I was wondering what everyone's top 5 anime are and why. Mostly because, I'm always looking for good anime and they're hard to find, and I'd like to discover more. More, more, more! >:3
Muahahaha, I'm greedy >.>
It'll also help other people with my same goal find anime that they might like^^
Concept:
Convince me what anime you think is the best! Or, a few you think are. I'll be keeping up to date every morning with what is nominated with the "your top 5" list and tallies~
Note: To get on the list, there has to be 2 or more people who nominated the same anime. To nominate an anime, you mention it.
Then I'll watch them if they aren't a million episodes long, and I haven't seen it yet.
After I'm done watching them, I'll post my reviews of what I think about the choices you've made for your top, and then post what i think the order should be in the "my top 5" list.
•[Jan.16.08]Announcement: Thread is dying D: Ahhh sorry I haven't posted anything new, finals this week. I promise I'll post some review under "My Anime" this weekend!
•[Jan.11.08]Reviews added to"My Anime" - Fruits Basket, Saikano, Full Metal Alchemist, Tales of Eternia, and Claymore
•[Jan.9.08]"Your top 5" Updated, with tallies
•[Jan.5.08]"Your top 5" updated, changes made to first post, and review added to "My Anime" - Paradise Kiss
•[Jan.4.08]Established "Top 5 Anime"

• Follow all Mene's TOS
• No flaming! D:<
• Explain why (in detail if you can) you like the anime you chose.
• Label your spoilers! D: We don't want people stumbling into some reading and figure out what happens in an anime they're watching when they don't want to. Please have your label like this:

1.Full Metal Alchemist (2)
2.Death Note (1)
3.Ouran High School Host Club (1)
4.Fruits Basket
5.Ceres
Note: The number in parentheses is the number of times it's been voted for. The ones without numbers are the ones that have been nominated, but not voted for.

My Anime
Since I can't put in what I think the top 5 should be, or else the whole top thing would be rigged, I'll post my favorites here.^^ It's too hard for me to put in order what is the best, so I'm just chosing which I think are good and really really enjoyed!

