I prefer subs. The whole "feel" of anime gets lost in English dubbing. I think that most Chinese dubbings are alright since, Chinese and Japanese are somewhat similar and the "feel" is kept. I think the Mirumo De Pon! dub was good in Chinese. The characters sound similar to the Japanese version.

For some reason, I think that the cuteness in original Japanese versions can't really be portrayed with English since most of the time, English isn't very cute in general XD When I speak English, my voice is deeper and less childish than when I speak Chinese.

Personally, I very much like the english dubbed anime. Alot of people fuss about it, but I usually think the voices work well for the characters.

Such as the Disgaea anime, and for that matter the games... the english voices were good, I thought, and I loved the voice used for Laharl, even though it looks as if I'm one of the few!

Azizi 08-24-2007 08:59 PM

I don't mind either. Though I have to say.. the English voice they gave Naruto and Kakashi are really.. well, not what I expected. And the same with Sanji from One Piece.

Apado 08-28-2007 01:43 AM

Japanese/raw dubs are nicer to hear... except on Hellsing, Intergra sounds like an old lady >o<;

On a whole, I really prefer subbed anime. The voices fit the characters so much better most of the time. There's a few rare exceptions, but not many.

Cowboy Bebop is absolutely horrible in Japanese, I honestly can't stand their voices in that one. But the English voice actors? They made Bebop absolutely epic for me.

Comedies like Excel Saga and Golden Boy are good in English, too. I laughed my goddamn ass off at Golden Boy's dub. It was bad, but it was GOOD. So very good.

Ah! And in Tales of the Abyss - a video game, but still - I prefer the English version much more than the Japanese. Jade sounds so old and boring in the Japanese version and Dist.. He just doesn't even sound like himself. But the dubbed version portrays them quite well.

Other than those, though, I really do prefer subs. :3

Ouran Host Club, Fruits Basket, Peach Girl, and Angel Sanctuary ~~ Japanese

Cardcaptors, Naruto and Sailor Moon ~~English

I mostly like watching them in Japanese with english subs(duh!) cuz i think it sounds sooo much cooler!!! :D

Miyako 10-03-2007 04:58 AM

I like watching Japanese ones better with English subtitles because it sounds more original and better. The ones with the English voices sound really weird...Watching Cheeky Angel in Japanese is way better than in English!

akane1412 10-05-2007 02:39 PM

well the anime I love in japanese over all others is Saiyuki, I love all the seiyuu's there (voice actors) being my favorite Hoshi Souichirou (he also did Kazuki in getbackers, Sunao in Suki wa mono suki dakara shouganai, the guy who was married to moo-chan in tactics ... and many other cool characters XD)

now in english ... I'm still to see a dubbing I like because seriously I've never heard any o.o ...

Usually anime for me it's only in japanese, at the point I would rather watch it raw then dubbed ...

Kisa 10-08-2007 11:49 AM

I like Fruits Basket and Inuyasha in English, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and CardCaptor Sakura in Japanese.

Taviren 10-08-2007 12:12 PM

It's been mentioned before but... my reason for preferring Japanese over English is that the Japanese voice actors tend to suit their characters more than the English ones. Really though, this is true for all dubs. I mean, have you ever watched an American tv show dubbed in Japanese? The voices are terrible (for the most part).

nike13 10-08-2007 03:15 PM

That's happened to me a lot. My friend had leant me Inuyasha in japanese before it came out here in the US, I got through 2 boxsets and sat down to finally watch the US showing and turned it off after 2 minutes because I wanted to strangle Kagome and Inuyasha sounded like this weakling little boy.

Its odd how the personalities change from one version to another just by the voice and how things are translated to match the lip movements. Cardcaptor Sakura was the same way for me as it was for you, except I first saw Cardcaptors (the dub version) and then found the japanese version to see just how much was cut out.

