I've only read the first one, but I didn't really like it. The world-building was amazing, but the plot was slow and unrealistic and the characters were annoying. I didn't understand why they took their little sister along on this dangerous trip just for the hell of it, when she would of been safer staying in the city. And then, no repercusions. Nothing bad happened as a result of that stupid choice. Not to mention that nothing bad really happens to them in general. I don't like characters who 'can do no wrong'. Still, I suppose it will be worth reading the rest just to finish off the series, and in the hopes that it will improve.

I only read City of Ember, but like Kiralisha said, why did they bring the little sister on such a dangerous journey to the unknowns? She would have been safe staying there in the City.

I loved the overall story idea, but, as said before, there were a few flaws i the plot.I think this story idea could have been taken a lot further than it was.

to those who wondered why she took her sister... Perhaps because they wouldn't want to leave her in a place that they were being chased from? Perhaps she would have been safer, but they didn't know that when they took her did they? I didn't realise there were more books in the series though. I should read them.

I think she took her sister because she wanted to take the one thing most important to her... her sister.
