Well, when I read about Hayao Miyazaki's newest movie *Howl's Moving Castle* being based off an English author's story I decided to read the book before the movie came to America *which was seven months after I read the story*. I did this because usually Miyazaki doesn't base his movies off of other people's stories but he found this author's story so interesting that he decided to make an animated film. I really love his art and animation so I read Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones. >w< I LOVED the book and the movie was also great. Like usual Miyazaki put his own spin on the story but it turned out very well. I have to admit I didn't find it necessary to change Michael's name to Markle but I guess with Asian pronunciation...I dunno but anyways the two endings were very different as well. I enjoyed the one from the book *even though I wish there was more to it* and I loved the more powerful ending Miyazaki put to it. So with this I was pleased with both. ^ ^

For me I always read the book first for some reason. I don't know why but I do, then when I do see the movie and I don't like I get disappointed. My only exception was when I watched the movie Howl's Moving Castle then read the book. I thought it was kinda weird since the book was almost nothing like the movie. But I still really enjoyed both the movie and the novel.

Yes. It all started when I was watching a Harry Potter movie and I kept bugging my cousin with questions. She got irritated and suggested that I read the book. At first, I really didn't want to because the books have a lot of pages and all, but a few months later, I tried reading the Sorcerer's Stone and I got somehow addicted to the story, and I didn't stop until I finished the seventh book.
I've also seen A Walk to Remember, and then read the book. I should have done it the other way around. The book was so nice. |
Umm... one time I read one of Harry Poter books and then see the movie I was so angry, it wasent the same T_T

I saw the movie for Harry Potter before I bothered to read the books. My cousins were reading Harry Potter and my grandmother was shoving them down my throat. If someone tells me all demanding to be like someone else, I tend to reject their ideals...so I ignored the existence of it until my dad bought the movie and I saw it.
It kind of flip-flopped though, since I've read all seven books ages ago, and I only saw the fifth movie recently after it was released on DVD. I'm always more of a book person, so movies aren't my thing, but sometimes I see a movie and it's based off of a book and I didn't realize it. The Last Unicorn for instance - that was actually not a very good book though. o.O; Usually the books are, hands down, far better than the movies. |
I've never seen Golden Compass before, but now I really want to read the book and its trilogy.
I've read the Chronicles of Narnia and I'm looking foward to the next movies. X] |
book --> movie
When I read the Harry Potter series, I wanted to watch the movies. I'm not a movie person or so to speak. I like reading books so I'm more familiar with new books than with new movies. :idea: Besides, books come out first usually, right? :wink: Please read the Harry potter Series because it's very nice.

That's what strangely happened with Van Helsing, saw the movie then got the book. Oh and the Hobbit, saw the movie made tries to read the book, but at times just had a hard time getting through it. I guess its just due to I've seen it, so why read it. I don't get movies where I've read first then saw movie. Though that mainly happened with the Harry Potter stuff and Now Narnia.

it sometimes happens to me. At first saw Lord of the Rings, I really loved it and now I own all these books. More often I read a book and then go to see movie based on this book
|
It was kinda the opposite for me, I read the book and decided not to see the movie ("Perfume") :lol:
|
I'm always scared to read books and then see the movie or vice versa. It seems like they just ruin each other a lot of the time.

Usually I've read the book and decide to watch the movie (which as much people know is generally a bad idea).
In one case though I watched the movie first and loved it so read the book. This was A Time To Kill by John Grisham... they could nearly have been different stories... the book was sooo boring! It's the first time I've preferred the movie over the book. When I found out Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was getting made into a movie I was so excited! Seriously couldn't wait for it to be released... then it was so bad in comparison! Things were to neat and easy... and where was Effie? So disappointed! Most recently I decided to read Chocolat after adoring the movie... I quite like them both. They are different from each other but both are good! The movie is kind of like Chocolat and The lollipop Shoes combined... either way they were both amazing. |
Yes the first time i saw the movie Dune i went straight out the next day and bought the book.
I loved it so much. It explained some of the scenes in the movie that just seemed a bit strange. I was so sad when i finished it i went looking for something else by the same author, and was thrilled to discover that the book Dune was only the first in the series. I have now read 6 books in the Dune saga and am loving it.:heart: |
I do this all the time. Just this weekend I saw Prince Caspian and decided I needed to reread the entire series. I still want to get the for dummies book that goes with the books though, so I started another book instead.
Mostly though, if I want to see the movie, I try to read the book first, otherwise I might not read the book which is always a shame. |
I've given up on seeing movies based on books I've read. They always disapoint me and leave me wanting to chew out all of Hollywood for being so stupid. As for seeing a movie and wanting to read the book it happened with this animated version of Watership Down that scared me as a little kid I found it in my school liabrary and decided to check it out. unfortunatly I had to turn it back in before I could finish it.

