I know there's a few moderators that do their job and do it well. But when it comes to moderators (on any site) this is what you have to expect:

1. People want a position of power so they can brag and feel awesome. They want the benefits of it, without realizing how much work goes into it. On smaller sites, the upper staff can usually pinpoint these people. But on a site with a hundred or so moderators and a few people on top to watch them, it's hard to catch these behaviors. So they can go unnoticed until someone reports an issue with them. Sometimes these reports can go unnoticed.

2. Moderators are people too. On a site like Mene, it's easy to take care of your job, weed through the threads in your forums and do your job. On Gaia, sometimes 10 moderators to a forum is a difficult and trying task. The ones that are dedicated may often feel frustrated, since once they finish a load of moved threads and warnings another load the same size crops up an hour later. Gaia is one site I would NEVER want to moderate for this purpose, but I have the utmost respect for people who take on the job and actual do theirs for the right reasons.

To be honest, the "No telling people about a wrong forum" seems like a good rule for a smaller forum such as this one. But on Gaia, there's not much harm in having someone kindly point it out to them. Most of the time, people will realize that and start a thread in the appropriate place. Once in awhile you get the idiots who get all angry because you pointed this out to them. But usually people are pretty nice about it. I think as long as you kindly suggest it, there's no harm in it. When you get rude about it, then yes... I think a warning should be given. -_- If the threads aren't being dealt with by the moderators, I think it should be the job of the well-meaning and dedicated members to do what they can to help clean the place up a little.

I think it's great about how Solia lets a member lock their own topic when they're finished with it, or have made a placement mistake.

However, Gaia, I'm with everyone's distaste about the moderators.
It's contrary, really, about picking through and sorting users to find new moderators and create a bigger staff. It's almost always about having that power and prestige over others, and as of late, I haven't noticed any good come of it.

It's a job, and whether or not they "signed up for it", it's still something they're required and obligated to complete until they quit or are terminated. The excuse that moderators are people and have a real life on Gaia is a joke; there aren't even enough fingers in my family to count the number of times I witnessed abuse by moderators, or the utmost outrageous and moronic behavior. I've even got screenshots and saved PMs from "debates" with moderators about their own ToS. Maybe instead of lallygagging around and playing favourites, they could actually do their job. Maybe add a little common sense to their dictations.

On any other forum, which is indeed smaller, I've never had trouble with moderators. In fact, I'm quite fond of them. They take the time for one-on-one to help with a problem, and I've always found their judgment fair.
Not with Gaia; it has been one disappointment after another. Especially with the staff.

Gaia was great years ago and still is but it is now obsessed with earning money. There are like so many sponsors on gaia now, I mean that's not a problem but I think it was much better in 2005 when it was kinda just really simple. Anyways I was on tektek and saw an ad for this site and decided to join. I think it's pretty good so far. I think it's kinda like Roliana

I just took a look at the moderator list for Gaia's Questions and Assistance forum.

There are over 30 moderators for the site on the list (for just 1 forum...). Sounds like a decent number for a site so big, right? Only 5 are online. Anf half haven't been online for months....

As of this second there are 6 for Gaming discussion, none on. Over 30 for the GD, 2 of them on. Over 30 for anime and manga, 5 on. 14 for Art, 4 on. Over 20 for the role playing area, 7 on. Over 20 for Entertainment, 4 on. 11 for the Writers Forum, 1 on.

So out of over 100 moderators for the site... only 28 are online as of this moment. And half of the ones offline have not been on in months.

You guys have to realize that every site has to make money somehow! Gaia is losing money. Infact, they are in debt! Hundereds of thousands of players would be so upset it Gaia wasn't Gaia anymore; if they had to stop because they couldn't afford to own the website. They have to make money somehow. And it's not like they MAKE you pay. You don't have to pay for everything! If you want an MC, you don't need to use your own money! Go play games, earn up the gold, make a quest forum, whatever, and buy it from the MP!

They are not being "money hungry!" They are just trying to stay alive for the pure joy and entertainment of the Gaia users. They don't force you to buy anything!

(If you haven't noticed, I am a member of the GCD. :sarcasm: )

If you ask me, this site almost seems like a cheap replica of Gaia. Not saying I don't like it. It's just my first impression. Many of the features are very, very similar to Gaia's features. They even call them "Monthly Collectables!"

Actually, our monthly items are called Contribution Items. :D

I think you'll find that most avatar sites have a similar layout to Gaia, with some similar features. That's just the nature of the beast, you know?

Hey Squal, just a reminder for you:

Double posting is not allowed on Mene, unless at least 5 hours have passed since your last post OR if the thread has fallen off the front page of the forum. We ask that you please edit your previous post if you want to add to it instead of posting again. :D Please be sure to read through the Posting Rules before posting again.

I'm going to merge your double post into one. :D Just let me know if you have any more questions.

Ooh, don't get me started about Gaia! I've been a member for six years, and they have been, as of late, very disappointing. The original creators/site mods never log on anymore, corporate sponsorship is creating new items, and it's slowly but surely turning into a 'free to join, pay to play' site. I fear the days where Gaia was sweet, young, and full of 13+ humor are dying swiftly. So, I am constantly on the look out for good message forum + customizable avatar sites... like this one! Maybe Menewsha doesn't have all the bells and whistles Gaia does... but sometimes, simplicity is best...
Oh, by the way, if anyone is interested, my Gaia username is the same as my username here. That, and I was thrilled to see my hexidecimal color codes work here!

AH, that might be because of the rapid influx in the amount of users joining from the add on Tektek, which, as you may know, is used by quite a few Gaia users.

I think most of us have been or are Gaia users. It was one of the first popular avatar dress-up forum sites on the web, so it makes sense that people talk about Gaia and compare it to Mene. And yes, the tektek ad has brought in a lot of Gaian users, so you'll probably be seeing Gaia-related threads around quite a bit. If you see one, feel free to tell them to come to this thread, as this is where the Gaia-related discussion should go.

I do say, though. It was tastefully done.

Yes Angel, we used a different tactic this time. We learned a lot from the last tektek ad... It wasn't so... unoffensive.

And thank you Kites. It's appreciated. Also encourage all newbies to read the rules too. Any help we can get helping new users get acquainted with the site is helpful. :D