What I've watched
Air: Wow, this anime was so lovable. You just latch onto the characters like leeches, and care for them so much. At least, I did. The story is amazing! I loved it! Pretty original if you ask me. It's about a guy who is looking for a girl in the sky, just as all of his ancestors did. His dying wish is to be reincarnated into a crow so that he can find her. It's a very heart-jerking anime.
Basilisk: Basilisk is also another heart-jerking anime. It's about two lovers from different ninja clans. Their clans have been at war with each other for centuries, and finally, the two lovers will unite their clans with their marriage. Though, things go wrong because an old peace treaty is broken between the clans and everything ends up in killing, chaos, and the two lovers being pitted against each other by force. It's truly tragic and a good story. Get your tissues ready!
Chrno Crusade: Chrno Crusade is based off of a true story, but I'm not religious so I don't exactly know which one (I recall it being on the news though), but you don't have to know the story to understand. Everything made perfect sense to me. It was quite interesting, and i really loved the anime. It's about a girl named Rosette and a Devil, or sinner, named Chrno. Though, Chrno has given up the lifestyle he once had as a sinner after something happened in his past, and he met Rosette. The whole story is basically about Rosette trying to find her little brother Joshua. But there's many side stories, and of course background to both chrno and rosette is revealed, making the anime even more lovable, since you get to know the characters. Even if you aren't a cryer, It will make you shed tears, I garuntee you! It's one of my top 3 anime!
Fooly Cooly: This one is just silly! I love it! It's just so strange, fun, and serious all at the same time. (Not too much seriousness in it though). If you like weird things coming out of people's heads, a girl going around hitting people with guitars, giant robotic cute dog things, and a guy with funky eyebrows, you've come to the right place! It was a good change, and an original.
Nightwalker[(though, I haven't finished it since my friend sends it to me via aim and we haven't had time D: ):
MushishiIt doesn't really follow one path or one goal. Ginko's (the main character) path is basically going town to town helping people with mushi encounters, since normal doctors can't fix it, only mushi-shi, like Ginko, can. These encounters range from people predicting the future to a boy with god's left hand. It's an adventure of the paranormal, it's fun to see all the scenarios.
Full Metal Alchemist: This story is well put together, you really get attached to the characters and you just want more! Those who are interested in 'magic' i guess would find an interest in this anime. Though, it isn't magic that this revolves around, it's alchemy. They brought a scientific aspect into the anime when they created it, which i liked. It was very realistic, except it wasn't. Anyway, It's about two brothers, Ed and Al Ulrich who are sons of a famous alchemist, their father. But, he left when they were very young. A few years after that happens, their mother dies and they perform a forbidden taboo of alchemy and try to bring their mother back. They make a horrible mistake and Ed loses an arm, then his brother was about to lose his whole body until Ed sealed his soul to a suit of armor, thus losing his leg. Because of his metal limbs, he is known as Full Metal. The two brothers go around trying to find this 'philosopher's stone' and the story gets interesting as they dive deeper into investigating its whereabouts.
Paradise Kiss: alright, I just finished this anime, and I have no idea why I really liked it. I liked the plot and everything, it kind of went pretty fast though, at least Caroline and George's relationship. Though, throughout the whole anime I could relate to them. George's personality was so much like my boyfriend's, so it was so strange watching this couple. Anyway, it was pretty good, but not enough to make me cry, and I'm a really easy cryer. I guess I just couldn't connect to it like i do with others. I don't know, you just have to watch it, I LOVE the opening and ending themes, I'm definitely finding them somewhere and putting them on my zune :3.
It didn't seem organized either, kind of like it repeated things. "oh i love you~" "now i'm fighting with you~" "oh now we have sex so i love you again" "oh now i'm angry with you! you didn't call me!" "oh but i missed you!"
Honestly, watch it, I don't know what to say, I loved it but I didn't at the same time. The ending was disappointing to me too :/ but I think that was for personal reasons, but it was realistic.
Fruits Basket: This was a cute one. It's about a girl named Tohru Honda. She goes to high school like a normal girl, except her mother died and so she lives in a tent in a nearby woods, which, she thought was uninhabited by houses. Apparently she was wrong. She ends up finding out that Yuki Sohma, a classmate of hers, lives in the very same woods. Things happen and Tohru's tent was destroyed by a land slide and she ends up living with Yuki, where where she discovers some secrets and meets some wonderful friends.
Saikano: Saikano is a love story, so all of you who don't like love stories, goodbye D:! Though, there's a lot of destruction and killing, so if you like that, there's plenty of it. Anyway, it's about a girl named Chise and a boy named Shuji. They're both looking for love, so they basically... get together and it seems they forced themselves to love each other, until the very end. Though, Chise is a weapon of mass destruction and she finds that out as she starts to date Shuji. She has guns, rockets, torpedos, wings, coming from her body. She is pressured to help to military and gets called at all hours of the day/night, sometimes abandoning Shuji. The anime is about Shuji and Chise's struggle to love and be together.
Tales of EterniaI don't remember too much about this anime, but it was a good one. Short, too. It's about a group who is trying to get one of their friends back to her ancient planet. Through the anime, they meet up with foes who are from the same planet, dive into mysterious history, and help a city/village who needs it, since a certain force is trying to take over (you'll find out who, don't want to give it away!). It's a fun anime, with sad parts too, and there's some action. Short and sweet. Not great, not horrible. Average anime.
Claymore: Beware if you don't like blood, limbs get chopped off left and right, people get eaten and sliced. It was a good anime, though I felt the ending was a cliffhanger :/. It's about a Claymore named Claire and a regular boy named Raki. It starts off where there's a 'yoma', the threatening force, in a village who has taken on the form of a human. Raki's family ends up being slaughtered and he leaves the village. While he was in the village though, he meets Claire and takes an interest in her, and so he wants to journey with her. After leaving the village, Raki and Claire go city to city and they (well... just claire :P) exterminate the yoma. Through the series, you learn about Claire's past, her grudge, and the organization she works for, and how she came to be. It's a sweet story, and very actiony/bloody. The scenes where people get chopped up aren't very gory, (I don't think it even compares to Elfin Lied, for those of you have watched it).

