Well for me its a few things first off it has to be a fantasy. Usually I go for books with a strong female leading character. Last I look at the cover, I know you shouldn't judge by the cover but its just so hard not to :P
|
I typically read the summary on the back of the book and use that to judge whether or not I'll like it. If I'm not sure I'll usually look it up on the internet to see the reviews on it. If it doesn't have a summary and the title catches my eye, I'll either do the same as last stated, or scan through the first chapter. I'm not picky about books though, I'll generally read anything.

Often times the flavour text on the back of the book will get me interested in a book, but most often it comes from reccomendations from friends, or the fact that it is an Author I love a lot. I'll talk a chance on other authors in a genre I like, or peers of authors I like, generally when they are colleuges, you get a pretty good idea of who they are and whether they are a great writer or not.
For example, Neil Gaiman, he's a standup individual and an amazing writer in general, if I'd never read anything by Clive Barker before, and knew that he was a colleuge of Gaiman's (he is) I'd be very willing to give him a chance. It's fun to go to the bookstore and see what catches your eye, but you have to be discerning, cause you could see something like Eragon and be like "hm this is interesting" and take it home only to find out it's complete and utter crap, every plotline and concept stolen from other books and authoers. If I'm unsure about a book, or it's a book I'd like to read and know I don't probably need it in my library, I'll borrow from the public Library, makes life easier. Especially when you get on a kick for a certain topic. Like for me, right now I'm kind of obsessed with theoretical physics, and as much as I'm going to eat up the books right now, 6 months from now I'll probably forget I have it as it will be shoved to the back of my closet, and that's no existance for a book. |
Well, when I'm looking for a book to read usually a title, or cover will catch my eye. Then I'll read the summary, and decide if I'd like to read it. Sometimes I'll just read books by authors I like though, if I'm in one of those kind of moods.
Other times I'll read something, if someone borrowed the book to me. |
I love to read, but mostly I read romance novels. When I was younger I had a hard time finding anything to read until my dad gave me my first couple of romance novels. Now thats mostly what I read.
I'm getting a bit picky about what I read now. Usually its the author or the summary on the back of the books which will help me decide if I want to read that particular book or not. |
What i need in a book before i even open up the first page is a good title. I mean i personally think if the author wants to spend that much time on the book you better believe they better try to think of a good title. Next i usually look at the artwork of the cover. If it is something i have to think about i usually pick it out and read the back. I used to go to the library to get all the books i wanted to read but the minute i got a job i just started to buy them. I have so many books and the great thing is i always have a erge to read them again. . . which doesn't bother me any, I have all the time in the world!

