Oh I just thought of it. I think my favorite fairy tales, I haven't read the traditional ones mind you, are the renditions in "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales" It is a wonderful book of fairy tale spoofs that I've loved since I was a kid. I really need to go buy that book.

Yeah, but I like the rarer ones. There's a Grimm's Brothers one called "One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes" that I love. It's about three sister, each having the number of eyes as in the title. Of course, "Two Eyes" looks quite normal, so her sisters hate her and mistreat her the way Cinderella's sisters treated her.

i know the Brother and Sister story although what happens to the sister after childbirth is a little different.
I absolutely adore the Grimm fairy tales so most of my favourites are from there.
Their original Cinderella and Red Riding Hood. The False Princess, the Seven Ravens and the Princess and twelve swans (i can't remember the title of that one) but i love them.
(they freaked my babysitter out  when we made her read them to us (me and brother))

Oh and those mentioned by Taliah above
The Little mermaid is so sweet (Anderson was Danish just like me :D )

I think my favorite fairy tale of all time is "The Rose and the Ring". It was considered a "modern" fairy tale about 100 years ago, but the author who wrote it was a very famous author at the time. (I forget his name now, but he was known for far more literate works.) It's rather obscure, so I doubt anyone here has ever heard of it, sadly. :(

@ OBJECTION - "Snow White and Rose Red" was one of the first fairy tales I ever read. When I first heard about Disney's version of Snow White, I remember being very confused. I was very little, and I kept referencing SW&RR to the person talking about Snow White, and he had no idea what I was talking about! (I think I was about 5 at the time.) My parents didn't really care for Disney animated movies so had never taken us to any of them, so I just didn't know what the other person (an adult) was talking about. (I think he just thought I was crazy...)

@ Dearest - I love "East of the Sun, West of the Moon"! I remember reading that when I was very young, and I loved it. Been a long time since I've read that, although I'm sure I have it in one of my numerous fairy tale books around my house....

Heh. Some of you should read the unabridged Grimm's Fairy Tales book. There are some really funny ones at the end, under the "Incomplete" section. I really liked the one that ends with, "I'd really like to eat one of the children." I have a very dark sense of humor, and when I read that, I laughed so hard tears were rolling down my cheeks and I almost couldn't breathe. :) (It was a woman talking about eating her GRANDCHILDREN! It's sort of like the author forgot they were her grandchildren!)

Amber i know just how you feel, i was a little confused as well when reading Snow White and Rose Red.

I love East of the Sun, West of the Moon it is so cool and it is also very similar (the "monster" turning into a man in the night and sleeping with the heroine then leaving before she wakes, but she finds out and turns to her family who persuade her (weak-minded eh?) to take a candle and see, she drops three drops of wax on the beautiful man she sees in her bed and he leaves and so does all the luxuries in the house) all that is like a similar part of the story of Eros and Pysche.

I love both stories. I even have my own thread for chatting in general discussion on the topic of GREEK gods and goddesses

since i was young I've been a fan of fairy tales. and while I've outgrown the Disney versions i went and sought out some of the original ones. the ones that were passed down through mouth before writing became popular. or going out and finding stories based on fairy tales with a darker and more un-Disney like twist. probably one of my favorites was about a bear who was a shape shifter and could turn into a human at night. but during the day he was cursed to being a bear. falling in love with with a woman. the woman who never saw his face became curious and while she was told to never look upon it she did anyway and cursed the couple never to be together again. I've read other versions and love them all. another i love is the black swan. i dunno why. considering each version of the stories I've read have been tragic endings. wish i could remember the name of the book they were in.

Fairy Tales= good story.
Usually fairy tales have happy endings, princesses and people who live happily ever after, I love stories like that. My favorite was Beauty and the Beast, and I used to dress up as Snow White when I was small :)

I like alice in wonderland but I don't think that's considered a fairy tale...it's been along time sense. I'm all for recommendations.

I love all of the fairy tales. Little Red Ridding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella....Lots of them. Even though I am too old for them I still love them. They never get old no matter how many times I read them. XD

I love fairy tales. They never get old, and can be retold in so many ways to keep them interesting. I especially like how dark some of them can get. My favorites are probably "Sleeping Beauty," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Cinderella."

I'm positively obsessed with fairy tales!

When I was a child, I really loved Rumpelstiltskin, because it revolves around spinning straw into gold, and my surname was Goldstraw, so I liked to think our name came from the fairytale.

But I think my favourite is, and always has been, The Twelve Dancing Princesses.
I love the idea of the princesses putting on their finest gowns, and sneaking out together to meet secret princes and dance all night.