I'll watch anime in both Japanese and English, though I would like to see the anime first in Japanese before I hear it dubbed. Chances are, with past experiences, I end up preferring the Japanese version no matter which order I see it in -- either English first then Japanese, or vice versa. I don't think English actors don't have the "oomph" that Japanese voice actors can bring to the table. They make it wayyyy too corny. >_>;

Freya Sui 10-11-2007 12:13 PM

I find it impossible to like dubs, I can stand them but I will never prefer them.
Ones I thought were done quite well and didn't ruin the anime: .hacks, Fruits Basket, Slayers(The sound was messed up on season 1 for Japanese track so I was forced to watch it, got used to it after a while but when I got onto season 2 I loved the Japanese voice much more)
...Guess I havn't seen much dubs ^^;

Card Captor Sakura dub makes me want to bomb the people who did it. And Tokyo Mew Mew got ripped apart.
Naruto was disgusting and actually put me off Naruto for a while >.>;
Sailor Moon's makes me laugh, what are they 80?

littleaes 10-11-2007 05:37 PM

My favorite anime, Daa! Daa! Daa!, is only in Japanese but has subtitles. If I truly like a series, I'll watch it either way. I never saw the Japanese version of CCS, but I loved the english version so that doesn't even matter to me... Actually, I saw one episode in Japanese, cause they didn't show it in English.

Another good show to watch in Japanese is Kamichama Karin (I've yet to find the English version of that either). But I'd much rather see it dubbed... Especially since the site I use to see the series only has a few of the episodes. ._.

naruu 10-11-2007 11:26 PM

I'm all for most English dubs, I usually only watch them in Japanese if I have to. (If the dub isn't out yet.)

serenitykit 10-11-2007 11:44 PM

most animes are only good in japanese as that is the language they were written for. When they are translated, they loss their original meaning and somethings can't be translated so they arent put down. There are things that are better in English however like Sailor Moon. Other things should just stay in Jap with subtitles on them.

Wee Little Pixi 10-12-2007 12:41 AM

I watch mostly subtitled anime these days, and it does mess with my head a little when I'm watching a character, that I've gotten use to hearing in Japanese, speak English, and the voice is just so different.

That being said, I do still enjoy a high quality English dub.

Masaki 10-12-2007 12:44 AM

I only watch animes in Japanese with English subtitles.
I can't watch them in English.
The voices don't fit the characters at all.
Like in Bleach.
o_o

There are some exceptations though.
I watch Inuyasha and Fruits Basket
in English and not Japanese.

Jimpi 10-14-2007 04:00 AM

Japanese:
Tokyo Mew Mew
Ouran High School Host Club

English:
Naruto
Inuyasha

I hate how the voices in some animes never match the characters (Just like how Masaki said) Like when the give a lolita character a deep voice! I mean what the crap?
And when they change the characters names like in Tokyo Mew Mew AKA *says sarcastically* Mew Mew Power.
FEh! Why they gotta get rid of the cool names? I liked Lettuce's name!!

  • I like all my shows in japanese. with subs of course.

It just seems much more fitting and easier to understand if it's that way.

RoyalSquishy 10-14-2007 04:27 AM

I definitely love watching anime in the Japanese language more than in the english language. I guess I like the way Japanese sounds.

Bunai 10-14-2007 05:03 AM

i probably wont read through the thread.
i am sensitive about the whole dub vs sub debate.

i watch anime in any language, because i find that interest me. i find the anime fans of today, way too spoiled.

anyway. to the original post.
most recent anime: English-Air Gear...the lead voice in the Japanese dub, just doesnt work, his acting is very armature...which makes sense since it was pretty much his first role lol but he does not improve for over 13 episodes!

cant really say which i prefer. since i just like to listen in any form. Gundam Wing dub by far is the funnest thing i have been through, i dont even have to watch it, just listen to it, so much drama.

Anahita 10-14-2007 05:50 AM

Japanese usually... unless the dub is really good, which is rare.

Naleh 10-14-2007 07:00 AM

Ah, there are some animes I like better in Japanese (with english sub since I can't understand it otherwise) than in english. Naruto obviously is way better in japanese than english, Azumanga and Excel Saga are also better in Japanase due to the fact that their japanese voices don't hurt my ears the way the english ones do. Ugh... the high pitch...the internal ear-bleeds...

There are other Animes I like in Japanese but since I haven't heard the english versions of them, I can't really compare it fairly. I can't think of an Anime however that is best in english...yet. I've only seen Bleach in english so, I have no way of knowing if Japanese Bleach is better than English Bleach.

~Lonely_Sakura~ 10-14-2007 07:59 PM

I don't really mind that much about the Japanese or English dubbed. There are times I prefer Japanese because the characters voices seems to match them, but since I don't really know Japanese, I have to watch them in English subtitles. The only problem is that the english subs are wrong sometimes. There are some anime that are good or okay being english dubbed though...
