I really liked Pride and Prejudice. I thought it was extremely well-written, and very romantic. Though some of Jane Austen's other books seem to be kinda the same to it. That's the only problem I got with her stuff.
I loved how Elizabeth and Darcy end up together. Of course, it was a bit predictable, but that's ok, [: I think they might have changed a bit MUCH though, but whatever...

MOVING ON...I absolutely love Pride & Prejudice. Colin Firth is an absolutely shmexiful Darcy. :squees then collects herself: I first saw it in play form. I absolutely LOVED it then, so it is good I saw that first because I would have hated it had I already read the book.
I think that it is important to understand Jane Austen's life to understand her books. I'm not saying it's a necessity by any means, but it does help make things more clear. They say people write what they know and if you look at her work, they all have such evident parallels to her life.

i have to completely agree with you on the colin firth comment. he was the best Darcy and after watching the mini series i hated the new movie. it was just all wrong in my mind.
and i also agree with you on the understanding Jane Austen's life. it does help a lot and i think thats why a lot of her plots are so similar. because she was so sheltered in her life and what she knew as many women were then.

Thank you!!! I haven't watched the new movie. I'm afraid I'll hate it.

I absolutely love Pride and Prejudice! One of my favorite books. I do not think that the way it was written is boring. The way people people spoke in that time period is beautiful to me....as long as I can understand it.
I love the humor and just everything about the book. It's one of those books that brings out every emotion. I liked the new movie of it, but they did change things up a bit. The book is better, but someone watching the movie without reading the book would think that it was an awesome movie.
I haven't seen the mini series yet, but hope to soon.

I liked pride and prejudice. I loved her character Elizabeth. I wish I read that book for the Victorian novel we had to read for English Lit class in grade 12 instead of Wuthering Heights...I almost died reading that book *shivers* yep I wished I had read Pride and Prejudice

I liked Pride and Prejudice, but it isn't my favourite book by Austen. I greatly prefer her writing style in later works like Mansfield Park... I find both Sense and Sensibility and Pride a bit awkward to read.
Heh. I first read that book back in grade three, and I've been a rabid Austen fan ever since. And I love the classic movie version, every hour of it.

I loved this book! I had heard the Jane Austen has an annoying tendency to reveal character traits with lists instead of actions, and she did a little, but she has a fantastic talent for creating realistic and interesting conversations. I saw the movie before I read the book, but I still loved it!

I remember I tried to read Sense and Sensibility when I was in eight grade and I didn't understand a word. But in my Senior year of high school I watched Pride and Prejudice, and I immediately went and read the book. Ever since then, I can't put down Jane Austen.
Personally, I dont see a reason to dwelve deep into what Jane Austen meant in her books. She meant nothing, she was just witting simple love stories. The fact that things were different in her time are reflect in her books, and we shouldn't judge her characters as being stereotypical girls of that age. Everyone changes as things progress in our lives, and so do the characters in her books. Its not a matter of their becoming good little housewives, its just how things were done back then. And as a matter of fact, although we might not turn into little housewives today, we still change.

It's very easy to hate because it is all dialogue and not a lot of action. This is because when it was written, reading was a social activity to be done with friends. It would have been read out loud with someone imitating the voice of the characters so you could tell the difference. Jane Austen herself was a very good reader and probably hence why she has incorporated soooo much of it =) I quite enjoyed the book myself but it could be slow going at points just because they would be sitting around in one room just having a chat. Very different from books you read today
