The saddest book that I`ve read would probably be Angela`s Ashes. It made me cry alot, because i read it when I was 12 or 13.

Like some others are saying, New Moon and A Corner of the Universe are sad books.
But New Moon had a happy ending, even though the middle was very depressing ;-;

I've read Were the Red Fen Grows too. That book (and movie) is so sad!!! I was in 2nd grade when we read it and was crying ma eyes out.

Also a book called Timeless Love made me cry a bit. Though it was more of a happy/cute crying.

Hmm... it seems that most people here are posting children's books. One really good classic novel that's horribly sad and depressing is The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm sure most of you know the main plot, but I always found it really sad that Mercedes never ended up with Edmond. She regretted her marriage and wanted to return to the Count, but he didn't really forgive her. Then her son leaves so that he can find a job as a sailor to support them and Mercedes pretty much remains alone for the rest of her life. I dunno... that's a pretty sad ending for a character that, in my opinion, didn't do much wrong. She was just caught up in events that she really had no control over.

And then of course, you can't help but feel so much pity and sadness for the Count himself. He was imprisoned for so many years for a crime that he didn't commit. He spent so long wasting away in that horrible prison.

And what's worse, he lost everything that was ever important to him. His fiance was stolen from him by his former best friend. His new, high-paying job as the ship captain was also taken away from him by a greedy friend. Finally, his father passed away due to grief after discovering that his son had been executed (which, of course, was a lie). I dunno... I just really felt bad for him... Edmond lost everything due to the selfishness and greed of those he once called friends.

I think the saddest book I've ever read was a book called "Divine". By: Karen Kingsbury
It's about a girl who grew up surrounded by drugs. She was ten when she last saw her mother because her mother went overdose on drugs.T^T. She was looking for her grandmother, but she got kidnapped my "businessmen" and etc.
Read to find out. ^^

We had to read "A Separate Peace" in 9th grade. All my friends made fun of it, but I cried. I thought it was such a sad book and so beautifully written, too! Does that make me pathetic?

I would have to say my saddest book I've ever read was Luna written by Julie Anne Peters.

Here is a description from the book if you all are interested. If you aren't into this kind of book please don't discriminate.

"Regan's brother, Liam, can't stand the person he is during the day. Like the moon from whom Liam has chosen his female namesake, his true self, Luna, reveals herself only at night. For years, Liam has transformed himself into the beautiful girl he longs to be with help from his sister's cloths and makeup in the secrecy of their basement bedrooms. Now, everything is about to change----Luna is preparing to emerge from her cocoon. But are Liam's family and friends ready to welcome Luna into their lives."

If you are into these kind of books its really emotional and a must read. ^_^

The Ghost of Cutler Creek. It was about a girl name Anne, I think, and she can contact with ghosts. She was a young girl and so was her trusty friend, Dubb. He was about the same age, again, I think, and she finds out that this "Cutler Creek" is now a barn and the person who owns it, has dogs in there, dying, and that have been abused by the owner.
Anne buries the dog, and the dogs leave Anne alone.

I know the name of that book! If I remember correctly, it was called Phoenix Rising, though I can't remember who the author was. And I agree, that was a sad book.

I've never actually cried during a book, but the most recent sad book that I read was The Awakened Mage by Karen Miller. The ending just really made me sad.

@ LilDuckiez: I would agree with that. The Giver by Lois Lowry was one of the saddest books I have ever read, along with some others that I would have to think back to remember the names xD;

There was a book I picked up in elementry called Mustard Seed. At least, I think that was it's title. I havent read it in years but I think I've read it about 4 times. All I can remember is that it's about a girl and her cat. Though, her cat dies half way through the story because she was. . I think chased by some dog and had a heart attack or something.

Made me cry a few times.

Jeepers, I've read a ton of sad books, so it's hard to name one.
Although, the first book that I ever cried about (it still makes me sad!) was Charlotte's Web. I was like, 7 or 8 when I read it and I bawled my eyes out.
Another really really sad one was The Outsiders. It was super good but the ending was sad...
A more adult book that was sad though was Go Ask Alice. It's about a girl who gets involved with drugs and becomes addicted and she sorta tries to stop her downward spiral before it's too late. Read it! :!:

I find the books of Nicholas Sparks really sad. I cried while reading A Walk to Remember and Message in a bottle.. Those are the only ones I've read so far. I bet his other books are just as nice and sad.

Well...Hands Down Jodi Picoult's "My Sister's Keeper".
It truly tugs at your heartstrings. It's about a petridish kid who was born just to give blood and such to her sister who has leukemia. Then, once it gets to a kidney...The sister, Anna, says she is going to sue the parents, seeing as she as a human being does not have to give that kidney up. So she meets a lawyer with an awesome story and everything too. I love that book. IT's a masterpiece to me. Just how it artfully displays emotion so you see everyone's point of view and feel sorry for all of them at least a little bit.

I don't generally read sad books, but a good book with a sad ending is Castaways of the Flying Dutchman.

Where the Red Fern Grows I still have the book. My teacher gave it to me when she saw how hard i cried back when I was 11 years old. Now I'm 14 but yet I still cry as hard as I did back then.

The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue. It didn't make me cry, but it was pretty sad and very well written. It's about a boy that gets taken away by changelings and the changeling boy that takes his place. Both boys are forever haunted by the switch and their origins.

Here's a quick clip:
*
"Why do you like playing with your {doll} babies so much?"
Kivi did not look up from her task, but I could sense she was crying.
"We are practicing," said Blomma, "for when our turn comes along to be changelings. We are practicing to be mothers someday."
"Why are you sad, Kivi?"
She looked at me, the brightness now drained from her eyes. "Because it takes so long."
*
Now go read it!:)
