SGT Frog
 

A series I first got into thanks to a little note on the shelf of my local manga/comic book store, SGT Frog is a series based around the invasion attempts of a group of frog-like aliens, who have been forced to live with a family of humans.

It is just as insane as the premise sounds, and as well as being completely unique also totally works. The characters are all lovable and/or neurotic, and unlike with many other manga and anime I find that the jokes are not 'lost in translation'.

Perhaps the most likable aspect of this manga is the fact that it constantly makes fun of itself and the typical and generic plots and themes in others, making it an extremely light-hearted affair.

However, that's not to say that there is no plot. While most volumes end with things returning to the status quo, all the while little details occur that build up into a subtle but extremely significant plot point. This can cause for a slight unbalance between the earlier and later volumes, but largely works well.

The art is nice, but not particularly unique. It performs its task well enough - although the occasional combination of drawn image and photograph-background can be jarring. The human character designs are fairly as-to-be-expected, and it is truly only the aliens which set this manga apart from the art alone.

So, now I've spent enough time blathering on about SGT Frog - any SGT Frog fans already out there? Anybody I need to persuade a little bit further to try out this delightful series?

I've only read the first one and I like it, kinda wish to see the anime version of this one. Though my mom thinks I'm nuts, and she's a big anime fan herself. The frogs are cute.

omg this is the best manga i have ever read because i couldnt put it down i read manga 1 and 2 (i had the combo book) in one sitting i was laughing out loud and my bf was like wtf is so funny i got him to read it and he had the same reaction. plus i really love frogs so that made it better

I've only read a couple of volumes but I seriously love SGT Frog so much, the characters are adorable and i find myself laughing all the time while reading it. XD

I haven't seen the manga, only occasionally when it's being aired on Cartoon Network. I didn't find them similar to frogs at all, but then alien frogs probably don't look the same as Earth frogs anyway xD
