- I can't really say, I just read the manga and the manga alone D: . Although I heard from a random person in the bookstore that the book version of it was really good too :3. And my friend watched the movie and said that was great as well. I found the manga slightly disturbing though O____x. To me, the manga is one of those books where you sit there all day in the bookstore reading it and then that night regret it when you think about it the whole night >____<.

The film and mangas are faves of mine. All three media have the same story. the only difference is that the book and the mangas have a far more in depth character system sinse you hear the story from almost all the people rather than just one like in the film. the mangas are more screwed up than the film with far more sexual reference and graphic violence. personaly i like them better because they make me feel more involved with the characters

-pokes Jayms- Ask me nicely and I may let you borrow it.
The book is AMAZING! You should so totally read it! There isn't quite so much character development as in the mangas though but it's a wonderful read, it pulls you in to the story more than the mangas or film ever could.
All three media are great though in different ways.

Personally, I loved the movie the most.
It was the first Battle Royale media I ever saw. It spoke to me and really striked me as an amazing story. It was by far on of the best movies I've seen.
Then I read the book; it was really good! I liked the movie better though.
But still, if you get the chance, read it! It's incredibly detailed when it came to character backgrounds, and stories behind stories.
I've yet to read the manga, I'm dying to read them. :3

I'd have to agree with Alegretto's assessment, even though I've never actually read the manga.
I read the book two weeks ago and devoured it. I'd seen the movie beforehand, but I personally preferred all the juicy tidbits and insights the novel had to offer. For instance, Book Shinji > movie Shinji. The movie just didn't do him justice. Plus the movie had all of those random bits with Sakamochi going outside and offering that girl an umbrella. Yeah, like that would've ever happened. XD
Oh an almost unrelated side note, I find this piece of BR fanart a little too amusing for my own good. XD

I've only seen the movie. I've been meaning to read the book but my library doesn't have it so I'm like one paycheck away from buying it. Once I've read the book I'm planning on reading the Manga. I personally loved the movie. I'll keep everybody posted on how the book and manga are.
@Funkitated: I absolutely LOL'd at that fanart. LOVE it! <3

The Book is much better than the movie in my opinion. I have yet to read the manga, however, I have heard a few good things about it and hope to get a chance to in the near future. The book offers a lot more insight as to why Battle Royal even takes place and much more information on the students themselves. I hope you get a chance to read this classic action story, it's worth the time.

The manga... was amazing. I own the entire series, the japanese movie.. was... eh. Not so good and ran through the story line WAY WAY WAY too fast. I have yet to find and read the book, so hopefully it's good. The manga, is amazing on it's own. If you dont mind blood... :D

I haven't read the manga but I want to
The book is amazing, even better than the movie in my opinion because of the details it goes into. You actually find out why the crazy scythe girl (forgot her name) became the way she is, and well you get a look into all of the characters' past and the people you found 'evil" in the movie, you actually pity them in the book because of their past. Also, the reason for the BR was changed slightly in the movie. The movie makes almost no mention of the government but the book goes into greater detail about how the government was ran.
The book is easy enough to find, borders has it, but you have to buy it online or place an order and pick it up later at the store. You'll want to read it over and over again, I would reread it but I'm reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms right now.

Battle Royale is an awesome book. The one problem is that its a direct translation (at least the version i read was) so there are some grammatical inconsistencies in the text. once you get used to that though, its a great read. I highly recommend it to pretty much anyone.

