When I read a book I tend to give it away after i am done with it. Often I do this by just leaving it in a publice place. I learned this from my mother, and it really does save space.
That is not to say I don't keep some books, just not many. They are expensive, they ought to be read more than once.
However this christmas, I got an EREADER, by sony. think Ipod for books, not the books are cheaper and I don't have tons of books laying around. The only sad thing is that my friends, who I give books to can't get them in digital form.
So guys what do you do? Read and release? Or read and shelve?

I do both. I keep all my favorites, and usually give the books i'll onl read once to a charity or donate to a library. I get books used, anyways, so it's not THAT expensive.
An E-Book? I've been looking everywhere for one of those, but they're so expensive...

Yes they are, but you will save money on the books that you buy. That was the angle I used tO justify getting it. And it is true, most books are 20 to 50 percent off, but I have gotten a few for 80 percent off.
Plus mine came with all these yummie free books and a 50 dollar off your first purchese code. So the price was knocked way down.
The one down side is that there are a lot of books not yet on the store that caters to my reader, so I have to wait to get the book, or the book is old enough I need to buy it in paper.
But all in all it rocks.

I tend to be very picky with my books, so I usually only keep the ones that I enjoyed or could actually read again.
I like to sell them back, so that I can get some money in return and maybe buy more books that appeal to me. But generally I either keep them or give them away.

When it comes to adding books to my library, I only add it if I like it, I don't give books much, unless I really like it and think others would enjoy it too, which isn't that often. I read and shelve mostly.

I'm not ashamed to say a large portion of my books have come from charity shops, so I'm grateful if people have given away books they no longer wish to keep. I tend to keep all of my books until I don't have anywhere to put the new ones! When I was younger I used to give my books to my primary school but now if my friends don't want any they just go back to the charity shops.
I would love an e-reader too, but I live in the UK and they haven't really been launched here yet.

I read and shelf.
I love books! I want a large library full of books!
I love to read, and re-read them, over and over again.
I love the new book smell, the old book smell, and just the smell of books themselves! ^_^

I usually keep all of my books.
Or sell them, and a few I've given to friends that I knew would enjoy them more than I did.
I never heard of a soley e-book device, but if they get a bigger selection I might look into it.

I usually read and shelve only to reread later on. I do give away some books mostly school assigned books to the local library, and used text books.

If I read a book and like it, then it's mine forever! If I read a book (or start to read a book) and don't like it, then it gets passed on. I never give away a book I enjoy, because I tend to read things several times, or will want to at some point in the future. Sometimes you can leave a book for a few months, or even years, then go back and read it again and rediscover why you enjoyed it so much in the first place! And some books are so wonderful, they never lose their charm, no matter how many times you read them.

I am a huge reader & I have to say that if I saved all the books I read I would have to buy a house or storage unit just to keep them all! I also have a daughter whom is a huge reader and although she finds it hard to give up her books... I have found a local store here where you can trade them in for more. It is called the Book Exchange... 95% of our books come from there... The other 5% come from a the paperbackswap.com... I have trade a lot of books on that site... It is where you list the books you are looking to get rid of & make a list of the ones you would like to get.
You only pay shipping charges for the ones you send out to others. The shipping is usually between $2.18 & 6.00 depending on the books. However most paperbacks are the $2.18. You can set your preferences in the site that you would not like to receive books from smokers or people whom have a lot of animals. None of the books I have every received we in a poor condition. Well I do not receive books from smokers people whom have a lot of cats or libraries.
I have been a member of that site for about two years now & I have saves a whole lot of money on the books...
I use the same user name on there as here... so look me up when you join! Oh yeah... and it is free to join there too!

i read and keep.
only because i have 3 sisters.
and they could also read.
Plus when the shelve gets full we go
through all the books. If there are
ones that we don't want anymore,
we put in a box and give them to
charity or the good will or
something.

Another greedy reader, here.
When I read a book, and like it, then I keep it around so I can read it again. If I read a book and don't like it, I often don't finish it, so it goes on the shelf because I keep telling myself to give it a second chance. :)

I usually keep my books, but I like the idea of leaving them sitting around for anyone to pick up. If I like it enough to buy it, though, I'll probably read the book again.

I pretty much always keep my books after I read them. I usually end up reading them again sometime so it's not like they don't get used. and I let my friend borrow them when she doesn't have books to read. I'm starting a book collection now so yea. x3

I keep my books. Some just because I think my brother and sister would like when there older. Others because I didn't like them at first but want to try rereading them later to see if I'll like them later; and others since I liked them a lot and might want to reread them later on if I forget what happened.

I keep nearly every book I buy- I started to actually collect books last year, and my collection's grown considerably since then. :). I only get rid of them if I didn't like a book, or I KNOW I'm never going to read it- which isn't that often. :). Right now, I think I have over 35 books- and that's not counting manga. I'm not even sure how many manga I have now- all I know it's enough to full two shelves, stacked. And I still have four stacks in my closet. I probably have over 100, but I'm not entirely sure. ^^;.

i keep every book that comes my way- i haven't even read a third of what i own. But i love books so much, it pains me to think of getting rid of them. If i love a book enough i will buy my friends their own copies lol i own over four hundred right now (over seven hundred including my manga (but excluding my comic books b/c they are in storage)) and i know that if anything happened to them i would break. Sad but true. I have no problem lending them out to people, sharing the reading, but i really have issues when it comes to parting with it forever.
On the same kind of note- i'm not good with libraries since i don't take books back willingly lol so i buy everything now
