Covers are the main attracting feature, though I picked up some years ago that they don't always reflect the contents...Much to my annoyance.
Then, if the synopsis is appealing, I'll have a quick flick through. If i still like the look of it, I most likely to go for it.

Recommendations are always useful for me too, as I struggle to get into new authors, and genres. If somebody says, 'read this, you might like it' then I usually do, thus leading to buy other books with little hesitation.

Well, when I first go to pick out a book, I usually start in the sections that have my genre that I enjoy the most or am interested in pursuing. Once I have found that place, I just scan the shelves.
The title is the first thing that grabs my attention. I will pick that book up and read the summary. If it sounds decent or interesting, I will more often than not read the first page to see if it further grabs my attention. If after the first page I want to read more, than I will keep the book and continue down the shelves, doing the same thing.

smolder 03-29-2008 10:35 PM

For me it usually depends on the summary and the authors writing style. The cover doesn't really matter much.

I have a huge book wishlist, as well as loads of books in my room that I haven't read yet or have started reading and never finished, so the past few years I've been getting books off of that instead of looking for something new.

My Mom was the one who really got me into reading in the first place. She taught all of her children to read before we even got into Pre - Kindergarden (by the way, whats up with that word? does anyone really know what kindergarden actually means?). My sister and I have always been obsessed with books because of this. Mom used to have to take our books from us and hide them to get us to do our chores. :)

I read a book when the title/cover seems interesting. I also read them when a teacher tells me I have to, but with a few exceptions, I usually end up liking them anyway.

I also read when someone recommends a book to me, because if someone else likes it, there's a greater chance that I will like it too.

Julia Caesar 03-30-2008 09:09 PM

Well it's a combination of things.

Sometimes when I bored it's just a random book that is less boring then the situation.

A cover generally seems to grab my attention, but the title is what makes me read the blurb or inside cover thing. If the title is catchy or seems fantasy filled or is on a subject I enjoy then I will probably read the blurb. Then I'll usually give the book a chance. If the first few pages put me to sleep then it's bye bye bookie.

Dayla 03-31-2008 12:03 AM

Book covers usually get my attention, then I read the back. If it sounds interesting, I'll take a look inside. The things I look for are characters that I like (they don't have to be likeable) and a good, interesting ending. If I don't like the ending, usually I don't like the book, so I usually use that to judge. Books that prominently feature animals, I'm more picky about. If the animal is going to die, I'm not going to read it, no matter how good it sounds.

Cloud of Dawn 03-31-2008 07:57 PM

Choosing a book to read is a fairly hard thing for me to do, especially if I want a specific genre or if there's a wide selection. I normally look at the cover first...just since it seems to appear first. Then the title, something not so plain perhaps. Then I read the back or, in some cases, the inside cover. If I'm not certain about it, I read the table of contents...to figure out the happenings in the book. And I might just flip to a random page and read it to see the author's style of writing.

The ritual of book choosing >D

xXxKuroxXxNazoxXx 03-31-2008 09:22 PM

For me to want to read a book I have to have an idea of the story line first, like the book I'm reading now is Invisible Monster by Chuck Palahniuk its about a girl who was in a car accident and now is so disfigured and unable to speak that no one no longer notices her. I guess I could say if the book is something that is somewhat disturbing and dark in its own way I'd want to read it.

Peacemaker 04-01-2008 02:34 AM

Books really have to grab my attention and hold it. If I read a few lines and I'm still not into it, there isn't much of a chance of me continuing to read.

friarlynn 04-01-2008 04:08 AM

My favorite subject: books. I love books. Fiction or non-fiction. Either is great to me. I have created my own mini library, since neither of my parents are big readers. Actually when it comes to readers in my family, it is just me and my older brother who are very interested in books and reading as many things as possible. I choose any book I read for many different reasons.

