Fables
Has anybody here ever picked up the Fables series? I'm sure there must be others.
I absolutely adore this series. I'd have the whole thing, but then my friends wouldn't know what to get me for birthdays/christmas, so I'm still collecting. ^^ For those of you who are unaware as to the premise of the series, it is essentially this: Characters from traditional fairytales (in particular those of Snow White, Rose Red, the Big Bad Wolf, etc) lived, at one point, in their own fairytale land. The stories were not quite as originally told-- most end up being a little darker than the usual-- but they keep true to their roots. At any rate, the series starts off by explaining they've been driven from their fairytale land by someone called the Adversary and are existing in the current, 'modern' world trying to hide their true identities...and have been doing so for hundreds of years, as fairytale characters don't die really. The stories are -gorgeous- and the characters are generally very well thought-out. I've been really impressed with it, though I'll admit to being a fairytale/mythology/legend buff. It has a little something for everyone, though, and I haven't met anyone yet who's tried it and didn't enjoy it. |
I love Fables.
Boy Blue is my favorite character. I even dressed up as him for Halloween. I've even got some of my friends who don't read comics hooked on fables. :o |
I'm rather fond of Snow White because of her general kickarseness, but Cinderella's definitely my favourite. XD And Rose Red a bit because she's all punky, but then she annoys me sometimes too because of it.
|
Cinderella's awesome. That one issue with her and Ichabod Crane was great.
I think I liked Snow White more when she was working in the Mayor's office and had to deal with everyone's crap. |
Yeah, that's what I meant. With her current situation, she's a little less kickarse.
|
Ambrose (Fly) is my fav
i especially like how the story is progressing so far |
What, no mention of Bigby as a favorite? He tops my list by leaps and bounds. I think he's a great character. Good development as far as character growth, cool abilities, and charming in his way. Of course, he has his shady past, but that's what makes him cool.
As to Snow, I think she's still pretty awesome. Maybe she's not in charge anymore, but I love how she handled things with her family. No spoilers, I just think she was very brave and very strong. Bigby may have been right in some of the things he said, but she's grown a lot too. Any one read the Jack side comics? Are they any good? |
My only problem with Bigby is that he's so much like Wolverine it's scary. Some times I forget they're separate characters. Both are professional killers. Both smoke (well, Wolverine did before Marvel's "NO SMOKING" mandate). Both have a heart of gold. Both are hairy. Both have shady pasts. Both are feral. Both enjoy nature and the outdoors.
I've heard the Jack comics aren't as good as the main series, but both will be tying into each other soon. |
I love Fables its amazing. I mean come on it's gotta be! It's won how many Eisners? 7
I love Boy Blue. He's such a plot twist character. I loved him when he was Snow's secretary and I loved him more when he became the Fable that scared The Adversary's people. In Fables you can never tell what's going to happen next. I'm always surprised. The art work is beautiful and I always get mad when they do guest art issues. The guests aren't ever as good. 1001 Nights of Snowfall is one of my favorite parts. I also love the one featuring around Boy Blue. Volume 6 - Homelands. As a side note. The Snow Queen scares me. |
I'll second a vote for Bigby.
I can see where he would be comparable to Wolverine, but at the same time, I disagree. He's a deeper character overall than Wolverine, who is cool, I grant you, but like a lot of Marvel characters is in the end, about as deep as a kiddie pool. No offense to fans, but I've never been able to stick with the books because they keep stopping in the middle of plot arcs and then just -resetting- things. Fables hasn't done that, they've just plowed ahead, complete with character deaths, character development, twists that blow your mind (like the Adversary) and making even the most mental characters like Jack actually cool in their own right. :o I think my favorite characters at the moment are probably Jack and Bigby. Jack because he's a jerk but he's an entertaining one, and Bigby because, well... I just kind of happen to be a sucker for his story. And I'm rambling. *heh* Sorry. But yes, I'm definitely another fan. |
My teacher got me into Fables and have to say I enjoyed the story. He let me borrow one copy and I fell in love with it. Know I am starting to collect them. I do enjoy Snow White the most. I thought she was a great defining character.

I'm way behind on reading the series, but what I have read was amazing. |
I'm so interested in picking this up. I haven't bought a new comic in over a year now. Money was tight for a while >.< But I love the cover art and the idea of the storyline. I've been reading summaries but it's just not the same.
Hopefully before Christmas time I can get some catch up comic reading done. |
Oh I loooove Fables. It's the only comic I read anymore, having a comic hobby has become pretty expensive in the past 12 years :(.
