It depends. In some manga that I really like, my favorite character is the cutsey nice little kiddie who ends up going crazy.
This does not include Sasuke from Naruto.
I hate Sasuke.
Granted, I don't like the perfect heros either.
Ex: In Cantarella, my favorite character is Cesare who is cute and adorkable and whatnot in the first few volumes, [spoiler]and ends up as a messed up Vatican member bent on taking over the world. xD; The real protagonist of the story, Chiaro, is annoying. I hate him. >.>; Everyone seems to love Chiaro most because he seems to be the only one with morals in the story, but his goody-goodyness gets on my nerves. With him, it's the other way around. He used to be an assassin, working to free his father from prison. He's a good person, but he doesn't have any quelms about killing people. That is, until he meets Cesare.[/spoiler]
I also like the villans in the story who have big ideals that they think will help humanity in the long run, like Light Yagami from Death Note.
I also like the evil messed up insane people who turn out to be okay later, but still a little messed up. This is a bit rarer for me than the first two kinds of characters I mentioned, but one one of these shows up and I like their personality, I adore them even more. My example in this case is Gaara from Naruto, the only character from that show that I still like even after getting over the series and going so far as to stop paying attention to the series totally. Another example is Tobei from Togari (a great series, horrible inconclusive ending. xP ).

It really depends on the series. For instance, I read the Naruto manga...and let me tell you, Akatsuki = awesome, in my opinion. It's a damn shame I didn't grow to like Deidara until (spoiler) after he died, though. :( And Tobi makes me giggle. They're all quite different from the rest of the characters, and it's awesome. XP Shame they're probably all going to die, because that's just the way this manga goes.
However, in FMA...I'd give MY arm and leg just to be able to kill most of the damn homunculi. They're fascinating characters, sure...but that doesn't stop me from hating all of them apart from Lust and Wrath. I'd PROBABLY be able to tolerate Gluttony if it weren't for the whole...EATING PEOPLE business, but...god. No. Ew.
...I have a long story on why I like Zetsu but not Gluttony...but I'll spare you; it will kill your brain.
Death Note vs. Code Geass - I'm Pro-Zero and Anti-Kira, because of one small detail - Lelouch is trying to stop a war. He recognizes that in order to do that, he has to worsen the situation a bit before it can get better. Light was trying to alter a perfect balance of good and evil. The world NEEDS some "bad" people in order for "good" to actually be GOOD. This balance has worked for us since humanity came into existence. Why change it?
Both go into psycho mode with their power, yes....but I like one and not the other.
So, like I said...it COMPLETELY depends on the series.

Well it depends. Some evil characters just need to get over it and get a life, but some actually have a good reason [not something like "he was supposed to be mine" kind of crap]. But some of the characters that are villains are just...awesome, while the main hero just plain stupid, too nice, or whatever else that's obnoxious. And the villains tend to have awesome clothes x3

Villains all the way, there are more mis understood ones, and through it all, i like them over the happy characters. There are times I purposely don't choose my favorite character to be the main character, and the next thing I know it is a villain.