1) The cover looks pretty.
2) The synopsis on the back of the cover or on the inside flap seems interesting.
3) Someone told me about the book ahead of time and said it was great.
4) Someone told me about the book and said they did not like it, but that I might like it.
5) The first page seems interesting or the fiftieth page seems intersting. The fiftieth page comes from that the first page is not always interesting or even the tenth page that very interesting. So if the first ten pages don't seem that interesting to me, but the fiftieth page seems interesting to me then I read the book.
6) If I have read another book by the same author that I liked, I will choose another bokk that author has written.

Those are my main ways of choosing which book I would like to read or buy to read later. But then there are sometimes when I pick up a book that I have never heard of and without reading anything on the cover will read the book to the last page. I have found some very good books that way. It is definitely an interesting way to learn about the style and context of the book and to learn about a new author.

Harrison Sumner 04-01-2008 08:51 AM

Well I usually read the synopsis of the story at the back of the book and then the prologue and first two chapters. If the story seems interesting and the book isn't boring and tedious to read I would continue to read it.

Anytime I enjoyed reading a previous book by an author I'll keep a lookout for any other books by said author. But this is not very useful since sometimes an author will write a good book then the next book they write is boring.

If it is a Star Trek or Star Wars book and the story have all or most of my favorite characters in it then I would buy the book.

Whenever I read an interesting book that is a part of a series I will find and read the other books in the series as well.

Nightshade1988 04-03-2008 03:02 AM

Covers, flaps, excerpts, word of mouth, reviews. I try not to get into "hype".

Sprinkled Eggs 04-03-2008 04:56 PM

so what makes you want to read a book?
Its usually the cover and the maybe like recommendations from a manga magzine's I read like the free one from tokyo pop. Same goes for non manga books too but also its the title that reels me in.
the fact that someone famous wrote it?
Nope. I like reading mangas from up and coming artists and such.
fact that they made or are making the movie?
I like reading the book frist before watching the movie to see if that added anything or cut anything out.
do you buy books?
Yes. I use them as a reference when i draw. But lateltly i have been reading them at book stores like bordors.
do you read books from your family library? Have ever done that? Uhhh no. All the books in my home is either cook books or old magazines my mom has kept over the years.

Sho-Shonojo 04-16-2008 09:58 PM

Well when I'm walking in the book store it's usually the cover that gets my attention, or the title. If they interest me enough I'll usually pick it up and read the back or the inside cover. If it still interests me I'll start reading the first chapter or a random part in the book and see if I can easily get into it. If I can I usually decide to read it. Or I just by sequels to books I already have, that's most of what I've got on my bookshelf. XD

Sasha1985 04-17-2008 10:08 PM

Well ive always read because it takes me away and collects my thoughts into one place cause othewise they are scatterd its a big realief for my brain to be thinking of just one thing not a billion at once.

[Princess of Tennis] 04-20-2008 05:51 AM

for me, its the summary. if the summary is good, then i decide to give it a chance. so then i start reading the first paragraph. if i like it, then i continue reading. i LOVE romance books. romeo and juliet was truly awesome. we had to read it for an assignment in our english class, and at first i thought that it was boring and sucked. but then, i had spare time and since i kinda skimmed to read romeo and juliet, i felt guilty about having to actually lie to my teacher. so...i ended up reading the book and i thought that it was really good. took me a while to read it cause you know how they used to talk. its way different from how we talk now. in fact, i dont know anybody that talks like that. other genres of books i love/like are comedy, mystery and...MANGA!! hehe sorry for my rant ^^;;

nenalee 06-10-2008 03:04 PM

What catche my attention about a book is the cover or if it catches my attention in the first pages.

Ocarina 06-17-2008 10:52 PM

At first, the title grabs my attention. Then, I turn to read the blurb in the hopes that it's something I'll like. I don't like to read sappy stories about teenage girls going through tough times and change, but if there's a fantasy/sci-fi twist to it, I just might read it.
The overall story line has to draw me in. If I don't want to walk the journey with the characters, there's no hope for my interest.
Ooh, I forgot to mention that if the book is a generic vampire/werewolf book, I'm almost sure to put it down unless someone has specifically recommended the book.