I am aware that there is another thread, but I am not asking for the discussion of "which is better". This is a full discussion of the book itself. Also, as a warning for those who are still working on it, there might be SPOILERS
I picked up the book the other day at the airport on my way to New York for Thanksgiving and I've been glued to it, putting it down occasionally due to the graphic descriptions of some of the deaths of the school kids.
There are so many characters and what I love about the book, so far (since I have yet to finish it), is that the characters are all intricate. The relationships they have with each other and how they think, it's all very human. Although I really wish Shogo would shoot Noriko and put her out of her misery. And when I started the book, I kept wondering how the author was going to describe 42 free moving characters, and so far I think he balances it quite well. I'm a huge fan of this book, which leaves me feeling kind of sadistic.
I just finished the part where the Track Runner encounters the top Soccer Player and gouges his eyes out with her nails. Well... more like jams her fingers into his eyes. It was hard reading that part for me. It was really insane to picture a girl jumping on a guy and just shoving her fingers into his eyes until she heard a popping sound... then the ice pick part! *Shivers* The Ice Pick scenes make me shiver.
I hate to think of what I'd do in their shoes. I told my father that I feel like I'd be one of the first to go. Or I'd do a lot of hiding. I know I wouldn't be looking for people I'd trust. I know, I'd probably be out there killing just so I could live. No doubt about it, I doubt I could be like Shuya or those two girls who tried to rally everyone together with the megaphones.
And the weapons! Darts? Forks? Ice Picks? Sickles? What weapon would you hope to end up with? I really hope I get a gun. And ... Can someone explain the "Bolts" to me? I kept picturing lightening... like in the beginning I pictured Yoshio throwing lightening bolts like he was zeus. It kept confusing me.
What do you think of the book? How are you dealing with the descriptions? I can't exactly ask you which character you like most, so, which character, if put in the same position would you identify with? Just talk about the book and your feelings on it. The meanings and ideas in it are pretty straightforward and truly quite political.

Bolts are like arrows for a crossbow.
I read this book in high school after my friend insisted on making me watch the movie. At first I was literally nauseated by all the blood in the movie and the utter viciousness of some of the girls. Especially the lighthouse scene...ugh.
But it did provide some rudimentary insight into Japanese teen culture, which was nice, and I had very little trouble putting faces of people I'd known in middle school to each character. I think if I were in that situation I'd have huge trouble killing someone, but if I ended up doing it one time, after that it might be easier. I'd have to start with someone I hated and I'd be able to survive, except for the fact that I suck at sneaking around. But I'd rather have the collar blow my head off than kill one of my real friends.

Ahhh! Thank you :D That makes it more clear now. I just couldn't picture the weapon very well and it kept throwing me off when someone else would use it or mention the fact that they two were given the same weapon as the fourth kid who died.
The Lighthouse scene? I think I vaguely know of it. Someone I know mentioned it to me the other day and I'm sorted of scared of getting to it. But I'm also looking forward to it.
Oh god! I should try that... Man oh man, that would be so hard to picture who would be who. Part of me feels like I'd be like Noriko, but that's just because I'll last until the end. But I think I wouldn't fall pray to the bully. I'd never trust the bully and probably would take them out as well.
And yes, I'd rather die by the collar as my last resort as well.

The collars are too easy to defeat, if they had been smart, they would be able to avoid killing each other. I mean, they should have been able to break off if those two idiots hadnt been crazy murderers.

I didn't realize the movie was based off of a book. I saw a review for the movie...and I don't ever intend to watch that movie at all. Unnecessary violence just pisses me off to no end. It was a movie about kids killing each other. KIDS. I don't think any of them could have been older than 16. And even if they were older than that, they're still KIDS. I can understand that there's insight into Japanese teen culture, but that could have been been done in a movie (or book) that WASN'T about teenagers killing each other. I'm not saying that movies shouldn't have any sort of violence what so ever, but there IS a limit to it in my opinion. There is a big bold line between the kind of violence that is understandable and could be considered neccessary, and unnecessary violence. The violence in Battle Royale was totally unnecessary in my opinion, and just the brutality of the violence makes me want to puke.

Ah, but that's the point Yaoi. Its supposed to be a brutal look at how desensitized we are to violence and the like. You can't get a point across if you keep it nice and sweet and fluffy, I think. It HAS to be shocking and terrible to get peoples' attentions. How else is one going to gain it otherwise?
Anyways, very enjoyable book. Its been a few years since I read it, but for a time I was all into the Battle Royale scene. It can really get one to thinking.
