In the past year i have gotten quite into the graphic novel media, i don't post this in the comic book forum because i feel that the graphic novel have a whole different appeal then even the comic books. now i could be wrong cause i have only read two but here are my view on them.

The First was V for Vendetta and i was very skeptic when i was first told about it because i was sure it would be like other comic books but the subject matter was so much better and so much deeper then any comic books that i had attempted to read plus there was so much more development of characters and plots and it just all worked in a way that i don't think it would have worked had it just been a novel. i don't want to give it away if anyone hasn't read it or if they have seen the movie but having picked up the book but let me tell you, its better then the move and there is a lot of difference in the plot and i mean so much so that at first i didn't know what i liked better because the two stories were so different and yet they had the same totalitarian kinda ideas of a time that would be really scary.

The second was for a course i was taking this year and it was called Maus by Art Speigelman and it is a true story based on his fathers life as a survivor of the holocaust and the invasions in Poland during WWII. the difference i think with Maus was that you got a whole different visual image that totally leads the graphic novels in their own kinda genre. to see maps of the camps and diagrams described by the main character of how the had to hide and just how bad it was for the Jewish people was heartbreaking. the graphic nature of the story really did bring the shock value forward when it came to looking at the work and seeing in a way what so many had tried to cover up. plus it really got into a more psychological aspect of life when talking about the fathers life after the war and how hard it was to live with this man who was so controlling and paranoid but you couldn't blame him knowing what he went through.

So in my mind the graphic novels are totally worth looking into. they go more in depth then a comic book and because of the graphic nature of the work you don't have all the text to try and create the images for you. i guess sometimes that can be a bad thing but sometimes i think it can really bring a story into light and drive it home in a way.

I'd like more opinions on graphic novels and any recommendations for more. I've heard that the graphic novel 300 is amazing anyone have any feed back on that?

I love graphic novels, although I only recently got into them.
They can be really amazingly done.

at times pages are re drawn a lot better than they were in the comic. and you get extras.
plus its fun to tote around.
