's when all the really crazy stuff happens.

I'm working on it, it just might take a while....

Actually, I'm thinking about ordering it when I go to the Library today. I need to stop just watching X-Files and reading comics. I can't read actual books anymore. Thanks a lot, manga.

I glanced over the threads for Storm Constantine before I made my thread, but didn't see this one. xD

I'm currently reading Wraeththu: The Wraiths of Will and Pleasure.

I love her writing style. And I loved the first book of the first trilogy. But I found myself unable to sympathize with some characters. A lot of them were extremely impersonal for some reason, and I just didn't get hooked on people for the most part.

That said, I still adore Pell. He's the one character that I actually latched onto and would be interested in reading more about. I like him twice as much as Cal, though Cal was pretty hot.

I'll probably give it a try again, because her writing was so amazing, though.

Heh.. my friend named her bunnies after Vaysh and Chrysm. Which is funny because they're females and silly because they're lesbian bunnies.

  • Really? Which ones? Personally, I was never that drawn to Cal's rock star/cult leader-esque charisma, like everyone else and their dog. Which makes things a bit difficult, being that all of Wraeththudom is The Cal Show, but I manage. xP

I never understood why so many people hate Pell as much as they do. I mean, sure, he was a pretty sucky father/husband, but he's gotten better at it. It's not like he killed anyone's favorite character (has he even killed anyone at all?), and he doesn't even come close to being Loki-grade annoying.

Well, Cal mostly. It's all his fault! :x Yeah, he is a bit like a glam rock star. But I can't think of Pell with anyone but him.

I know! Pell's like a real person with feelings and flaws, but he's not a bad guy. I always felt sorry for him because of the whole dying thing. He's just sort of forced to do stuff he doesn't want to, and he develops around that.

Aww, now I want to read it again. I'd forgotten just how much I liked Pell. lol

  • I've found that most anything can be blamed on Cal, even if it has nothing to do with him. I don't think anyone would question you, either, because what wouldn't Cal do?

    For a Klondike bar?

Seriously, though. I'd imagine that I'd be rather pissy, too, if I was forced to be Thiede's stone golem for how many decades? He probably made him do his laundry. Nobody needs that.

Hah! Also who wouldn't Cal do? He always came off as a bit of a slut to me. Not that hara sex isn't lovely, but I always saw him as much too highly sexualized. Ah well. We can't all be perfect, right? XD

Oh god, doing Thiede's laundry... I laughed out loud. I could totally picture Pell standing there with a sweaty jock strap looking very aggrieved while Theide is off laughing to himself.

  • Ah, but who wouldn't Cal do... for a Klondike bar?

No, really. I'm askin'. Like, maybe... Terez before the makeover? Or Diablo, though even Loki thought he was doable for a bit there.

Nah, I'm sure he'd do them, too.

But you know Thiede is just hovering around, watching you do whatever it is you do. So at any point you can just pan upwards and see a Mufasa-esque bust of Thiede in the clouds. Oh yeah, he saw what you did just there.

Thiede: Hey, I said no starch. There. Don't be so down, you know how magical that jock strap is? It's all in the sweat, baby. Oh yeah, and by the way: You're the one true king. You got that? Eh? Yeah, yeah, I know you know... so, uh, how's it goin', uh, over there... with you? You wanna go, uh, do something? Tonight, maybe? Oh, okay. Uh...

And he just keeps going on like that. He's omnipotent; he can get away with it. God, that's got to be awful.

How about this! Cal: Jedi. Confirm/deny?
