Every game has them, even if they are very poorly done at times xD;
Some people enjoy just skipping through the main storyline and thats all, some people like to do other things on the side to give them a break from storyline, and others like to do them both.

I'm a completionist/perfectionist - I cannot finish a game until I have completed every single quest and collected every single item, moral choice games are my enermy because they make me play the game serveral times to have done everything (the witcher is probably my biggest enermy xD too many choices!)

My boyfriend on the otherhand hates sidequests, and only ever does them when they contribute to the continuation of the storyline, he sees them as a waste of time and usually very tedious or boring.

People who consider themselves 'real' hardcore gamers think sidequests are added in for casual or non-gamers to enjoy games xP Not a fan of gamers who are up themselves like that lol

So what do you guys prefer? Blasting through the storyline only, or doing everything slowly.
What games have you come across that have had such a drab and almost pointless storyline? or such terrible minigames they put you to sleep xD

Discuss with me :P where do you fit?

Lol, Halo jab!

I love side quests and other stuff because... well I think they are fun! Most of the games I have don't have too many because I play games for the story and not the game play or bonus stuffs. Like Rule of Rose, it has no real side quests, no competions, not really anything. If you beat the game and do one or two things you get an extra costume for a bonus play through... but that is it. The game play also sucks. But I love the story.

A complete opposite for me is Final Fantasy... anything. I MUST complete everything in those dran games, no matter how hard. I still have a FF 7 save with over 50 or 60 hours put into it because grinding for levels to do the side quests...

It depends on the mood the game sets for me. Usually Ill go through it once just story mode and then when I pick it up again I get the the grind and do all the side quests gathering hardcore leveling ect ect. I've played games where its mainly side quests IE Monster Hunter. Im a avid fan of the choose your own road kinda games :3 those are always the best especially the Elderscrolls games god do I love those. Fabel too not the second one that was terrible I hated the ending -,-;; and the minigames on that bored me. So I guess for the way I am I go straight through the story line first. Its more fun that way leaves me a replay value to it :D

yet to get FF7 :ninja:

edit;
HAH xD everyone i talk to about fable 2 said it was terrible compared to the first, and too easy...but fable 1 isn't that crash hot either >.>; too quick to finish for my liking

This depends on the game for me. If the game isn't very good, I'm not going to do much other than complete the main portion of it. If the game is one of my absolute favorites, I'll play it again and again, making sure to get everything. :)

Of course, there are limits. I really liked Disgaea, but I wasn't going to sit around defeating some of the ridiculous bad guys, even if I really wanted them. For instance, I wanted to get a secret character (Priere from La Pucelle), but I didn't want to waste my time leveling my team up to 2k+. :sweat:

@ rikuee - lol i wouldn't be supprised then if me and my boyfriend finished the game in a day xD;
The hype leading up to it made it look excellent, but it really didn't end up filling people's expectations which is a real shame :(

@ siri - lol wheres your dedication? xD
jokes ;D although im crazy like that myself and would gladly spend the time doing it...

@Tre Le Coco: I know. I fail. ;___;

I got my Disgaea team to level 500 (or something around there) because it was fun. After that, leveling up started to feel like a chore and I didn't want to bother anymore. Don't get me wrong--I'm definitely one of those people who will waste hours playing games, but only if I'm having fun. I don't understand how people can grind away for hours, hating it the entire time, just to get a rare item or special character at the end. : /

And just because I'm curious, what games do you guys think have the most ridiculous side-quests ever? For me, I think a lot of Nippon-Ichi games (like La Pucelle and Disgaea) are pretty ridiculous since you can get your entire party to level 9999, but you only have to be level 70-80 to beat the game. xD;;

There's also the Suikoden series--well, just the first three games. You actually have sidequests in the third game that are dependent on loading a perfect save file from the first game to the second, and then again from the second to the third. Lol, I actually did this one though, because those games are awesome. :cool:

I think sidequest are added in to make the game more enjoyable. To me "hardcore" gamers are the ones who would do all the sidequests and who want to enjoy the game to the fullest. Some side quest are there just for fun, while others are there to add more to the story.

I usually don't play a game more then once, I have too many other games to play, but I might play Mass Effect again for several reasons, including achivements. I'm not an achievement whore but I don't mind getting them. :P I also want to do all the side quest on that game. In some games I enjoy the side quest more then the actual story, like FF9. :sweat: It's not my favorite FF game.

I don't bother getting all the items in a game, like all the weapons. I also don't bother leveling up on purpose unless I need it be a higher level to beat a boss or monsters. I only bothered maxing out some of my characters on FF8.

I liked Halo but that's probably because I played co-op with my boyfriend. The story wasn't spectacular but it was still enjoyable.

Generally, I do try for 100% completion in a game. However, if the game itself is boring, I won't bother with them. And since I'm just trying to hurry along and beat games right now, I'm more interested in speed vs. completion.

But really, I love doing the sidequests and finding out more about the characters and the history of the world that they live in.

It depends if I like the game or not, like gameplay mechanics. But sometimes if I love the story I'll just ram right through it and completly forget about sidequests. I did that with Mass Effect, and since I borrowed it I can't go back and start over.

If I know there are many sidequests I can't help but do them, especially if I get an awesome weapon/item.
I love character specific ones where you learn backstory.