Hm. This seems like a very clever idea. (If you are still reserving posts, just tell me. I can delete this post.)
My Top:
1. Paradise Kiss-There are only twelve episodes so it is easy to finish in less than a week. (Thank goodness!) It's simply about a girl name Yukari who is discovered to become a model in a fashion show. The group that is supporting her is known as Paradise Kiss. The storyplot is simple so it is not that hard to get confused with in.
2. Jigoku Shoujo (translated as Hell Girl)- Each episode has new characters and a new storyplot. It's a great series to see how desperate people are to get revenge on those who they hate. (and for who they are taking revenge for.) It's one of those series where you can start at episode 12 and still be able to know what happens. Again, simple.
3. Welcome to the NHK-Although it is not a series that I recommend to many, I do have to say that it has changed how I view others around the world. *Conspiracy.* I would have never known that some people actually thought this way and would isolate themselves from the world. It's a great series for those who are looking for a new change. The characters are simply loveable on there there. xD.
4. Ouran Host Club-It is impossible to dislike these guys who are in the Host Club. They are so amazing. Either way, the opening and ending themes are amazing for the series and fit in very nicely with it. Every episode is a new surprise. I have never seen a series with well thought out characters as this. Simply amazing.
5. Cardcaptor Sakura- The series is a bit "old" but it is the only anime series that I actually enjoyed from CLAMP. (their manga is always better than the anime, however CCS was pretty close to the best!) The storyplot was great and matched the manga perfectly. I can always pop in this DVD an watch it any day in any mood. It is amazing.
Overall, that is my list. I know they aren't the top animes ever but they are my top. ^_^.

Woo! That's the whole point^^ and no, your post is fine^^
And, Paradise Kiss! I saw that in my Play magazine i get about video games and anime last year and I was really interested in it!^^ I couldn't find it anywhere though :/ It's probably because it just came out, so I'll have to search again^^
Ouran is a good anime~, I really loved the characters too^^! Haruhi was so cute too, I loved her personality and how she pinned some of the characters to the wall when they thought they were so sly~ but she saw right through them^^
Brilliant, and I loved the ending, but it wasn't what I wanted, haha.
As for Cardcaptor Sakura, I remember watching that along with Sailor Moon when I was really little, but they canceled those shows :/ it sucks that we don't have a lot of anime here in north america, there are like 1 or 2 that i know of, but they air anime at like 11pm -.- grawr. How about an all anime channel, all day, all the time? I'd be very happy with that :3
As for the others, I haven't seen, or heard of them

1. Death Note -; oh come on Light and L are so cute. xD!
i love the fact that Light tries to make the world a better place but i hate him for what he does to L. ._.'
2. LoveLess -; Tis a Yaoi One i think.. i like yaoi.. so ill watch any yaoi anime if i like it enough. But Loveless pretty much is a master of some one. i don't know what to say without giving the story away..
3. Fruit basket -; Always Liked the Chinese Zodiac [Or Whatever] plus i always liked the cat better most of all :'] but i dislike what happens to him towards the end-ish.
4. Ouran Host Club -; People always working people over is so weird. xD its one of those Shows where you think something is going to happen but it never does. i really didn't like the ending though.
5 Hellsing -; Vampires Blood killing normal stuff i'm into but its to short and the story could be a bit longer so it'd be better.