Hm...I don't know. D: I tend to go for both; but the heroes I go for are always the not-so-nice ones, or just the grumpy-I'd-kill-you-as-soon-as-look-at-you types. >.>;;
-Kadaj :: Villain [Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children]
-Sephiroth :: Villain [Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children]
-Yazoo :: Villain [FInal Fantasy VII: Advent Children]
-Tyki Mikk :: Villain [D. Gray-Man]
-Debit :: Villain [D. Gray-Man]
-Jasdebi :: Villain [D. Gray-Man]
-Ichimaru Gin :: Villain [Bleach]
-Ulquiorra Schiffer :: Villain [Bleach]
-Szayel Aporro Grantz :: Villain [Bleach]
-Il Forte Aporror Grantz :: Villain [Bleach]
-Nnoitra Jiruga :: Villain [Bleach]
-Envy :: Villain [Fullmetal Alchemist]
-Lust :: Villain [Fullmetal Alchemist]
-Yagami Raito :: Villain [Death Note]
-Yanagi Kuryu :: Villain (?) [KAMUI]
-Kanda Yu :: Hero [D. Gray-man]
-Lenalee Lee :: Hero [D. Gray-man]
-Bak Chan :: Hero [D. Gray-Man]
-Fou :: Hero [D. Gray-Man]
-L :: Hero [Death Note]
-Tokiya Mikagami :: Hero [Flame of Recca]
-Lelouch Lamperouge :: Hero [Code Geass]
-Hitsugaya Toshirou :: Hero [Bleach]
-Kuchiki Byakuya :: Hero [Bleach]
-Ukitake Jyushiro :: Hero [Bleach]
-Shunshin Yoruichi :: Hero [Bleach]
-Roy Mustang :: Hero [Fullmetal Alchemist]
-Yao Ling :: Hero [Fullmetal Alchemist]
-Ran Fan :: Hero [Fullmetal Alchemist]
-Fay D. Flourite :: Hero [Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle]
-Ashura-o :: Hero [Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle]
-Shui Tachibana :: Hero [KAMUI]
-Yuuko Ichihara :: Hero [xxxHolic]
...I could go on, but then we'd be here forever. Suffice to say, Fullmetal Phantom put it in simpler terms; it depends on the series/character--I don't have a set preference, like "I always like the villains" or "I always like the heroes". xD;; I just tend to go for the darker types.

I agree with you fully, it is funny how most of who you list is the same people I like. Also a lot for me have a bit to do with how they look, like I think my favorite character of FF13 is going to be the guy in vesus, who has a trailer about him, but maybe it is the I will kill you look, but he looks awesome, and all I've see is a trailer. Also people like Kadaj and Lazoo and Byakuya and everyone are all misunderstood characters, like people don't like them for the wrong reasons, or are hurting a lot on the inside, but they don't show it.
I think I like them best :)

I like endeering charecters, the charecters who are always trying to reach for something better, and are often just adorable doing so. For that reason I don't judge between hero or villian when I make a decision. I judge the charecter, not their role in the series.
That said, I don't like villians or heroes who are obviously going to die/lose in the end. I suppose that adds on to charecter, not knowing who is going to win.
I also cannot stand most misunderstood villians. Its such a common plot point, that its annoying.

I like a bit of both. I'm rather shallow though so it often comes down to whichever bishonen has longer hair. I do have a great love for grumpy good guys like Hitsugaya (bleach) and Kanda (D.gray man0, or the type that's sweet one minute then psycho the next like Okita Shoji (Peacemaker) or Goku (Saiyuki sp?).

Haha, yea, I realized that too. I was listing the characters, and then I reread the previous posts and went "...wait. Mine is really similar ._.;;;"
@AntiOrder: XD I'm a sucker for bishonen too; anyone who has a pretty face and long pretty hair generally wins, in my book.

It depends on the genre. If it's a shoujo manga, I tend to like the heroes better. Unless it's a fantasy shoujo manga- then I like the villains more. They tend to have the more in depth pasts, and their character designs are generally better. In shonen manga, I tend to like both the heroes and villains. :)

yeah., the fantasy manga I love the villain more, like most action films I like the villain better. As for shojo manga, I like the third part of the link of the love triangle half the time, other times i do like the main character, or just like the series for the plot, more than the main characters.

Personally, I'm usually rooting for the villain, or semi-villain more than the hero. Take for example, DNAngel. I LOVE Krad and Satoshi more than any other characters in the series. But to tell you the truth, the fact that they are voiced in the English dub by my two favorite English dub artists doesn't hurt either.
The other characters that I love more than anything else are Vegeta from DBZ and Akabane from Get Backers. As a matter of fact, Akabane is actually my current obsession at the moment.

I usually like the silver haired characters weather their villains or heroes (usually vilains). But I like a lot of the heroes, just not always the main characters (root for the underdogs).
That sad I guess my favourite and also most hated villain would be Muraki from Yami no Matsuei. He's evil, sadistic, a paedophile, and we share a birthday :lol:
