HP Lovecraft, definitely. His works are just so bizarre at times, yet it's enough to keep you gripped to the book. I really love the way he writes, too. It flows so wonderfully.

Poe, definitely. It's so macabre at times, and it really conveys the depths of depravity of the human soul. I don't really think much of 'horror' writing, cuz I can't get scared from that, but I think Poe's writing is beautiful, yet chilling at the same time.

Poe is a poet.....what he wrote is wonderful, yes dark and macabre but so beautifully combined that sounds like music ^^

I don't like Poe very much, but I do enjoy reading his short stories. I think it's amazing that he is the writer that first introduced horror to literature. His books are fascinating, and morbid, and so chilling to the bone. My favorite story would have to be the Cask of Amontillado -- tales of revenge are always fun to read.

Wow, you make really interesting thread Trinity. I feel like I'm stalking you. Haha, I'll just be looking through the forums and be like "Wow, that place looks cool" and you either started the thread, or are posting in it. Haha.

But my favorite horror book is Watchers by Dean Koontz. I'm not exactly sure if it totally counts as horror, but it scares me so bad everytime I read it. I'll be afraid of nighttime for like a month afterwards.

Hmmm...I think the best horror book I read...

was either 100 recorded lynchings... I practically threw up...it was sooo graphic wording...

and this one I can't remember the name it was fictious but it was dealing with the torture methods used on the convicted women, in the Salem Witch Trials...

really gory stuff o-o;;;

  • Koji Suzuki's Ring and Spiral.

How many other ghosts do you know who'd combine their DNA with the smallpox virus, then combine that with a VHS tape that will kill you and/or make you give birth to her clone after watching it?

    I thought not.

I love Lovecraft. As a writer/storyteller, I'm not a fan of the way his work flow; it's less the words, in my opinion, and more the pure energy of his ideas. His stuff makes you question your sanity.

Plus, that Xbox game based on his "Shadow Over Innsmouth" still gives me nightmares.

John Saul is definitely creepy. I remember the first horror book I read, The Shining by Stephen King. I could not sleep at night for days after. I was pretty young when I read it, but it does a good job at revealing how twisted the human mind is.

Poe is amazing too.

I've read Perfect Nightmare (and it was a nightmare), Midnight Voices (not my favorite, but it's still weird/good), Second Child (possibly the one that's stuck with me the most), Black Creek Crossing (weird and slightly predictable, but a good read nevertheless), Suffer the Children (one of my favorites), and Black Lighting. I think that's all. I really need to get to the library and get more of his books. Which ones do you recommend Trinity?

The Claidi Journals was listed under horror in my old school library.

I don't think it's horror, though.

Thanks for the recommendations.
No I haven't gone to his site, but I'm going right after I'm done posting here.

Oh and Robot Jane, I read the Claidi Journals. I enjoy them, but I don't see how they're horror either.

I know. It was really weird. The librarians were all like, we don't know who put that horror sticker on there!

When I first got into V.C. Andrews I found her stuff under horror. Her books are twisted, but not really horror. Weird....
