@Rovannet: Gregory Macguire wrote Wicked after either the original Oz books or the 1939 movie became public domain, which means the creative rights are publicly owned and the materials in the book/movie/whatever are able to be used by anyone. So that's how he is able to use the characters and settings from Baum's story.

And I agree, all the sex scenes were a little bit unnecessary. And I felt the whole romance with Fiyero came completely out of left field. At least he could have insinuated that one of them had feelings towards the other in college or something.

But other than that, I generally like the book. :)

i recently started reading wicked and i am really back and forth about it.

i loved it when i started reading it. melena and ferx and nanny...even turtle heart had such great character and everything was funny with the innuendo and the pun! i died laughing. when the baby elphie part ended i was eager to see what came next but i just couldn't take the college crap.

it bored me to hell! i was soooo bored of it an all....so then i pushed through it to the part with the prince fieyro stuff and i was enthralled again! now elphie is traveling with some boy named liir and they are in a party and it is boring again....is the whole book going to be like this?

Im reading it for the second time, I read it a long while back. I'd have to say I loved it. Maguire's writing style is his own, and his characters are saucy, witty and interesting. Did I enjoy it more before Shiz? Yes. Did the first book leave plot holes? Yes. BUT, if the other books are read the plot holes quickly become filled in. So, as I reread the book Im more clear on what's going on. As a book by itself it is flawed, but Wicked, Son of a Witch, and a Lion amoung men together... well I'd have to say it's one of the best things ever written. These books are the only ones I have ever been able to read more than once.