Peach Girl:It's so dramatic because of Momo Chan's friend (not really half friend half enemy) trys to take what she has. It's also sad because Momo Chan also gets hurt and crys because of her half friend (I forgot the half friend's name lol X3) Makes me wanna cry so easily. Lastly, I like it because it's funny. There's a guy who likes Momo Chan keeps hugging her and the Momo Chan gets a fight with him or makes a funny anime face. At the ending they started to be friends, then boyfriend and girlfriends. Okayasu (The guy who like Momo Chan) Almost drowned but then Momo Chan's half friend uses Okayasu's phone and texted "I'm going to be fish food" and that's when Momo Chan save Okayasu and they were bf and gf forever. (Kinda.... Lol X3) Sory if it was too long.

i'm not hugely into anime, but here goes:
1. Death Note
It seems like everyone has been watching this since it came onto Cartoon Network, but you can't deny that it's really well made. The plot is just fantastic, and the entire series kept me on the edge of my seat. It just sucks you in.
2. Le Portrait de Petit Cossette
The plot of this is just awesome too. And the visuals are gorgeous. I once saw the trailer to it and I fell in love. It's creepy to.
3. Full Metal Alchemis
You can't help but like these guys. I always just want to hug Al.
4. Ellcia
Watch it if you like fantasy stuff. It's short, only like 4 episodes, but it's beyond awesome. It has a great good v evil story to it.
5. Ogre Slayer
Another short one, like 4 episode. It's really really sad, at least I think so, but that's what makes it cool.

You saw Paradise Kiss?!
Everyone seems to hate the ending, but I loved it. It wasn't the "typical" anime/chick flick ending, it was a realistic ending. I could really see this happen in real life. Especially since most long distance relationships never last. I am glad that they ended it right there rather than keeping it. I cried so much at the end. I guess it was because I could relate so much to Yukari and George. The art is gorgeous. If you want a more in depth feeling to the story, the manga is a great transition. I hated how George only got one episode to himself. (he should've gotten at least three.) Volume five of the manga has a whole book just for his story. I was sick of Yukari's for a while. They should have implied more for Kaori. My friend who saw it, didn't understand her at all. xD. I think I'll watch it again.

yeah, i could really relate to yukari/caroline and george too, because of the want of love and the long distance thing. I guess i didn't like the ending because i felt it was foreshadowing the relationship i'm in :P. I'll probably start another anime you guys have suggested later in the week... Hell Girl maybe? I'll have to look it up^^

I too related to much to them. I chose my close boyfriend rather than the one that I truly did love that moved. (not saying I hate my current boyfriend. xD.) I was satisfied with how my life ended and how Yukari's did too. I felt sorry for the other Parakiss members. the ending was like a slap in the face for them though.
The series is great, (Hell Girl) but the same thing happens over and over again. (just different characters/plot.) The only difference is episode seven. xD. *well of what I know so far.* The plot is very interesting though, since Ai seems to be the only character re-occuring. Hm. Is Mushishi good? (It was on your list.) I always wanted to see it and check it out but I never could. I heard all of the awards in my magazines but I never checked it out. (must be because the main character seems dull. xD.)

