Just wondering. Or maybe it's really complicated, and there's a TV series involved or something.
That's how it was for me with Watership Down; I watched the series as a kid, so then I decided to read the book, and now I'm trying to find the film from about the seventies. xD
And when/if you do, do you notice a trend? Like... Maybe you watch a lot of movies and then end up bored trying to read the book versions? Read a lot of books and end up frustrated with the omissions in the movies, or maybe poor casting?
Just putting it out there... I didn't see another topic like this, but I didn't look too hard either. So I'm sorry ahead of time if this is a repeat thread! ^^;

Wow, there's Cirque Du Freak movies? *-*
I must see!
I saw the first Harry Potter movie and
then I decided to read the books. :]
I read Eragon and then saw the movie, which sucked.

I did that with V for Vendetta.
Also for Lord of the Rings. I'd sworn I wouldn't read them because I'd hate The Hobbit so much. And then the movies came out, and I just had to. They were wonderful.
The Princess Bride is another favorite. The book is SO much better.
Harry Potter, as well.
I think there was another, but it's left my head right now.

Haha, rock on. I'm a huge Shan Fan too. Heard about the movie.. Jeez, must have been over a year ago now! And, sadly, there isn't much more news today than there was then. D:
I just hope they don't cast everyone all weird and make the people who are supposed to be pretty be all hairy and old and weird looking. D; Especially Evra. If he's ugly, I'm going to lock myself in my room and cry for a few hours. v__v
I wish Darren Shan would say more about it on his site!! It's not fair making us wait like this! xD
And I've only ever seen the movie for the Series of Unfortunate Events books.. It was good, to me, but then I've never read the books so I wouldn't be able to make a comparison. Plus, I just happen to have a rather large crush on Liam Aiken.. So I might be just a little biased. :>
And I get that too, where if I've seen the movie I can't get myself to bother with the book. No matter how many times I try, I can't read the Lord of the Rings, no matter how much I love the movies. xD And it's not a reading level problem, I read Wuthering Heights in grade eight. ^^; I just can't.. Get into it. :/

I think that's why I didn't want to read LotR. I couldn't get into The Hobbit, and I didn't think I could get into them. I must admit, had I not seen the movies (over and over and over) I probably still wouldn't have been able to get into them.

Not yet, Clockwork, but they're apparently on the way! ^^; Let's hope sooner than later. ;D
I didn't even know there was a book version for A Princess Bride. ^^; My mum loves the movie, though I've never really been able to get too much out of it. >.> Maybe I should try reading the book and see if I like it more. *nodnod*
And yeah.. I get stuck with books sometimes, but generally if I keep trying I eventually get to the point where I can read it.. But no such luck with LoTR.. :/ I must have picked the Fellowship up at least fifteen times now.. And the farthest I've gotten is page seventy something. xP
Currently, I'm tackling The Handsmaid's Tale for a school project. That's going sort of well. ^^ Just moves so slowly. >.> Trying to read some other Atwood stuff on the side to get a better feel for her style. I mean, I liked The Penelopiads and Oryx and Crake, sooo... >.>

I haven't read those by Atwood, though I rather liked The Red Tent. I plan to read more, I just haven't gotten around to it. I really should make a list.

The only one I can think of right now where I saw the movie then read the book is for The Princess Bride. And that's because it took me forever to find the book. Then once I did, I was convinced for the longest time that I bought the wrong copy, and I went on a rampage trying to find the unedited version. Not a happy ending, let me tell you.
Usually I make it a point to look at the primary source before I look at secondary. If the book came first, I'll read the book before even thinking about seeing the movie. It's even the same way with Broadway shows. I'm just anal like that, I suppose.

I do that all the time. It depends on what I find first: movie or book, but I'm a total nut to read and watch the same story. Especially if I've grown fond of the movie. The book adds a layer of depth to it then. The other way round doesn't work as often, I have to admit.

i do the opposite. :)
i read the book first then watch the movie.
i've read memoirs of a geisha, and a walk to remember. there were some scenes mentioned in the book that were not shown in the movie.
i like to compare the movie and the book.
when you read the book first, it's like you can create or have your own imagination on how that character looks like. it's very much different when you watch the movie first because you already have the "face" of the character stuck on your mind.

I tend to watch the movie first.
Mainly cause I'm not all about reading...
Like I jsut started reading the Harry Potter books a month ago.
I like them better than the movie...
I tried watching the movie afterwards, and it didn't work out for me.
I couldn't stay focused and I just ended up leaving the living room.

I usually read the book first, like Bridge to Terabithia and even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. :]
Although I watched some movies first. Like the Harry Potter series, I believe. I watched the first movie then started reading the books. Also, Matilda...Lovely book. <3

Yeah, there was a series. But it really deviates from the book and kiddy-fies the whole story. Like... I think Blackberry was a doe.. And a bunch of major parts of the story get either moved around, removed, or really skimmed through. xP
But it's still sort of cute, I guess, and it serves it's purpose as a children's show. *nodnod*
And I loved the movie Matilda! xD I have to read the book someday. >.>

I once watched the movie, Princess Diaries. I really liked it and decided to read the book. This was how I was introduced to one of my favorite authors, Meg Cabot.
What I hate about movies, though, is how they often slaughter the books in the most horrendous ways. Has anyone seen what they did to Ella Enchanted? What about Just Like Heaven? Oh, you did not know that was originally a book? Yup, Just Like Heaven is actually based off of a quite serious book named If Only It Were True (read it, it is very good).
The Da Vinci Code was not so bad. It was much more rushed than the book, but not as horrible as it could have been. I adored the movie The Chronicles of Narnia; The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. They had actually followed the book magnificently with that movie.

It depends on if I know there is a book out there or not. Like with "The Notebook". I never knew there was a book until after I watched the movie.
But there have been times I read the book first and then been disappointed with all the changes they made to it in the movie version.

I've done a little of that.
Like fight club, Interview with a Vampire.
I tried reading the scarlet letter, but homygod! That shit is boring!
Sometimes, if the movie isn't based off of a book, but the creator is an author, I'll go pick find a few of his/her books to read.

Yes, that happened to me twice, I guess...
The first time it was Lord Of The Rings, though it wasn't like I've seen the all 3 movies at first and then read the book.I started reading it right after the first episode came out.
The second book was Perfume:The Story of a Murderer. I liked both: the book and the movie, though they did differ.

I always find that the book is so much better than the movie, but I still try to watch and read a good story. But sometimes if the book is really good I don't want to ruin it if the movie is bad, so if the book is amazing I usually won't watch the movie for it.

Yes. I saw the movie The Notebook. I thought that it was very good, so I decided to borrow the book from the library and read if for myself. Surprisingly, the book was better than the movie. I would really like to read the book A Walk to Remember. I've seen the movie and enjoyed it as well. Both books are by Nicholas Sparks.

Hm, I remember when I got the first Harry Potter book when I was really little. It was when it first came out. I wasn't really interested in it because I thought it looked lame. After watching the movie years later, I thought...hey, why the hell not? So I did. I've liked the books better than the movies ever since. However, I must say that they did a FANTASTIC job on the 5th Harry Potter movie. The book couldn't get any more boring. I'm so happy the movie was more than enjoyable.
