I don't think Naruto pities her, at all. I mean, if he did, he wouldn't have inspired her. Neji, her parents, her team-mates, Kurenai...I'd say all of them pity her, or did pity her. I think the reason Naruto inspires her is because he doesn't require pity, and he doesn't give out pity.
I also don't think Naruto/Hinata is that far-fetched. I don't really think Naruto thinks he has a chance with Sakura...and even if he did, I don't see their relationship as romantic at this point. Besides, Naruto is rather dense. I think if he finally realized that Hinata loved him, he' might re-evaluate his own feelings and consider hers. He's always been fond of her, as far as I could see.
It might be the fan in me speaking, but I'm hoping Hinata doesn't die. Otherwise her death scene seems pretty fake to me. (It just doesn't feel right).
EDIT: In fact, when I saw that scene, I didn't even think of death, whereas with Kakashi's, I was like: "Damn. He's gone then. >.> "