Stormy1 06-19-2008 04:13 AM

Before buying a book I first go to the library and read it there to make sure that I actually like it. I do judge books by the cover, if its flashy and catches my attention I pick it up. I think read the inside flap of it and if that interests me I open to a random page and read a part out of it, thats the only way I find books that I like. Otherwise, if someone tells me about a book and says to read it I will. That or if its by a author I love I will go out and get it as soon as I can.

bobfredgeorge05 06-25-2008 03:55 PM

It would be awesome if we had our own library. I do have a library down the street and I make a trip weekly. I pick a book by its summary on the back or in the jacket. Sometimes I read books recommended by friends. I like to get books at the library that I saw at a bookstore and couldn't afford.

chainsawed 06-25-2008 09:38 PM

Honestly? The cover (and sometimes the back cover of course). I know everyone and there dog says "don't judge a book by its cover" but if you are looking at hundreds of books and you don't want to skim though every book on th shelf you don't really have anything else to go by. It's usually the cover that gets my attention and the back cover that keeps it there.

I also keep my eyes peeled for my favorite authors. But graphic novels usually get my attention first.

stardust33 06-26-2008 12:21 AM

I wished I had my own library :P but for now i just have to use the library
anyways I usually pick my books based on author. Anyways my way of finding a good author varies but usually my friends recommend and let me borrow really good books :P Thats my main source of finding god books. However if i'm in the library looking for a book I usually first look at the covers and then read the back but most of the time I usually browse books online and just order it from the library. The reason being that most of the books at the library are not to my liking or the good books aren't there because people have checked them out. Anyways thats just my way of finding what I wan't to read;)

Kieran Haines 06-26-2008 05:24 AM

What makes me read is the cover, and the story synoposis.
I won't read a story if it doesn't grab my attention. So I got to say, I do sort of judge a book by it's cover. But a pretty book without a good story will only be pretty. : P

And I don't have my own library. That'd be awesome if I did though. That way I wouldn't have to keep visiting the library. XD

Branwen Melanthe 06-26-2008 03:59 PM

What makes me read a book in the cover, title, and where it is at. Once I evaluate all of these things I read what the book is about. Sometimes I will skim through pages or sit down and read the first few pages.

Other things that make me read a book are reviews I've seen online in threads or my friends reading the book.

If I see a movie I will try to find a book that started it and read it. In most cases however, I read books and three months later they make a movie, it always happens. I haven't even heard of the movie when I read the book, and all of the sudden I'm giving stuff away to classmates about the movie. I've read Twilight, I Am Legend, and Blood or Chocolate; Only three books I've read that are being or have been made into movies.

I own a small library myself, but I've read all of the books from it accept for a few. I usually go to the public library, check out what's new, look over the shelves, then pick a book at random if nothing catches my eye and I read the story a bit. That was how I found Vampirates, and it is one of my favorite series as of the moment. I need to go out and buy some more books soon.

Atlene 06-30-2008 03:49 AM

Well, don't judge a book by its cover does not apply to me [sort of]. What cath my eye is the cover. If the cover looks interesting I will proceed to read the summary, maybe flip through th first few pages to seee if the book is any good. I really love books with pretty covers, I don't know why. Ooh, and titles that have no connection to the book what-so-ever. I think those are especially awesome for no particular reason at all.

The books I usually read are n made into movies because they simply aren't huge enough. And authors, I tend to pick authors I know since I know their quality and style of work. Not the case in sometimes, as I do like to find new authors I can read.

It also depends on the genre. I would mos likely choose a horror genre novel over a, per se, adventure or romance. Genre is very important for me when it comes to reading. I don't like the typical teenage romance novel so I tend to stray away from those.
