Oh yes, I have! My book of this sort was Harry Potter, actually.
I tried to get into the books when I was younger, but I could never force myself to read them. They were dull to me, or else I couldn't get into them.
I had never liked books before.

Then I saw the movie, and wanted to read the books too. My step father bought the set for me, which was only 1-4 at the time, and I read them all in the space of about three months. That's when I first decided that books were cool, and I started to go to my library.

Considering that I'm now an avid reader/book nerd, and that I'm going to be a writer/editor, I can happily say that Harry Potter changed my entire life, all from a single movie.

Now, though, I generally read then watch. My exception is Lord of the Rings, of which I have never managed to get ahold of the first book to read. I have read The Hobbit, though.

I just saw The Other Boleyn Girl, and want my time back. Lucky it was rented on a pass, so I didn't wast money on that garbage. Ughh, everybody warned me, but would I listen...NO. sigh, live and learn. The costumes were nice, but that is the only nice thing to say about it. Every thing, and I mean every thing else blew, and blew hard.

I was really disappointed by it as well. I saw Philippa Gregory in person about a year beforehand and was pumped for the movie when she mentioned it, but it was just really mediocre. I mean, they didn't even bother to mention that Mary's first husband died or go into her second romance. The whole point was that the movie was about Mary, not Anne. If they make another one of her novels into a film I hope the director does a better job of it.

Oh yeaah, i do it all the time!

Like... the Dexter tv show, i've bought all 3 books now xD
Series 2 starts next week, YAY!

i did the same with da vinci code, Memoirs of a geisha, and quite a few Stephen King films. Probably more i can't think of at the moment too.

Im trying to read more now though, so hopefully i'll be reading the books before the films in future xD

I bought all the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books after I saw the movie. They're very good books. I was kind of bummed after reading the books that the movie didn't stick to the books more. They completely left out Lena's sister and Bridget's twin brother.

Yeah i've seen the move "A little princess"<----really sad movie by the way, but it was a book first, and then it was made into a movie. and some people are like the book is WAY better then the movie, cause apparently in the movie they cut some stuff out that was in the book. but sadly i haven't gotten around to fully finish the book! ^^

Stallion Duck 02-09-2009 01:10 AM

Oh wow.
There's been many on my part.
Most of the Stephen King book's I've read.
The Series of Unfortunate Events.
The entire Harry Potter series.
The Dexter series (that one a show, not a movie).

There's many more I just can't think of.

gunned 02-09-2009 07:58 AM

Yeah I read first the books before watching like Matlida, Charlie & the chocolate factory, memoirs of a geisha..

hmm there are a lot more but more recently I watched gossip girl tv series first before the book. Gotta say through the book version is awesome but the show is good too.

I usually read the book before seeing the movie- that way, I have an idea of how the movie will be. The only time I've ever read a book after seeing the movie was in the case of the Princess Diaries series. I saw the movie, liked it, then read the book. Then found out just how Disney massacred it. >_<;.

Almost everytime i read a book and i decide i want to see the movie. That happened with Seven Years of Tibet - and i thought the movie wasn't at all like the book. I was disappointed.
Also Twilight, i read it first and then i wanted to see how they translated it to screen.

The only one time i watched a movie first and then read the book was with 'The horse whisperer'

woopdidoodoo 02-16-2009 11:55 AM

I prefer reading the book before seeing the movie
it helps

Mint Car 02-16-2009 02:15 PM

I always see a movie if I've previously read the book. I rarely like them as much as I think I will but I still always try to see it. I just found out recently that at some point in the eighties they made The Westing Game into a film and now I'm trying to find it.

As for movies seen before I read the book there has only been one. I saw Howl's Moving Castle Long before I read the book. I didn't even know about the series when I saw the movie and I'm glad I didn't. If I had read that book first there is no way I could love that movie the way I do. It is soooo very different.

Twiggy 02-17-2009 07:28 PM

Yes I have!
I always wanted to see Twilight but never had a chance to go to the movies and it wasn't out to rent yet so I decided to read the book. I got bored of the book because I thought it was going to slow but I ended up downloading Twilight on some site and I LOVED it.

Edward is soo cute. ^_^

There have been plenty of instances in which I read a book, enjoy it, and decide to watch the movie if/when one comes out.

This was the case for Eragon, for example.