I find that if I know the story to something before I see it, I tend to like the movie less. If I go in blissfully unaware of the story, I tend to enjoy the movie more. Because then I don't sit there and compare what they're showing me to what I imagined from the book and pick out what was changed and what was left out, etc. etc. O.o;
My problem is...I LOVE reading and have read a lot of the things that get turned into movies so yeah. @[email protected]; But I've never run out to read a book because of a movie since I tend to prefer the books to the movies...*shrugs* Same thing with games and comic books. If I was a fan of the story then they make a movie of it, I tend to not like the movie as much unless it was done really, really well to stick to the story. T3T; |
If I ever see a movie that I really like and know that it's based off of a book I'll tend to go out of my way to read it. I'm still looking for a copy of Bringing Down the House (it's what 21 was based off of). However, most of the time it happens in the opposite order. I read The Princess Bride and The Phantom of the Opera before I saw any of the old movie versions of them.
Overall I think it's better to see the movie first since the books usually have so many more details in them. It's nice to get a brief overview from the film and then really delve into the plot and characters when you read the book. ;D |
I thought Watership Down was boring x_X
Maybe I should re-read it.. I read it in grade 5 or something... Anyway, I read the Harry Potter series and then watched some of the movies. I would never have watched the movies if it wasn't for the books.. (the actors can't really act that well) And yes, I get Quote:

I read Howl's Moving Castle years before finding out that a movie was going to made for it. But i'll admit I didn't see it just because I read the book, I love Mr. Miyazaki's movies.
Um...most of the books I read, I'll eventually see the movies for. Harry Potter, Eragon, Lord of the Rings, The Thief Lord. I'm definitely seeing Inkheart when it comes out...when is that? I don't like walking into the theater right after I've read the book though. I like waiting a while so I don't remember all the little details, go enjoy the movies, and then read the book again so I can compare. Well anyway, yeah that happens to me all the time. Usually it's read the book, want to see the movie. I can't think of any that went the other way around. |
The same happened to me when I saw Howl's Moving Castle, Stardust and Memoirs of a Geisha. All of the books were really pretty good I thought, there were different things in both of the versions, but how the movie portrayed the stories and in many cases still kept them moving even if something was omitted was cool! also by reading the book I found out more about the background stories of some of the characters that the movies didn't have time for :)

Gosh, I tried to read Lord of the Rings after the movie, and boy was that a mistake... Not to offend the fans out there, which I'm sure I've done already, but the amount of action was intersperced quite too far apart for my liking. Usually, however, I find that watching a movie after reading a book can make you like the movie more than it deserves to be liked. What do I mean? I watched Interview with the Vampire, and Queen of the Damned after I've read the books, and to this day I still have a fondness for these movies despite the nagging inner voice that says they suck. And they do, it's just that I enjoy seeing imagined characters realized on the big screen.
Sometimes it's a disappointment, you know, like a while back with all these movie versions of dragon wars and things like that. But once in a while you get a good fantasy movie, and you're pleasantly immersed in their world which it felt had been just as or perhaps a little better than you imagined. |
Let’s see... I saw the Harry Potter movies because I liked the books so much. I go in to each movie knowing they can't get everything from the book in to 3 hours and I think that's helped me enjoy the movies more.
I saw a Hallmark Channel movie, Pictures of Hollis Woods, and liked it so I decide to pick up the book it was based on. I'm going to start reading it tonight... I really liked the movie version of Howl's Moving Castle but I've never been able to get in to any of Diana Wynne Jones's books. That turned me off to reading Howl's Moving Castle but a friend of mine who also dislikes Jones's writing style said she really enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle. So I think I'll try reading it... Sadly, I've yet to read through Lord of the Rings. I love the movies but as much as I'd like to, I just can't get in to the books. Although it been a good 5 years since I've tried reading them. Who knows, I might enjoy them now that I'm older... So while I love to read and usually find that I like the books more then the movies based off them, I can still enjoy the movies… |
I have a friend who refuses to read the book and then watch the movie or visa verse. Me, I'm not like that. Many times, I'll see a movie and think "Woa, that has to be a good book. I should read that!" This happened with Stardust. Fantastic movie, horrible book. NEVER READ STARDUST!!!
Usually I'm the one who reads the book first and then the movie. Then I'm usually disappointed with the movie, but sometimes I'm surprised. The closest movie/book pair is Holes. It is practically word for word! Another good pair is Lord of the Rings. |
I usually watch the movie first, then read the book.
