Ooh! I'm so glad I found this thread. Right now, I'm currently working on writing my own book. I won't go into details, as I'm still slightly shy about having anyone else see it, but I will tell you that there is an insane amount of research and note-writing to do. I thought it'd be simple to just put my ideas into words, but I'm finding myself researching heaps of different things, ranging from mythical creatures, to the differences in magic between different cultures, to what different words mean in different languages and so much more. It's so darn enjoyable though. ^^ I've got two notebooks already full of notes and research, I'm halfway or so through my third. =D I find that it's hard to come up with a title though. I'll probably find something when it's finished. =3 |
I know that I have the creativity to be an author...I just have to stop being lazy and start actually writing. Haha. But yeah, I have a lot of ideas for my own books. If I were to ever finish one, it would be a post-apocolyptic battle between an Athiest boy, who tag-teams with God to fight a battle with Satan. Oh yeahh and...God happens to start out as a 11-yr-old Porte Rican girl. I really want to finish writing it and get it published. |
I would love to, but it takes so much work... I'm more of an artist than a writer... I have worked on two different books, but they never really went anywhere... One was a vampire book and one was about a fictional band...
|
I have about thirty books that I want to finish all in various stages of completion, and I doubt I'll ever finish any of them. But it's nice to dream.
|
I am going to be an author when I grow up. I dont necessarily want to be really famous, but a little bit of acknowledgment wont hurt.
|
I would love to write a romance novel. But I know I couldn't. But i've read so many good and interesting ones. That it makes me want to use what I know to make one of my own. Cause there are so many out there. I'm afraid i'd just get lost in the mass of them. Lol. But it would be interesting.

: oh of course :3, that's why I am taking a professional writing course <3 :
|
I'm pursuing creative writing when I'm in college, but I'm doubling my major with another 4 year course. Maybe pre-law since I want to be a lawyer too. I would love to write mystery, but I'm a fantasy/romance writer at best. I'm working on a novel now, I had three chapters finished, but I'm restarting my novel.

I do! I have so many ideas for so many different books, and they just keep swimming in my head, never letting me forget about them. I've actually finished the rough rough draft for the first book of the first set of books, that's supposed to be about three sets, and have the first 10 chapters of the second book (but I want to go back and completely redo them, so they don't count). The first set has two books, the second set will have anywhere from 3 to 5 books, while I have no clue about the third set. *shrug* The first set is set in the past, in the alternate reality, while the second set is in a modern day kind of setting, with some differences, It's an alternate reality, what do you expect. *laughs* And the third set it in the future-ish kind of thing. I have most of it planned out, I just have to find out the wording and the order of events and some things like that.
Anyway, I have another series of books that is in the process of being worked out (mostly in my head but also being written out in various scenes). I don't know how many books it will be, but I'm working on it. :P Anyway, I do plan on being a writer someday. I don't care if I'm famous or not, I just want my stories out there to be read by others if they want to read them. |
I actually would like a side job as a novelist when I settle into my career (being and English teacher in Japan!). I have a couple of ideas for books, well one idea is going to be a stand alone book, probably the first thing I get published. Then the second would have a sequel (which ironically enough I got from a homework assignment in 10th grade where we had to write a short story... mine ended up becoming a novel with just the first chapter ) I also have an idea for a story that I think I'll turn into a series, not quite sure though... I don't expect to get rich and famous off of these, I just write for fun, but if I do then that's cool.