In other instances I watch a movie, enjoy it, and decide to hunt down the novel(s) on which it was based.

For example, I watched the first two or three Harry Potter movies before I even opened the first book.

Connielass 05-17-2009 04:50 AM

Like most of you, I also prefer reading before seeing.
Um.
The only ones I can think of right now, that I saw the movie before reading the book, include:
The Princess Bride
The Neverending Story
2nd & 3rd LotR
The Duchess
The Bourne trilogy (never was interested in the books. Only reason I saw the movies was because my boyfriend wanted to)
The Notebook
Atonement (again, only because sis wanted to see it)

Um. If there are any others, most likely I'm not even aware that it was a book in the first place.

Violet_Beauregarde91 05-20-2009 03:04 PM

I usually watch the movie first, then I see that the movie was based on a book. I read the book and I usually find that the book and film are equally good.

Michy Lea 05-22-2009 12:54 AM

I prefer seeing the movie first.

Right now, I'm wanting to get my hands on a copy of P.S. I Love You since I totally love the movie. I'm sure the book will be amazing.

Connielass 05-22-2009 04:30 AM

Now I add to the list above: I saw The DaVinci Code on TV today. Still have yet to read the book.
I'm sure I could find it at the library. Question is finding the time to read it.

Iltu 05-22-2009 08:48 PM

I usually like to see the movies of books I like, I usually end up dissapointed... Harry Potter, Eragon, and plenty of others that escape me at the moment! There's plenty of movies based off books I like that I want to see, too. Charlie, whioch is based fof FLowers for Algernon is what come immeditely to mind. <3 I love that booK!

The only movie I've seen where I decided to read the book is Forrest Gump... And I didn't like the book much at all, as much as I love the movie. The movie was WAY better. Forrest was a totally different (and more lovable) character, and the ending was so much more touching. Plus, the whole thing was just generally less outlandish.

Goblin Maiden 06-18-2009 03:50 AM

I watched Howl's Moving Castle before I even knew that there was a book. Then I read the book and I loved it as well as the movie. I think that this is the only time where I'm all, "The book AND the movie are great!" I think it's because they both have their own... personality, flair, what-have-you. The movie doesn't ruin the book, not for me; it sort of expands from it, or something. Acquires new life of its own without immediately falling flat and making a fool out of itself.

Am I making any sense? :P Sorry if I'm not, I'm kind of tired right now!

Sharlai 06-18-2009 04:54 AM

This happens to me a LOT, actually. Both ways.
I saw and loved Memoirs of a Geisha, so I picked up and read the book.
I read and loved Bridge to Terabithia, so I had to go see the movie and keep my fingers crossed they didn't dissect the story into nothingness. (They didn't! yay!)

LOTR made me pick up the books, but nothing could keep me interested in The Hobbit so I set it down eventually and went back to my normal books.

My very favorite book series ever has mild rumors being spread around that someone is looking to make a movie of it. This would send girlish gleeful spasms through me that I might not recover from. And if they screw it up, I might not recover from that either, lol.
I'm a big book fan. I hate movies that rape the stories they're adapted from.

tukel 06-18-2009 04:14 PM

Yes....
This has happened to me just once...
I usually read the books before they get made into a movie..
But I don;y know how I missed Twilight!!!!:o

But still I loved the book even after the movie..
the movie was great..thought it was the best romantic movie after Titanic..
The book lived up to my expectation.

I read the whole series straight in a week.

RubySlippers 06-19-2009 05:33 AM

I prefer to read a book before the movie. My imagination is overactive. Most of the time the book is way better than the movie. I just finished reading My Sister's Keeper and the movie is coming out. I hope it doesn't disappoint. The Harry Potter movies are ok, but nothing like the books. The worst is the Tales of Despereaux. I read that every year to my third graders and this past Christmas my students were so excited that the movie was coming out. They were also very disappointed. It is absolutely nothing like the book. So much is changed. The kids liked the book better.

Gummiebearsour 06-21-2009 12:35 AM

That always happens to me,

Like for instance I watch Gossip Girl so then i decided to read the series once i knew that there was a series

I also like to read the books before the movies just to compare how there different.

Connielass 06-21-2009 03:38 AM

I'm with the "read the book first" crowd.
I'm going to go to the library first chance and read My Sister's Keeper before I go see the movie.