Anyway, yeah I was really drawn in by the whole "fairy tale characters having to face the real world" in a not funy or cute way (ala Enchanted [great movie, but wouldn't work as a comic xd]) It's fantastic because the art is beaultiful, the writing is smart and it's stories are so multi faceted. I loved the concept of "the farm" for the characters that "couldn't survive" or be accepted in the real world. Characters like Bigby and and Boy blue are fantastic, but I have a special place in my heart of the wonderful, and crazy as hell, goldilocks. I kind of like Rose Red too, but her "punkness" gets a wee bit cliched for me sometimes. Overall this is te only comic I've really been able to get interested in, in the past few years, I can't find anything wrong with it, it's almost perfect. |
I have only read the first volume and I wish I could get my hands on more! The library only has the first and I don't really have the money to buy them all.
|
I love Fables too ... I mean nothing is perfect, but they do a pretty nice job on this one.
I really didn't pick this up till late because I hate the premise of the characters living in NYC, like, whose idea was that? I hate how so many current comics have to center on NYC. But the later issues don't focus so much on the metropolis angle -- taking place on the farm and nearby. I think their story arcs are pretty close to perfect also, and how they got a little more complex with The Good Prince. Their twists and turns are not overly gimmicky, especially considering the premise of the series. I would guess Bigby is also a bit of a tribute to Wolverine also, in a quiet way. I really don't want to put spoilers out there, but his Character is a lot more clever than a ripoff. I also think the Mouse Police are pretty awesome. |
I discovered this around the same time as I discovered Sandman, unfortunately I have yet to read the rest of the series. I loved it though. ^_^
|
one of my favourites. i have all the trades except the most recent and ONLY because i have to get to the city to pick it up. i like bigby and prince charming and abrose. ohyes.
|
I only got fables because my local comic store ordered too many and offered me a deal if i would buy the first 5 trade paper backs. at the time i was getting a lot of work and spending a lot in the comix shoppe so they figured they could take advantage of my overspending but they also promised that I'd like them. Boy did I ever! I am such a huge fan now and recommend them to anyone I can!
At about the time i started on them Jack of Fables came out and so I get Jack by the issue and Fables by the trade paperback which is super harsh for the waiting factor. It seems to take forever before I get a fables update and then I read it all in one sitting. It's good that so far Jack's story has been it's own entirely. You can read only fables or only jack and not feel you're missing too much. Also I just love the covers for the Jack of Fables books though because they are awesome like : "We'll mail you a stinky dead gopher if you don't buy this issue of Jack of Fables", "First there were heroes then there were super heroes then there was Jack of Fables", "No one deserves his own book more than Jack of Fables", "Men and women alike long to have hair like Jack of Fables". I also like Jack because his books involve the persons who are literary conventions and because he IS Jack of Fables, he's THE Jack, Jack of the tales, Jack frost, Jack be nimble, Jack Horner ect. and Also he's a "Jack" of all trades  That being said my favorite characters are Rose Red, Bigby and the Wolfcubs! I love stories with the cubs  |
I never really looked at Jack that way. I haven't liked his books so much, I think I need to try to take a look at them with that in mind.
|
I never liked him too much until I realized that he was the same Jack in all the stories. For some reason i just really like that idea and in the Jack series you get to read about a lot of his adventures.
|
I've only read the first trade paperback of it. I plan on reading more of it, since I really did enjoy it.
I've been holding off a tiny bit though, because a friend said I should read Grimm Fairy Tales at the same time. Same characters, but a much darker twist, he said it was interesting to read the contrasting stories at roughly the same time. Sadly, my bookstore seems to be having issues getting the ones I ordered in. Sadness ensues. |
If you have the will power then wait becuase once you really get in to fables it's hard to stop
i envy people who get to read it from the beginning when there are so many trade paper backs out |
Fables is one of my favorite graphic novels/comic book series of all time. X3
I've been collecting the trade paper backs except for the recent ones. I'm stuck in War and Pieces. I won't give out spoilers.. but my favorite characters will come out in the later part of the series so I can't mention em...But I still admire Bigby. He's too awesome for his own good. XD Oh.. by the way, I wonder if anyone here knows that Fables is being made into a TV series? It's already confirmed but they haven't cast them yet. It's still in the writing process..but I sure hope they'll do a good job in making it. D: |
Yes i heard something about that but i wonder how it's going to be done. Will it be like that ABC mini series the tenth kingdom or will it end up as a kind of sitcom, or even totally a drama? There are so many genres and the story is so long. I'm also worried that they;ll try to cram to much into a first season fearing that there won't be enough seasons to get it all in. Or that they'll go straight into the war... oh it's very nerve raking. TV and movies always ruin things because they try to use something that caters to a group of people and try to make it accessable to everyone including people who otherwise wouldn't even read...:P X(
