I'm curious to see how many of you have read her books.
I'm a huge fan of her and have read all but Northanger Alley.

The book I least like would probrably be Persuasion.

My favorite is dived between Pride and Prejudice and Emma.

What are your favorites?

I've read her three main classics, yo know - Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma. I did however, LOVE all three of them.

I also watched the movies of those books, and the new movie "Becoming Jane". I thought they were decent, but I liked the books better.

I read Pride and Prejudice, no offense but it was boring to me. That's my opinion, though. I've seen the "Emma" movie, it was pretty good. I kind of prefer modern books though, no idea why. 'Tis a mystery.

Well.. I guess I'm more of a classics kind of gal. I love all the old british things.
Which is why I like Harry Potter so much. ^.^'
Alixis, I also watched the movie for Pride and Prejudice, but the BBC version. I dont care to watch the newer one, since they had to cut much out to fit the story into one hour.
But I do wish to see Becoming Jane...

It was interesting, but i still liked the book movies better.

I agree with you about the Older Vs. Newer pride prejudice movies. The older was so much better.

P.S. - I LOVE the Harry Potter books.

Perhaps its because you read the book before you watched the movie?
I watched the movie before I read the book, so the book made allot more sense.

Of Jane Austen's works, I have only read Pride and Prejudice. ^^ I love how it puts an interesting twist on how people interact when in love and out of love. :)
I have not seen any of the movies, though...are they as good as the novels?

I'm not a fan of hers. Her writing is too... pretentious. I'm more of a fan of the Bronte sisters.

Funny, I've never read the Bronte sisters.
Mind revealing some of her works, and why you like them?

I've wanted to read northanger abbey, its the last book of her's I haven't read..
But I can't seem to find it anywhere. What is it about? Without any spoilers, please.

Most people love Pride and Prejudice, its her best peice of work, I believe. Emma was nerve recking for me. I loved Emma, but at the same time I felt frustrated with her. I didn't know much about English Customs, but even I could tell some of the things she did were a bit... "pretentious."

I'm currently reading Emma. Emma herself, I cannot stomach-- although I do believe that Austen creates a compelling host of characters. I love Mr. Knightly, for example.

I've never been an especial fan of Jane Austen, however. I dislike her narrative style, even when I find her characters interesting. She tends to introduce characters by giving a laundry list of their characteristics, interaction styles included, rather than letting the the actions of those characters speak for themselves.

I like to discover characters for myself. Once I get past the introductions of her novels, I can make peace with the slightly more florid style of Austen's writing.

I have to admit, though: despite the fact that I find her classist ramblings highly frustrating, Emma's personality entertains me.

Every great author has his/her ups and downs. And I will admit, I also find her introductions a bit tough to get through... it will take me two to three days to get through it, just because I'll become bored and thus easily distracted...
But once I have done away with it, there's a sense of Drama and Urgency that makes you compelled to read onwards.
There were times when I myself was very frustrated with Emma.. but she's like the preppy pretty girl in our day of age. She's not necessarily mean, but she just believes herself to be right all the time.
Mr. Knightly is my ♥ as well... he's a heart throb. So kind.
And you'll love him even more towards the end.

I've been meaning to read her, because I greatly enjoy the movies based on her books. I actually have heaps of her books on my shelf, but then my to read list is huge lol. Worth reading do you say? Shall I put her ahead of other authors?

honestly, I've only read Pride and Prejudice, and that was for school and I read it under a time crunch so I didn't get the whole experience. but looking back, it was a really good book! I'm going to have to read it at my usual speed but I really enjoy the author's style of writing!!

oh and thank you for listing your favorites, I'll definatley check out those other books of hers as well.

I've only read Pride and Prejudice.
At times, I found it a bit difficult to focus on it. While they speak differently than we do, it's not hard to figure out what they're saying at all. But still, it takes more focus than a more modern book. So I could only read bits of it at a time.
But I really enjoyed it. And I plan on reading some more of her works. ^^
Though it may be a bit before I get to it. I've got four books waiting to be read, and one in the mail.

I wish I could say that I liked any of her works, because I normally LOVE old European novels, but her works are an exception. >_<;. I tried to read Pride and Prejudice(after hearing so many wonderful things about it), but I couldn't make it past page 20. It just dragged on SO much. :(. I'll give it another try eventually, but for now, I'm going to avoid it. I think I'll try a different book of hers first, though, just so that I don't go into reading it again with my current mindset.

I've found that Austen tends to drag on the beginning of most of her novels. She usually introduces the economic background of all the different characters and brings in a bunch of side ones with wordy explanations. Once you get past that first phase her novels are incredible. I think you should pick it up again and tell yourself to give it fifty or so pages. If you still dislike it then maybe Austen just wasn't meant for you. Personally, I thought Mr. Darcy was more than worth any trudging from the first few chapters. ;D

More ontopic, I'm reading Northanger Abbey right now and I adore it. It's really satirical and is strikingly different from everything else that I've read by her.

Pride and Prejudice is probably my favorite. Me and my one friend argue over Mr. Darcy, especially after seeing the A&E version. It is, in my opinion, the very best film rendition of the story.

I LOVE Jane Austen's books! I have only read her Pride and prejudice and Sense and sensibility though.
What lead me to read her books was the movie of Pride and prejudice with Keira Knightley. I thought it would be a good book since I liked the movie... and guess what, it was an excellent book!
I read it in my native language and I read Sense and sensibility in English shortened version.

I adore all of the Jane Austen books and have read them several times. If I had to choose one fave, I guess it would be Pride and Prejudice. :)

So I have recently bought Emma to listen to on the I pod, and was wondering, is Emma the same story as Clueless? Clueless is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I have been wanting to read the book it is based on, but can not for the life of me remember what it is.

Also if it is Emma cold some kind soul please tell me how is who?

Thank you kindly.

amy: A quick look at the Wikipedia article for the movie tells me that the story was loosely based on Emma. ^^

Yup! As far as I could tell it was loosely based off the plot of Emma (however, I don't want to give away any spoilers since 80 percent of the fun of reading a book is finding out what happens next) and Emma's character. Even by just reading the first chapter you could definitely tell how self centered and 'clueless' Emma is to the world around her, just like Cher. It's a fun change seeing Austen make fun of her own character rather than the usual admiration she has, like with Elizabeth Bennet.