I can see why people would think that the main character is dull, it's cause he's layed back. He's very interesting though, too bad they didn't give a whole lot of background on him, I got really attached to him :/. But, the background they did give was enough for the series.
It doesn't really follow one path or one goal. His path is basically going town to town helping people with mushi encounters, since normal doctors can't fix it, only mushi-shi can, what ginko is. Well it's pretty hard to choose just five but I'll do my best. >w< These aren't in any order, just what comes to my mind.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist:
The reason I love this anime so much is because it was a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of other anime that was coming out. The animation is fantastic and beautiful, not to mention hilarious because of Hiromu Arakawa's humor. The characters are deep, complex, have interesting backgrounds, and their personalities are unique. For example Edward's lack of height being a touchy subject and easily setting him off whenever it's mentioned, Hughes' love for his daughter and wife and phone conversations with Mustang, Al's love for cats and sensitivity to others even though he's younger, so on and so forth. Don't get me started on the story because I can go on and on about that. >w<
2. Fullmetal Panic/Fumoffu
With this anime it didn't take me long to really get into it because of the humor and animation aspect. Sasuke is hilarious without trying to be, Chidori is overly violent with him yet still seen as one of the prettiest students at school, and the supporting characters all get a chance to do something in the story. At first it's mysterious and you're not quite sure why Sasuke is guarding Chidori but it's funny to watch him try and overreact.
3. DNAngel manga:
This is one of my favorites because it's a feel good story at first. The art is beautiful and has a whistful feel to it, the story deepens as you read, and you get attached to all of the characters. At first Dark Mousy was my favorite out of the cast but as the story went on I began to really like Daisuke and root for him. I was rooting for him before but was anxiously waiting for Dark to be in the pages again. XD It's a very girly type story but I love it and as it goes on it gets more complex.
4. Miyazaki anything:
Pretty much anything Miyazaki has touched is incredible. Naussicaa of the Valley of Wind, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service are just to name a few of his wonderful classics that left an impression on me as a kid. His art, stories, and characters are timeless so I can't stress enough that anything this man makes is golden. ^ ^
5. Fruits Basket manga
Now for this I do like the anime but the thing that peeves me off is that it's not finished so I prefer the manga instead. Fruits Basket was another fun manga to read because it wasn't very serious except that Tohru had lost her mother and was living in a tent but other than that things were fun and dandy. Then it started to deepen and the plot got darker, especially centered around Akito and the curse on them. This story is very unique and unlike any other I've read so again breath of fresh air and the characters are very diverse. There was a part in the series that made me cry *I usually don't cry but this was too much* and my mom asked me what was wrong and when I told her she started to cry. If a manga/comic has the depth to make someone like my mom, who's never read the story or watched the series and doesn't know the characters, cry then it has my vote. It was so moving and was a situation that has happened and can happen in life that makes you forget that these characters are fictional. I love it. (( SPOILER! The part was when Tohru was a little girl and her mom had lost her husband and was falling a part thinking she had no one to turn to and that no one else understood how she felt. When she couldn't take it she ran out of the apartment *leaving Tohru behind* and wandered around, teetering on the edge of insanity. When she returned home she found Tohru waiting for her in the doorway, asleep, and when she woke up she said, "Welcome home mommy" and her mother started to cry and hugged Tohru realizing she wasn't alone and had someone to live for.
It was so moving I couldn't help but bawl my eyes out when I turned the page. >w<))
Really REALLY sorry about the long post. ><;

This is in no particular order:
1.) Slayers- This is one of the best fantasy series out there. It has everything- comedy, sorcery, sword fighting, neat looking outfits, interesting characters, and plot twists that are hard to see coming. The characters are also well developed, and the world is very well thought out.
2.) Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok- I've only seen the first 12 episodes of it, but so far, it's very good. It mixes Norse mythology with modern day life, and has very interesting characters. The main plot itself is interesting, as well.
3.) Gestalt- This was also a very good fantasy series, but was unfortunately very short. From what I remember of it, the characters, again, were interesting, and the plot was, as well. Unfortunately, it ended with a cliffhanger. :(
4.) Ceres: Celestial Legend= Yet another fantasy title. ^^;. This one had extremely well developed characters, and all of them were portrayed in a way that you can actually somewhat emphasize with them- except for the main villain. I still have no sympathy for him. :(. The plot itself was good, and I always wanted to know what happened next. The animation was also gorgeous, and the character designs were good. Unfortunately, the anime wasn't as good as the manga, but is still definitely worth watching. I would also read the manga, as it explains things better than the anime does, and give a character who's only minor in the anime depth. The same goes for the other characters in the manga- only a few characters get depth in the anime. In the manga, all of them have depth. :)
5.) Negima- Despite how much was cut from the manga, it was still a good anime. :). The major characters are well developed, and the plot itself is good- unfortunately, it doesn't go nearly as in depth as the manga does. It also ends at the point where the manga just starts to include the magic elements in it- before then, magic use was incredibly rare, and barely mentioned. :(
I recommend the manga over the anime, but the anime is safer to show to others, as it's not nearly as perverted as the manga. The author, unfortunately, likes fanservice a bit too much. :(. If you get past that, though, it's very good.

