I try to do that as well, since I rarely come up with the money to buy my own games.
It's GamesRadar's reviews that I rely on, and GameInformer if I got the most recent one.
I remember how hard it was trying to decide whether to buy Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed. I think I mulled it over for like 3 days. XD
I got Assassin's Creed. Glad I did, too. I'm actually not much for the genre of Mass Effect, but the dialogue trees look really compelling.

Mass Effect is an awesome RPG, honestly. Loads more fun than Assassin's Creed, at least in my opinion. Especially now since the Platinum edition, which comes with Bring Down The Sky DLC for free, is only $20.

Maximo, Catwoman, Harry Potter (the first one), the list goes on and on.

This thread reminded me of this one Lord of the Rings game (not based off the movies) my mom bought me when we were at Fry's a long time ago. That game was so frustrating just thinking about brings back bad memories. XD;

I know it's great and all, I'm just not interested in the combat system, plus, it's a pretty long game and I still have other games to finish.
I'll get it eventually, but it's not on the top of my list.
Assassin's Creed had its flaws, but I enjoyed the style of it more.

Sho-Shonojo 09-04-2009 11:24 PM

Novariko, you played it too then??

Aw, really?
I loved Dirge of Cerberus.
Although I can honestly say I got it solely because Vincent was the main character.

I can see why alot of people didn't like it though. Final Fantasy, especially it being an RPG series + Shooters don't mix too well. And the controls... they took a while to get use to. It was all very overwhelming when I first played.

Personally? Nope. I try to always pre-view my games before I buy. It's happened to my friends and my brother many times before. I learned my lesson through them. xD I did however buy a preview for the SIMS 3 for a $1 at Target. That was a complete waste of my time. I thought that it would let you fiddle around with building a SIM because in the trailers and pre-release stuff I hated the way the SIMS looked in 3 and wanted to see if I could change it or make them more appealing to me.

Looks like I'll just have to see what my cousin's game looks like.

I know exactly what you mean. I think the last time i did that was with Xenosaga. I had played Xeno gears.... Awesome game! I played Xenosaga Episode 1... Agian awesome! So i figured episode 2 sweet!!! But no. Instead i get a horrible failure with an almost completely (& horribley i might add) reworked ability system that is comepletely eliminates the luster of it's predecesors.

I believe the name of the game Sho-Shonojo was talking about was the first Soul Reaver. It was the second game released in the legacy of kain series. The games are pretty well known for the stumping puzzle aspects. & that first hump is a pretty tricky one. However if you can get past that i'd say the games are pretty good. Especially the later ones.

Sho-Shonojo 09-08-2009 10:15 PM

Actually Izzeyl, I've never played that game. I posted later to say that I had figured out the game was was Unlimited SaGa.

Overton Transpire 09-09-2009 10:34 PM

I remember having this experience with Soul Calibur IV. It's not that SCIV is a bad game considered on its own... but I had been playing Guilty Gear XX Reload previously, which made the slowness and less-than-polished character balancing of SCIV feel like the gameplay equivalent of sandpaper on the tender bits.

Before that, back when SNES was still around... no, I do not WANT to remember that particular mistake.

Oh ok. My mistake. But i don't remember being able to walk around when you are dead in unlimited saga. Maybe i just didn't get far enough before i trashed it. In Soul Reaver you actually can still act after you die. It's kind of interesting the way they do it.

Jane Lucien 09-10-2009 01:18 PM

It only happened to me once with Mushashi: Samuarai Legend for Playstation 2. I bought it because the cover didn't look too bad and I liked the style and the other parts that were described. Then I got home, played it for like an half hour and grew bored.I couldn't believe I had wasted 50€ :o I didn't learn from it though so I still buy games without doing research but so far every single of them turned out to be good.

Well when I looked it up it said something about having both health points and another kind of points. I figured health points and figured when they were gone that meant I was dead. Apparently it was the other points that killed me if they were gone.

Ya the really bad part that made me give up on it was the fact that there was only 1 OPTIONAL quest that alowed you to get a maximum of 10 herbs to fix the LP problem. & on top of that the max LP never increased.

Larele 09-13-2009 08:09 PM

..just once. I was given some birthday money and I saw Tales of Phantasia. ..and I bought it because of the horse on the cover. >>; Well..it took me two years to pick it back up, after getting stuck..so I spent a week or so on it wondering around, before restarting the game, and remembering what I missed.

Chocolahime 09-21-2009 11:17 AM

I've had quite a few of those but one in paticular didn't have any reason to do with the story.
I brought home Silent Hill: Homecoming and I was so excited to play it because I really like silent hill, unfortunetly I forgot how scarred I get durring the game and now that I am living alone I had no one to watch me play... yes thats how I finished all the other silent hills... with someone else there... with the light on. Needless to say I traded it for another game.

Resident Evil 5...

For those of you who don't know:
You can't move and shoot at the same time.
The enemies take 50 shotgun blasts to kill.
And that graphics are real in an unreal way.

Cap'n Kidd 09-22-2009 02:27 AM

I bought Viva Pinata a while back, hearing it was so adorable and so much fun and addicting and and...
But I got bored of it so easily. It's definitely cute, but it's like.. ugh...

I got the Darkness as well. It looks amazing, and it is amazing, but I HATEHATEHATE the controls!

[Chip] 09-22-2009 06:16 PM

Oh my goodness, yes! I can't even remember what it was called. Lol. It was a fairly new game a few months back and my dad and I were really excited for it. Come to find out, the game was so bugged out that our mounts could be killed and had to be rebought for well over 100,000 Gold. You couldn't go into certain places and could get stuck if you got close to the entrances, and there was never a lack for glitchy or repeated quests. Much sadness!

shandi b 10-23-2009 07:00 PM

ya that happened to me when i bought some shooter game.....it was so bad i don't remember the name but its really old so most people probably don't know it any ways.

Telendil Thaliel'dhar 10-24-2009 03:38 AM

My main issue with games I was disappointed in was that I couldn't play them. For instance, I bought The Witcher, but I couldn't install it. I compared my computer's stats with the system requirements, and it should have worked, but it didn't.

Another one disappointed me before I ever bought it was Final Fantasy XI. Now, I really enjoy the series and have almost every one for the PS and PSII. But I won't get that one because there's no offline version like you'd have on Neverwinter Nights 2. It's online or nothing, and when you have dial-up, that doesn't work.

Aiming for the head = 1 shot-kill.

Mario's Missing.... little did i know that Mario had educational games for the snes >_<

Sanny 11-03-2009 03:33 AM

Hmm....For my PSP, it would have to be...Class of Heroes. Though I still own it. Cause I spent about ...$30+ on it...The game looked pretty cool from the pictures I had seen. Character customization had me intruiged, etc. THen I boughti t, and played it...And thought, 'I've done it again...Bad game choice..A little more research next time.'
For DS....No bad choices...Cause all I own for it is Pokemon Pearl, and some Final Fantasy games.
My Xbox 360, would have to be Infinite Undiscovery....Was pretty cool playing it at first... Then it got to the point of repetition.Where I got my grandparents to spend....over $50 on it at the time....And got barely anything for it.
WAIT...Lied about the DS games...Cooking Mama 2 had to be the worst .xD

I never really bought a game that I didn't like, but I got some bad ones as gifts for Christmas or my birthday. And for those of you who didn't like Suikoden IV... I disagree with you. I liked it. But maybe I'm just biased, because it is my favorite series. I didn't like the 4 character party but I can deal with that. But Ted is in it. That's a plus for me.