I've written lengthy works of fiction. Nothing particularly great, but still it's fun to do.
|
I have thought of writing before.
I use to write all the time but have stopped but would really like to start again. I am thinking about participating in the National Novel Writing Month which starts tomorrow actually. I find the idea of it great. Having to write super fast so that you can't think very much on what you are writing. I don't think anything I write will ever be sold or even be sold by many people but I think it will still be fun. |
Yeah, a lot of people talk about writing for NaNoWriMo.
|
I have a book i'm writing, about a girl who was raised by a gypsy family. It takes place in a weird fantasy world and all that. I want to finish it by the time i gradute from college, which is only a couple of years away, so i'd better get cracking.
I'm not doing it to win an award or to get rich or anything like that, even though that would be cool. I mostly want to accomplish something as soon as i graduate and get out into the real world and find a job, etc. |
I have tried writing a book , once or twice anyway. But later when I read over it , I thought that my ideas were stupid and didn't make sense. So then I quit and my ideas ended up in the trash can with all the other garbage. Later, I thought about my ideas over and over, and I regret what I did. I doubt that I will ever be able to write (or try to write) a book again. But you never know. ;)
|
Yes, I do. But I don't think my writing skills are that good, and I'm absolutely positive that my book will never, ever get published. There are way better writers out there.
|
Writing is a craft, not an art. The way to get better is to practice, practice, practice! Read books you like, and instead of just reading them, analyze them! How does the author do what she does? How does she construct sentences, how does she build characters, the world, etc.
Then apply those techniques to your own writing. First, just write. Don't let yourself judge the quality, just write it. For this pass, I most often use a pen and a notebook. Get the words out of your head and down on paper. Once you've done that, and the story is out, set it aside for a while. Go back later and look at it with fresh eyes. What works? What doesn't? What can you cut, and what do you need to add? If you find yourself wondering if this process works, you can take a look at my "The Delicate Art of the Sword" topic in the Literature forum. It's a first draft, but I think it shows my years of practice as a fiction writer. And remember... every published writer has a stack of unpublished work in their desk drawer from before they broke through! |

While I agree, I also disagree. Writing is as much an art as it is a craft. The actual mechanics of writing, I'm speaking prose, are craft. But what is actually written is as much art as it is craft. I'm not saying you shouldn't practice, on the contrary practice as much as as often as you can. I've been trying to write a book for a few year now, I keep hitting a brick wall and have to change a component. Mostly the point of view that the story is told in. I have finally figured that out, and am very satisfied with the progress of the story. |
Well for my English class, we're required this year to start on a novel. I rather like doing it, but I get stuck so often.
|
I'm writing a trilogy in my spare time. I figure once I get the first one done, I'll send it to a few publishers and see if anyone bites...if not...it'll end up on the interwebs.
|
I'm told that the slush pile (unsolicited manuscripts) at a publisher is not really the way to go with getting published. You should find an agent who represents the kind of writing you do, and send it to their slush pile.
|
I've actually written a BUNCH of stories [A LOT of notebooks filled with them] that could be worth a whole book! I do get stuck at some points, but I love to write. I don't want to become one of those writers, though. Not that much. Even if I love to write. :D [WELL MAYBE...We'll see]
And I don't think I'd be famous and win a lot of awards. Hey, probably just a couple hundred fans but that's all...I think. All my stories vary in genre from mystery to romance to humor! I do think of it as a job that I might do someday! |
I'm going to major in English (I'm currently at the University of Minnesota but will transfer to the University of Toronto for my final two years) with the plan of one day working as an editor at a major publishing company or as an editor for the Onion (the mock newspaper/news site, I highly suggest checking it out--it's hilarious). I've always had this dream that's lingered in the back of my brain, however: becoming one of the writers I've idolized for my entire reading-life (meaning: ever since I learned to read). I used to be in a writing club in high school and was praised for every story I shared (and even before that, teachers would adore my stories in creative writing classes) so I've got a tiny voice that's constantly whispering to me, "Yes, do it, you'll be good..." but that could be my ego in the guise of confidence.
Anyway, I have ideas for books and graphic novels but no time to flesh them out, nor do I have the confidence to actually seek out any publishing companies were I to actually complete a manuscript. The dream and the ideas are there, but the confidence and time to do so are not. One day I hope to have both and write something, even if it sells no copies but the ones my friends and family buy out of pity. This is a lifelong dream and one day I will fulfill it. |
I once attempted to write a novel for NaNoWriMo. When I was writing it, I thought it wasn't that bad. I even thought that I could try and have it published. But I never finished, and now I see that it was crappy. So, no, I wouldn't want to write a book, I'm simply not a book writer. I'm good at writing very short stories and poems. I also wanted to publish a book with my poems and stories, I'd call it "Dreams"...But I won't. I don't want to anymore. Publishing my stuff online is enough. Hardly anyone reads it anyway. :P
|
I definitely would like to write a novel someday. I've started over 30 and one novella.
I write because I think it's relaxing and it's a good way to let off some steam. It'd be cool to be famous for my writing or win a few awards, and I think I might be able to do it. What I really want to do is finish my novella and make a movie out of it. |
