Strange Books
Since we decided to redecorate our living room, we had to take all the books out of our bookcase. In her hippie days, my mom was very interested in organics, meditation, yoga, and alternative health care stuff. So, we ended up finding some interesting book titles while packing up all the old books. Very odd titles, things like "Helping Others Using Foot Reflexology", "The Healing Properties of Gemstones", or "Homeopathical Remedies". There are also some random ones like "General Carpentry", "The Elements of Language Style" and even "How to Make your Child into a Genius".
So, it got me wondering, what strange books do you have lying around at your house? Or am I the only one whose parents are weird and never throw things out? |
Those sound like delightful books... I'd love to own them.
"The gentle art of verbal defense." "A dummy's guide to fairies." "Heaven Exposed (a guide to the inner workings of heaven according to Kabbalah, written like a sci-fi and explained like a tech help center.)" "The Basics of Equestrianism." "Beyond the Veil: a guide to the other side." "Spirit Allies." And more. Be reassured, you are not alone. We were cleaning out our 'attic' room and found boxes and boxes of old punch cards, from back when computer programmers made code by punching holes in thousands of little paper cards. We threw them away. |
do strange books include anything and everything related to the stars, then yes...
Well I know it isn't weird... But I recently found the old med books my dad had "just in case" something went wrong and all the world's doctors disappeared... They had stuff in them that has been disproven.. It made me laugh! Oh and we have like every Goosebump book ever... I don't even know why... |
I'm going to move this topic into the Books forum since this is a discussion about books~.

Yeah, we haven't redecorated in ever so long, so there's lots of stuff on the bookshelves that I hadn't even known was there. |
Hey! I used to have "The Healing Properties of Gemstones" XD
When I was a kid I was obsessed with stones/gems. I collected them and actually was into spells, healing, etc. lol I'm far away from all that now. I also have "Everybody Hurts". It's a book about scene kids XD It amused me. |
o.O; I have a whole bunch of books on softball and pitching from waaay back when my dad was trying to make me into some kind of super player. XP One even tells me how to eat to the best softball advantage. It's soooo weird. I never read one. Oh! And my school had a bunch of punch cards left over, so I took a bunch and decorated them and now they're bookmarks for my normal books XP

I don't really have a lot of wierd books.
There's one dinosaur one that shows you "the right way to eat without a fork" |
I don't know if i'd call it strange, but i found a book that was some past family memebers and was a over hundred year old story about cindrella. One would never have known that was what the story was though.
I didn't read it all but it started off about a little boy and girl who lived on an island. Guess it shows how much fairytales change over the years. I think it's quite safe to say we have a few strange books. Another one would have been Confessions of A Truck Photographer. Bet that was sordid. :D |
Odd books...
I have several. Divine Magic I think one was called. Another was a law book, one of six, but I only have it, and I'm sure the laws have changed by then. |
The Serial Killer Files by Harold Schecter. o_o
Its actually very interesting. :3 We also have a few X-Ray and MRI books laying around because my dad recently went to school to be an MRI/X-Ray tech. |
Lots and lots of grammar books. They're all packed away, but when they're unpacked in the new house, I'll post the titles. My parents took some linguistics courses back in the day, so we have some very strange ones. Along with some grammar books from their elementary school days... >.>

Wierd books?
Well, my sister bought the book "What Happens in Harry Potter Book Seven". She bought it some months before Deathly Hallows came out. I thought it was weird because is was a good sized book about another book that has yet to be released at that point. She read it like it was the Bible. |
Well, my mom has "Making It in Radio," "Airplane Crashes 3" (that's a series?!) and a Partridge Family episode guide store on her shelf. My dad collects martial arts books.
|
Hmm.. My parents do have many strange books, but I can't name them all. The books I've gotten from family though, all happen to be christian self help books. None of which I've read. I tried reading one but found it so.. Ugh. I plan on giving them to the library eventually. I have so many of them. They waste space.. *Stares at books inside closet* .... I put them all on the floor to make room for my manga.

They are mostly at my grandma's house with all my uncle's old books. I can't remember specific ones, but I remember Plato's "The Republic" was there. Which isn't really strange. There was this series for "the family" and one was on witchcraft. All the stuff I learned from that book was definitely not rated "for the family"! I learned all the wrong stuff you never wanted to know about witchcraft.

My mom has a collection of drug books for every year dating back to 1998, when my dad took the earlier editions and burned them.
She doesn't throw stuff away well, she wanted to find homes for them, even though some were, like, 10 years old and useless. |
