Mass Effect is an exceptionally well written game for the PC and Xbox 360 by BioWare, the people who brought you Baldur's Gate and Knights of the Old Republic (the first one). Mass Effect is an RPG masquerading as a third person shooter, something which becomes patently obvious not far into the game. In it you are able to create your main character (Male) or (Female) Shepherd, and, to an extent, customize their appearance.
Mass Effect utilizes a Paragon/Renegade system similar to (and, in my opinion, much less obnoxious than) the KotoR light/dark system; and dialogue is innovative in that you are given a great deal more customization in what you want to say. Every choice you make in the dialogue tree can have different results on the assignments and missions (quests) you're working on.
I, myself, am on my second-and-a-half play through with my original character. Between the two of us, my male associate and I have unlocked pretty much all the achievements except for the "Have this person in your party" achievements, since that requires a tedious amount of play through - doing pretty much every single Assignment over again. Regardless, Mass Effect has enough replayability for me to want to pick it up and continue playing for the third time, so, they must've done something right!
So, let's use this thread to talk about Mass Effect: the gameplay, the story, the achievements, speculation about future games in the trilogy, the hilariously unfounded controversy associated with it - whatever!

naked 3D pixel butt ftw lol
but seriously, i'm currently on my second playthrough. trying as a renegade vanguard to get the achievement for renegade points and biotic ability uses. My first shepherd was a female paragon.
after this run through, i'm going to attempt hardcore mode with my lvl 50 shepherd to get to level 60, then i'll try insanity with her.
I don't even want to consider how many playthroughs it's going to take to get all of the companion achievements O_O

Oh man, yeah, and getting Liara's achievement is tricky, since she's not in the party for as many missions as the others. But holy crap it's so fun. XD

I'm working on getting either Wrex or Tali for this run through. Though seeing as i'm being renegade, i'm not sure how the little.... confrontation... with Wrex will go. so i'll have to see.
I romanced Kaidan on my first female run through so i got his achievement. I'm planning on romancing Liara when I go through with her again so hopefully i'll get her achievement then

As long as you go ultra-renegade you should be OK, I believe. I'm not entirely sure. I didn't play through as renegade, my roommate did. XD

I love the graphics and...I just love all the stuff you can do inside the game.

It's very pretty. Some of the uncharted worlds are just awesome.

Sometimes I think that using the same couple of layouts for all the interiors on the quests on uncharted worlds was a bit lazy. But then I remember that time saved doing that was probably spent elsewhere on a part of the game that I really enjoyed.

Yeah at first I was kind of irritated by how every single inside "dungeon" type of assignment had the exact same rooms, and how a lot of the planets just looked like a Bryce 3D bump map with "sand" texture applied  but I agree, you can see that the time was well spent elsewhere. Although, yeah, I dread redoing most of the assignments as it can get very monotonous.

Though on the plus side, you get quite quick and good at running through the "dungeons"; you know where the next corner will be lol

That's very true. XD At this point I could probably run through and beat the game in less than half a day, if I skipped most of the assignments... I need a new game. XD;

Heya! I'm very interested in purchasing a new PC game and Mass Effect was one of my options... With that in mind, I have a few questions... hope you guys don't mind answering.
First off.. is it worth it? (it's subjective, I know.. but I'd still like to hear from you). Secondly... is it an offline game or is it more of an MMORPG?
And lastly... Can you compare it to other PC games? (as an overall)

I've never played Mass Effect on PC. It is an amazing game on the xBox 360, but the controls could be vastly different on the PC. Regardless of the platform, Mass Effect is a wholly offline experience.
While I really loved Mass Effect, I feel that buying something like The Orange Box or The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion for the PC would give you more bang for your buck:
The Orange Box presents you with the Half Life 2 series thus far, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 (best multiplayer shooter out right now, in my opinion) all for the price of one PC game, and all titles enclosed in the box are AWESOME.
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is a first person RPG with hundreds of built in quests and a sandbox enviornment that allows players to make their own graphics/quests/whatever, so even after you've beaten the main storyline, there are thousands of other things to do with official DLC and user made DLC.
In sum, Mass Effect is DEFINITELY worth getting on the console, but I think you have some better options on the PC.

hmmm
it depends.
i too only have it for the console, but they've improved a lot of the problems for the PC version. They've also included the add on pack "Bring Down The Sky" free with the PC version. 360 users have to buy it from the marketplace.
i don't think you can compare mass effect to the likes of half life 2 etc.
one's a over-shoulder shooter, one's a FPS.
i know given the choice i'd get mass effect, but that's because FPS games give me really bad motion sickness.
dichromaticbeagle: If you like RPGs, particularly Bioware ones, then i'd get Mass Effect. If you're looking for a shooter, then perhaps something else is your best shot. The combat in ME isn't awful, it's just more focused on story than anything else :)
I don't know what other PC games it could be compared to. Maybe KOTOR meets Gears of War.

It really does depend on the genre you're looking for. Like I said in the OP, Mass Effect is an RPG masquerading as a 3rd person shooter. If you're into either of those genres, it's a great game on the console.

I had purchased Mass Effect for the Xbox 360 when it came out because I had friends that swore by it. I had enjoyed games similar to it, like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but for some reason I just couldn't get into Mass Effect. I wasn't exactly sure of what I was doing sometimes and I dunno. Just didn't enjoy it. I probably would have gotten more into it if I had played it for a bit longer, but I never gave it the chance. Other games came out and it got pushed aside.

My boyfriend and I played this game so much! I had no idea that it was made by KOTOR's company (the name escapes me) until I read it one day. We immediately ran out and bought it. Yeah, much much love for Mass effect!!

The company is Bioware :)
They also did the Baldur's Gate series and the first Neverwinter Nights.

BioWare has a great RPG track record, that's for sure. They're working on a "spiritual sequal" to the Baldur's Gate series that I am ridiculously excited about. XD

I cannot wait for Dragon Age!
I just hope that my laptop can run it and they don't have that stupid "3 activations only" bollocks that EA seems to like so much.

I think Mass Effect did have some securom BS on it, but the program's been met with such intense hostility after Spore that I wonder if maybe Bioshock will lessen their coverage.
It's funny how companies like Valve have very little problem with pirating because they DON'T use crap like that and they give out updates and DLC for free. 8D; Maybe other companies would be wise to pursue this business plan, rather than trying to shake money out of consumers' already empty pockets at every available opportunity.
