- It depends on how advanced you would like to go; A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare is a fantastic fantasy, but alas it is rather advanced, very short for Shakespeare. Other then that, for less advanced I would reccomend Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry, here is a little discription about it:
"On board the ship Never Land, an orange-haired boy named Peter, the leader of a group of orphaned boys being sent off to work as servants in King Zarboff the Third's court, is puzzled by his shipmate Molly's fantastical story of starstuff, but it inextricably binds him to her. Peter vows to help his new, very pretty friend Molly (a Starcatcher's apprentice) keep a mysterious trunk full of the stuff out of the clutches of the pirate Black Stache, a host of other interested parties, and ultimately King Zarboff the Third."

Does anyone know what that story was called or if it was by Grimm or someone else?

I can't remember who wrote this one but I believe the story is called Blue Beard? he's the guy that kills his wives.

I just loved fairy tales in general when I was little :D ! I don't know if any of you have read Andrew Lang's fairy tale collections. They had one for every color (I think there were twelve in total) and they were chock full of interesting fairy tales you never see anywhere else! Ones from other countries, and little known ones as well as the traditional ones. I borrowed every one the library in our county had, and then the one in the next county too...
I should check out those books and read them again sometime...

I always loved one with a polar bear in it.
It's a Norwegian folk tale and it has two versions... One is called "east of the sun, west of the moon", and the other "Whitebear King Valemon"....
It's very complicated, so I can't really write a summary, but it's very nice...

I like the Alice and Wonderland book. It was way better than the Disney movie.
I also have a thing for the Brothers Grimm books. Not the nice spruced up happy versions of their fairy tails that Americans shell out.

I have yet to read the twisted versions of any fairy tale, but when I was little I was interested in Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. But now the only ones that I love are Beauty and the Beast and this movie that I like to consider as a fairy tale, Labyrinth.

I've got a soft spot for old European fairytale. The kind with trolls and fairies and dark 'happy' endings. I'm currently reading 'The Blue Fairy Book'.
I'm quite fond of Brier Rose, personally. There are a million different versions too.. <3

I'd have to go with Sleeping Beauty. When I was a kid I had a beautiful bound book of it, and the illustrations were just stunning. I loved them to death, and they inspired me as I became older. Plus, I always dreamed of having a prince charming XD

I have a whole book full of Hans Christian Anderson stories and I've read most of them over the years, but that one has always been my absolute favorite <3

I'm actually trying to read and re-read through my Hans Christian Andersen sories i have and Brothers Grimm. Right now the ones i love best are: The Will-o'-the-Wisps Are in town, the Nightengale and the The Wild Swans- i love that story the most :) (all of these are Andersen since i haven't gotten to Grimm yet) and i never really understood why but the Princess and the Pea has a little spot in my heart. I think it's because the idea always facinated me since i'm such a heavy sleeper lol Oh and of course last but not least i love Beauty and the Beast- it makes me cry lol (yeah i don't really know why either lol)

My favourite fairy tale, at least I think it would be considered a fairy tale, is Peter Pan. I often struggle with that whole "I never want to grow up" complex, so it suits me just fine.
Something else that ranks highly for me is Pippi Longstocking. Whether or not you would consider that story a fairy tale is up to your point of view, but some of Pippi's fancies are very like fairy tales.

I can't stand most of the fairytales I've heard or read, they're too... stereotypical? Like they'd always make wolves the bad guy if they were in the story 0~0 Granted I've never read many.
I remember hearing one from Africa, though, that I really liked, but I can't remember what it was called. But I think it was about a rich man-- perhaps I king, I can't recall-- and he had this dance he came up with and he said whoever found out how the dance went they'd get money or something and this one guy found out... or... something like that. I dunno. When I heard it I thought it was awesome, but it would probably be more classified as a folk tale though, but still x3

@Nuru: That would be close enough to fairytale.
Fairytales are all folk tales, just from a specific area (Europe).

Well I haven't read any of the traditional fairy tales but I hope this counts.
I found a book in my school library called Faery Reel. It was a collection of short stories and poems about fairies written by different authors. There were modern ones and historical ones as well as others that were plain ridiculas (like when a fairy died when he got stuck in a peanut butter sandwhich)
My favorite of them was the story of a fairy that inhabitated sand castles. When sandcastles were built a fairy would automatically be created for it and they lived as long as the castle survived. It was a narrative of the fairy that lived in one of these.
It was an awfully sad story because he lives his whole life from when the thing is built until the tide comes in. It was a very well written story.
I hope that counts.

My favorite fairy tale would be Little Mermaid.
Cause I love its different ending. Some of the Little Mermaids that I have read are ended up in tragic where the Little Mermaid herself died cause of her love for the prince. Well of course nothing beats good and happy ending. Its just fun to read a different ending.