so what makes you want to read a book?
Words...i believe that would be the first thing. j/k if i find the summary interesting, i will take a look at it. is it the cover? or the back ? covers are pretty, but they can change as each book comes into print. covers only work if they are for comic books or something, even then the art can be different from what was presented lol the fact that someone famous wrote it? nope. of course popularity can spark my interest, but to read it because they are well known and there fore always good? no fact that they made or are making the movie? i would read and watch both. for example, i saw the Movie "Blade" first, and didnt even know there was a book till weeks after i saw it, and i really loved the book because it goes into detail. the Script was before the Book i believe, so though the book gives more detail i cant say its more accurate and correct than the movie do you buy books? of course...LOL do you read books from your family library? Have ever done that? yes...lots of times thats why i have a fee to pay >_> which i have not paid in years. |
Hm...I actually don't know; it's a combination of things, really.
First off, the cover has to be appealing; I know the whole "don't judge a book by its cover" ordeal, but really, I'd much rather read a book with pretty cover art than some book with a crappy little doodle that looks like it came out of a 2-year-old's scrap pile. The summary has to be good, too. I mean, if the author can't even write a decent summary, I wouldn't really have high hopes for the rest of the book. D: [And, like 1982.Lolita said, if it's manga, the art and story/plot are very important to me.] And actually...the author doesn't matter as much to me. I mean, I have my preferred and favorite authors, but I won't read a book just because someone famous wrote it; I'd check the above, first. =3 And, like the above, I don't really think of whether or not the book was made into a movie or not; it just doesn't really matter to me. Yes. I buy books; but more often manga than actual books. "Actual books" I can get int he library and there isn't really any incentive for me to buy it, unlike manga, which has awesome art and....awesome art. XD Haha, yes. I've read tons from my local library. In fact, I've probably read at least half of all the books there. @[email protected];;; |
I read books for all sorts of reasons. The cover could catch my attention, or what I read on the back might sound interesting. Sometimes I read books because people have recommended them. Sometimes I'll read a book by one author and like it so much that I'll read their books too.
Most of my sister's books that I read, I read because they are there-literally there, all over the house-and I just want to read. My senior year of high school I went on a reading frenzy. I had two book lists: books that I had read for my english class and books that I read because I wanted to. |
When looking through books, the first thing you see is the spine. Naturally the first thing that will draw you in is the title and/or author's name. Sometimes I look at the front cover to get a general idea of the types of characters that are in it, but I mostly turn to the back cover or inside cover summary.
Most of the books I've read, though, I ended up reading because the schools forced me to read them. I liked very few of the books I was forced to read in school, and I think people are less likely to enjoy something that they are forced to read. I've read a few books after seeing and enjoying movies, a few from stalking an author, a few from recommendations from friends, and a few because they were popular and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I've also gone back and read a few books just to know what people were talking about. There were several books that "everyone" was required to read in school but me, and they talked so glowingly about the books that I felt the need to read them (though I don't think I've liked a single book I came to that way). One of the things that can be a good approach to finding something new to read is looking up one of your favourites online. Then look at the "similar recommended titles" option that most bookstores have on their websites and read descriptions about those recommended books. |
i wish i had a library in my home.
that would be awesome. i look at covers but then i also read the back. if the back sounds lame then i won't read it. i also take recommendations from my sister. don't know how she does it but she always finds the really good books. never boring ones. i also read books from my favorite authors. i buy books. more manga that actual books. i would go to the library but they don't allow my dad there anymore. so i can't find another way to get there. lol |
What usually makes me want to read the book is the plot, first and foremost.
Sometimes I also base it on the author, if it's a new book and I know who the author is I'll pick up their new book because I like their writing. Then I just read the back, the summary and if I like it I'll buy it. Just because I like the author doesn't mean I'll like every book they write. If I don't know who the author is, if it's their first book.. I base it on the back. Though once I based it on the cover, because I thought it looks cool and I read the back and the first couple of pages. I liked it so much that I bought the book and now I'm planning to buy the 3rd book in the series. Sometimes I take recommendations from friends, though my friends don't enjoy the same genre of books that I do. I also go on amazon.com and check out the recommendation they give, sometimes I end up liking them sometimes I don't. My mom doesn't read much so I can't really pick up a book from her collection and read it. I'm starting my own 'library', it's quite fun. :) |
I read a book if I have heard it was good from someone or rather if the cover screams to me. Sometimes the titles are what catch my attention or the amount of dust the book as or has no collected.
|
When I was younger, I used to read all the time.
Now, I have anything BUT time. I mostly read required books for school. |
Often, my sister recommends me books by specific
authors such as Garth Nix. One of his books, "Abahorsen", got me interested in fantasy and into the series. When I choose books I look for an interesting cover. Then, I read the back or inside to see if it would be a nice book to read. At school, with have reading levels depending on a test we took at the beginning of the year, and we are required to read within that ratio. This is stressful because I like to read fifth grade level books but my reading level is 8.0 and above so I'm not allowed to read them. I read the most during summer vacation when I don't have school and I can read whatever I want. |
I am very picky about what books I read. I won’t always read something just because it is popular. It actually took me years to read Harry Potter. I want something different in the books I read. I do not want the typical hero/heroine saves the world or what-have-you, and gets the boy/girl. When I hear a title I think might be good I study it a little first. I google it, read what people have to say, and yes spoil myself a little with the plot, and if it meets my criteria then and only then with I read it. :O
|
I know that we're not to judge a book by its cover, but usually what makes me buy a book is the cover of it. If it's an interesting cover I'll get it.
|
Sometimes the cover or if i have heard people say they like it but both those are seldom. Mostly i do reasurch online and look up publishers read experts on the book and go to review sites to see how they were rated. That how i find the books then i write a list of what months they come out and look at my list in the bookstore to see if the have it and if not ordder it online.

Books!!!
|
You're so lucky to have a library in your own home. I wish I had one. Then it won't be necessary to ask the librarian at my school when they are going to open the library for borrowing books. >.< Or begging my mom to bring to Borders to find a book.
What attracts me to the books usually where the plot takes place and what the characters act like. I was always been picky at what I read. I usually find my favorite books accidently. Haha! >.< |
If the cover or the title catches my eye I'll crack it open and read the little summary on the inside cover. Also if I have a bunch of friends who suggest it I'll give it a try, it just depends on what I think about their taste in books.
|
first and foremost, what got you you to start reading a book??? for me it's all in reading what the books about on the back (ehem even opening the book and pick anywhere in the book in the beginning or at the end i normally if i have a hard time deciding if i want a book or not i just open it to the middle, where most of the good are at lol) i buy books i don't borrow, i'm making my own library lol of manga, some typical novels like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and some interests stuff like magic and astrology and stuff like that, and some hard to notice novels like BattleAxe, just figure out what your interested in and read some info on the books even reading a page of the book, I know when i want to buy a book, if i have read it the info and read the page and i liked it I get all excited and i want to get it home so i can read it that's what i do anyways lol
|
What makes me want to read a book depends on a lot of things, First usually the cover catches my eye, then I read the description of the story in the book, then if it sounds good maybe I'll buy it. I do look for authors that I've read other stuff by. We have a store called 1/2 price books and they have a clearance area with $1.00 paperbacks, I love looking for books there.
|
thats a really good question. what makes you read a book. i guess to me the first thing i see is the title. if the title is unusual i always pick it up look at the cover and then read the blur. if i like it i buy the book and as soon as possible i begin to read.
when i'm relly engaged into a book i sometimes forget to eat, sleep, and do everything else. i usually just finish the book the same day. |
Book covers usually grab my attention. Even if the plot synopsis looks boring or stupid, or there isn't one to be found (I hate that), I might pick up a book because of nice cover art or a catchy title. I think the title is really important.
I don't care if the person writing a book is famous or not, but I do have particular authors I like and will read anything of theirs. ^^ I like movies of books, but the only ones I've seen AND read are the first Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Pride and Prejudice. I think. Well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Yes, of course I buy books, and I've read some of my parents' books, but rarely. My mom likes romance novels and my dad likes westerns, and I like the classics and fantasy. |