Very nice idea. Good for the people who need help on what anime they want to watch. *nods*. I apologize for this extremely looong post.
I tend to ramble. >.<;;
Only 4 are on my list at this moment, but they are the one that really stick out for me. I've watched a lot of popular anime like Bleach, Naruto and the such but these are the ones that I love.
In no particular order.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist
It's just awesome, though people who really can't stand blood should maybe back off a bit. The characters are really defined and each has a characteristic that is neat and original to themselves. The plot is truely touching. The basic story is: Ed and Al try to transumute their mother back to life. But it is taboo, because it was never proved possible. They try and fail costing Ed's left arm and Al's body. Ed and Al with automail an a body of armor try to find the Philosopher's stone. To erase their mistakes.
2. Death Note
How can you not love this anime/manga? I personally have only just started the manga, and seen a few episodes of the anime but I love it so far.
The plotline is so original and shinigami are posed as ugly creatures that kills humans to increase their lives. The complexness of everything just draws you in.
Light Yagami is an genius in more ways then one. To use the Death Note the user must know the person's full name and their face. Then they write the person's name down into the book while thinking of that person's face. If the moment or cause of death is not specified then the person will die of a heart attack in 40 seconds. The user however can manipulate the time and cause of death.
He finds the Death Note that Ryuk (the shinigami) so happens to "drop". Light decides to use it as a way of creating a "new world". Killing all criminals to leave only a perfect world, to rule as their God. He is called "Kira" after "killer". However the mysterious L is hot on his trials with the police and many more parties. Nobody knows L's real name, but he can solve any case, at anytime, can he be able to solve this one? And so the war between Kira and L begins.
3. Full Moon (wo sagashite)
I've never seen the anime, but I have read the manga so I don't know if that counts. >w<
To put it simple this manga is really touching and innocent.
12 year old Mitsuki dreams of being a singer. But she has a tumor in her throat, so that she cannot sing loudly. Therefore her dream will never come true. Or so until she meet some shinigami, who grants a wish. She becomes a 16 year old with a tumorless throat in a swallow of a pill. After auditioning for a record team she gets acceptd immediately and becomes a huge hit. However balancing her star life and regular life is harder then Mitsuki can expect. Especially with her strict grandma who claims to hate music. This manga is too hard to describe without spoilering some major points. I can say though that this manga has lots of unexpected twists and turns, with some romance that can warm your heart.
4. Honey and Clover (I & II)
I cannot say how touching this anime is. The dreamlike animation style, with such realistic charcters and situations can break anyone's heart. This is a slice of life, romance anime, but without the most typical stuff that appear in a lot of shojo animes.
Takemoto is a student struggling to understand himself. He finds himself in love with a girl. Hagu, yet his friend Morita is also in love with her. This story follows, Yamada, Morita, Takemoto, Hagu and Mayama as they find themselves in relationships, that usually ends in heartbreak. This anime makes you cry at the cruelty of the world, yet you have to accept it, because thats how the world is.
I can do nothing to benefit this anime/manga. So I suggest to just watch it. My favourite one of them yet. =)

@Alumia: Those aren't really spoilers, you did really well describing the anime^^ And thank you, I hope this thread catches on, I want it to spread like disease : D. Anyway, a spoiler is more like giving away plot details, for example, "yeah, in episode 4, Linda chooses Chris and not Scott." which may be a major factor. Linda might be dating scott and the time, and they're about to get married. Something that would ruin the anime for them, previews are good though^^ pretty much... things that happen in episode 1 or 2, or what you read on the back of a dvd you bought.
also, it's fine if you only chose 4^^ you don't have to chose 5, it isn't a requirement.

haha surprisingly, i haven't been sick this winter! All my friends have gotten sick though and I was around them. I guess my immune system is even stronger. I rarely get colds.

I know what you mean. I usually don't get sick around winter. But strangely I get colds during summer time. My immune system is weird like that. XD
